This is an extremely low capacity washer - do not purchase if you have a family.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I purchased this washer after reviewing all the comparably priced washers. I felt that it would be the best fit for me being that it offered both the energy savings features and the ability to fill as desired. At no point did I realize that the self fill would only fill this washer to a little below the half full line.
What this means is; to wash bedding for a king sized bed you will need to do two loads or the wash load will have "dry" spots because the machine can not handle a load of that size. What that means is; your laundry is not clean.
I was told this washer was performing as per the specifications of the engineers, but, unfortunately, it is not performing as advertised. This washer is not for families that have laundry needs.

DO NOT BUY THIS WASHER

If you are the type of person to put your clothes in washer, walk away, come back in 1 hour then this is for you. However if you are interested in the outcome of your wash do not consider this purchase. This is the worse washer I have ever used and I am stuck with it now. I prefer my items submerged in water when washing and rinsing, however this washer is intended to use little water as possible. Although I select "Super" it never fills to that level on the first fill. Most other washers have the option to continue to fill NOT this one! Once the load is stopped and restarted it automatically drains all my soapy water (wasted water and detergent) and starts over with a new fill which will then reach the level of super. The wash cycle I can live with although very long timewise. Moving on finally to the rinse cycle; call it anything but rinsed out. Water is sprayed onto items while spinning slowly and never filling the washer. This I really don't like! Since there are no options to work around any of these issues I just start the wash again 2nd time without adding detergent, walk away, then come back in an hour. My biggest regret is I didn't read reviews before this purchase.

what a mistake

Had to buy a washer quickly and did not have opportunity to peruse ratings/reviews beforehand. Looked for one where I could set the water levels myself, and override the ES provisions, thought this one fit, but NO. Water level in no way corresponds to size of tub, so capacity is not what it appears.
Very annoying is the inability to change cycle once machine starts, and why does automatic setting put HOT water in when I have chosen warm? That is what a mixing valve is for. An unhappy consumer for sure.

Horrible Machine! Do NOT buy!

After my old machine died after over 10 years of faithful service, we decided on this washer. Unfortunately, this machine has broken down 11 times since we bought it. It coincidentally happened immediately after the warrantee expired. We bought the extended warrantee on this thing and they have not been able to properly fix it. GE will not replace instead, offering a discount on another machine. We saved months to buy this thing and cannot afford a "discounted" machine. Problems include replacing the harness washer, wiring, shaft and tube ASM, motor and inverter ASM, tightening pulley and replacing the brick that cracked and destroyed the motor. DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE!!!

Good compromise
on May 22, 2012

For those of us who prefer the "real washing machines" of days gone by ( you know , the ones that actually use enough water to clean and agitation enough to clean ?) this is a fairly good compromise. This one has an agitator in the center and does allow you to at least somewhat choose a water level. Still not enough, but if you go to any of the washers that are like the old ones they have no optional features and are cheaply made. This one does not lock you out either.(which is a pain). Cleans pretty well, easy to use, is a good compromise between the "Good Old Washers" and the new hype.So far seems to be well made.

GE washing machine

Water level too low. Can't wash clothes with 11 gals of Water.
Why put a level water gauge on the machine - ll gals is all you get.
Why have a big tub - can't get clothes clean when full with only 11 gals of water.

I switched from my old GE washer...

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] If you ever have the opportunity to get your old washer worked on (ex: replace the motor or the transmission), DO IT. They just dont make 'em like they used to. I wish I had gotten the GE repairman to fix our old washer. The new one is really nice but the clothes dont seem to get as clean, you cant load as many pieces of clothing in the drum, and I always have to keep the 2nd rinse on because the regular rinse cycle is a joke. I just spins as the water runs over the clothes, no agitation or anything. However, the 2nd rinse cycle (that you have to select from one of the dial options) agitates. Overall, its a good washer with good features. I just miss my old one.

POORLY DESIGNED

For an average home use OK. If you have kids, husband or really dirty clothes it sucks MANY BAD FEATURES!!!!!!
1. You have no control of this machine once it starts. If you change anything or any knob you are screwed. The machine will start over, pump all your water, soap and whatever else out, then refil the machine.
2. The agitator on most of the cycles is extremely slow, cool for light soiled, but if dirty they never get clean.
3. Clothes never get moved around in the tub. Of course if you have only a few and lots of water they do, but on normal usage noever happens
4. Hard time getting soap out of clothes on the rinse cycle without additional usage.
5. VERY POOR PROFORMANCE
