Need to know why my first time using this grill/smoker and the paint is already coming off and not had it a week

A good buy for the price...

I haven't had a chance to cook with it yet, so this is just an introductory evaluation. That said, it took me about an hour to unbox and assemble the grill. Fairly straight forward instructions with no major issues. You should definitely get another pair of hands to help out when attaching the firebox to the main body of the unit! Once together, the metal seems a bit thin to me, but for the price, I can't complain too loudly. I did notice that the gap between the firebox and the main body is quite big. Same goes for the access door on the firebox. Seems like both could use a gasket to keep the smoke in. As I said above, I've not used it yet, so I don't know if this will be an issue.
One thing that I had a problem with was the protective wrapping on the coal grates (not the cooking grates). I don’t know if it is some sort of industrial preserving lube/oil or what, but I had a heck of a time getting the plastic peeled off of those grates! The gunk is greasy and sticky at the same time. The plastic wrap itself was so flimsy that trying to pull it off just ended up shredding the stuff. VERY annoying and messy! But, with patience and time, it all came off. And if I didn't get it all, whatever is left should burn off when I fire up the grill for its initial “seasoning”.
Overall, I think (and hope) that it’s a good buy. I’ll reserve judgment on that until I’ve actually had smoke/fire in the thing. Weather permitting, I plan on giving the grill its “seasoning” fire this weekend. Then it’s Brisket Time! Wish me luck!!

I bought this I'll a couple years back, and loved it at first, but after using it at few times you realize how much better it could be. It leaks smoke from everywhere, so I bought some padded tape type stuff that was recommended in a forum I read for the main lid that houses the grill part that holds the meat. The grates in the fire box will only last through the first use, so go ahead and purchase some thicker backups immediately so you can use them the second time you want to smoke something. Doing these recommendations will get you through the first season of smoking, but to get through the 2nd season buy a new firebox. I was OK with the paint peeling, but later that lead to the bottom of the firebox to rust out and make the firebox inoperable due to the big hole. It is a shame how downhill the quality went from what was the same model a few years back that had thicker metal to this current thickness. I would only recommend this grill if you want to buy a new one each year.

I bought this smoker a month ago and it let's all the smoke out everywhere. I also wish they had a rotistory turn big enough for this smoker grill

Just brought it home. I'm on here reading reviews. Bought it to replace an old vertical unit. Had it for 5 yrs. Used it quite a bit and it held up rather well. Don't know if we got a deal or not. Reviews are mixed, some very negative and disappointing. Tech said not to use sealant. Don't know if we got the thick or thin one. I plan on wiping interior down well w/peanut oil before assembly and use some thread sealer. Any help would be a plus. Thank you all.

Lots of Smoke alright

I just bought this unit. It created a lot of smoke everywhere except out of the smoke stack, it got so hot that the paint melted off the bottom and fell all over the ground, the grate that was holding the charcoal is not bent from giving way to the heat of the Kingsford Charcoal. Smoke rolled out of every possible part of the unit, the door the underneath, the fire box and eventually the smoke stack. Looking on line I see that most BBQ aficionados modify this unit in one way or another just to get it to do what they actually bought it for, smoke meat. I guess I am off to the hardware store to purchase additional options to modify as well.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I've been using this grill since before Char-Broil bought it from the original company. My wife got it for me after a deployment and I thought it wasn't worth it's weight in salt. Claims of difficulty maintaining temperature are true. The top leaks like a sieve, but I could not find another smoker with the cooking surface that this one had. Since Nov 2006, I replaced the firebox 3 times and the base is finally too thin and rusted through. I ended up buying the same grill because it is light enough to move in my household goods when the Army moves me, and it is versatile once you figure out how to keep the temp up for smoking a lot of meat. I will explore options for sealing the lid and retain heat. Ultimately, it is a cheap alternative to more expensive smokers, but not as heavy as I would like.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Gaps in the fittings, poor paint.

I bought this grill on Saturday for a company bar b que and it got hot enough to with only a small amount of charcoal and two pieces of wood, that it peeled the paint off the smoke box.
I don't understand how some people complain about maintaining heat if you adjust the air flow just right I can keep it in the "ideal" range easily enough.
