Great camera; Poor Mac Support
on August 13, 2012

Great camera and upgrade to my previous 5DMkII as described by so many others. The one negative to be aware of is that Canon's support of this camera and other photographic devices for users of Mac OSX consistently lags several months after general availability of Apple OSX updates, meaning, if you purchase a recently announced Apple Mac or upgrade your Apple operating system, chances are high you will not be able to immediately use supporting Canon software like the EOS Utility to modify and access custom camera capabilities and lens profiles which are part of your camera. This has been the case for at least the last 3 years and OSX releases, unfortunately continuing now with OSX 10.8 support planned for 3 months after general availability. Other than this software support issue which Canon could easily get ahead of like so many other software developers do, I highly recommend the 5D Family!
Pros: good battery life, quiet, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Solid Operation
Cons: limited software support

Best camera ever owned
on March 23, 2013

The 5D Mark III is by far the best camera I ever owned. Build quality is excellent, image quality and color reproduction is true to life. The camera focuses fast and accurately and one of the nicest features that I found is its ability to focus quickly in relatively low light. There were other reasons why I purchased this particular model, such as full frame sensor, dual storage media etc., but once you hold this camera in your hands you will quickly see why you want one for yourself.
Pros: quiet, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Solid Operation
Cons: no pop up flash

An Excellent Camera
on December 19, 2014

To celebrate my 83rd Birthday in January and justify buying a new camera, I gave my Canon 60D to a grandson as a Christmas present. I want to have one excellent camera and carry no more than three lenses. And my solutions were:
1. An all-purpose Image Stabilized lens that can zoom from moderate wide-angle to portrait and beyond, the Canon 24-105 f4 IS lens. (Why does Canon not offer a 24-84 f 2.8 Image Stabilized Lens?)
2. An easy-carry lens, the Canon 40mm 2.8 STM disc lens. It is as small as it is good!
3. A portrait lens.
The Canon 5D Mark III was the obvious choice because it is full-frame camera that has had two significant upgrades. While I am still struggling to learn all of the camera’s many features, I find it a marvelous camera!
I hunt in the A+ (Auto) Mode, and shoot in Manual Mode with Live View. With Live View, I can:
a. Press the Q Button on the back to open the menu, use the multi-controller to move to the bottom center of the /2 image, select Self-timer: 2 Sec, and press the SET Button again to set the timer and review my other tentative settings.
b. Press the Pen-on-a Page (Photo Creative-Photo Compare) Button to open and select the Picture Style selections (Multiple Exposure and HDR Modes are alternatives). Press the SET Button to open the selections, spin the SET Dial to select a Picture Style, and press the SET Button again to confirm the selection.
(As the SET Dial and the SET Button are clearly labeled, I strongly recommend Canon stop calling the back dial the “Quick Control Dial”. This creates confusion with the “Q” Button on the back that opens the very useful Custom Controls menu).
c. Press the Magnify Button twice and center on the spot that requires the most accurate focus. Press the AF Button to autofocus, and manually refine focus as necessary.
d. Press the Magnify Button again to return to full screen, frame the image and press the shutter release to start the 2-second delay. Steady the camera and capture the image.
e. Press the Arrow-Head-in-a-box Button to review the captured image. Press the Magnify Button to enlarge the image, and press the Multi-Control Button to move around in the image. Press the Magnify Button again to return to the image to it’s original size.
f. Take a second photo as a precaution, or shoot a burst of three images from which you can select the image in which the subjects’ eyes are all open

WOW! Beyond my expectations.

I have used this camera since it arrived on March 24th, 2012. I purchased it with the "Kit Lens" which really is an unfair name for the EF 24-105 mm f/4L IS USM Lens.
I have shot over 5000 photos since and recorded about 20 hrs of video. This is the best 'all around multimedia camera' I have ever used, hands down.
Its low level light performance is stunning. This is great for photographers. The so called EF 24-105 mm f/4L IS USM "kit lens" looks plenty fast at f/4 when ISOs up to 12800 produce negligible (yes, negligible) amounts of noise.
The 5D Mark III is an obvious choice for DSLR videographers/enthusiasts. I think this camera will make you happier than any other purchase you could possibly make for the money. Many know that the 5D Mark II was a video workhorse, but on my budget (which is limited) I couldn't justify the jump in price to go from a t2i/t3i (550D/600D) into either the 7D or 5D. Sure, both were better than the t2i/t3i (550D/600D), but not 2 to 4 times better. I can honestly say that the improvement from the 5D mark II to the 5D Mark III makes up for the initial price disparity PLUS the additional mark up in cost. It is PHENOMENAL.
Ergonomics are improved, it feels like you're holding a 7D. It has a sort of addicting grip that makes you want to hold onto it even when you're not shooting.
Mode dial locks, like the 7D.....I'm getting used to it, but the jury is out as to whether this is really that cool of a feature.
Dual SD/CF slots = yay/finally! A note: high end CF cards (900X) handle the buffer from the Digic 5+, FAR BETTER, than my high end (class 10) SD cards. I would say that my (nonscientific) observations credit the CF card with twice the performance speed. So, if you are going to push the 6 fps burst and you are coming into this camera from the t2i/t3i, investing in a quality CF card is a good idea, but not necessary!.
Happy shooting folks, and I hope even happier shooting if you choose to go with the 5D Mark III. In summary, this is the one camera that will do the most for the highest of high-end prosumers. If you're into DSLR video and have the money, stop wondering and buy it. If you like to shoot great photos and video with the same body and don't need the absurdly wonderful 14 fps burst of the EOS-1D x, buy this camera. I'm not a fan of the mantras 'more is more' and 'the newer, the better,' but with the 5D Mark III, more really is more, and this newer camera is better.
Pros: fantastic noise levels at high iso, improved dslr video features, sd/cf dual card slots, ergonomic design, weatherproofed/rugged, 6 fps with digic 5+ processor, 3 custom setting modes, much improved firmware, headphone jack for monitoring audio, price increase is justified!
Cons: the price went up $1000, $1000 more than the competition, expensive (yet high quality) accessories

Best DSLR after 1D series
on April 19, 2012

The 5D MK III is a fantastic camera. If you like taking pictures in low light with no flash, this camera will not disappoint you. The Image Quality is excellent. The Auto Focus is fast and accurate. I took many photos at an evening party with no flash, many at ISOs 6,400, 10,000 and 12,800. The photos were unbelievable. Even at ISO 25,600 the photos are useable with some noise reduction. The video quality is superb. This camera is also easy to use. It has many features which will keep the advanced photographers satisfied for years to come. I am so glad and thankful that Canon did not introduce a higher megapixel camera. The Raw files can be very large in size. Next to 1D series, this is the best DSLR camera in the market. Look no further.
Pros: excellent image quality, high iso performance, fast and accurate auto focus, superb video quality, easy to use, lcd quality, build quality, ergonomics
Cons: none

Simply Amazing

I've owned Canon cameras since the AE-1 days. Most recently I've been a 7D owner for several years. The 7 is an outstanding camera and while I still highly recommend it, I've always wanted a full frame for the simply perfect image quality they seem to produce. I waited with the 5D Mk II came out because I was not thrilled by the AF system. Well the Mk III has almost everything a pro, semi pro, and camera nut could ever want! IQ is amazing, all the options are well thought out and simply to navigate through, like the 7D. I already had a nice lineup of EF lenses, and I must say the perform great now that they're on a full frame. That was another huge decision in making the change. The only thing I would have liked to see Canon do is add a flash commander built in like the 7D, but that's not a deal breaker in any way. I'm hoping to get many years of use out of my new 5D Mk III. Great job Canon!
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, great iso performance

Great camera. Takes very high quality images . I'm very happy with this camera. This is my 3rd Canon after an AE-1 program and an EOS 1 Ds. The menu is very intuitive and very easy to learn to use.
