Good headphones but hurts to wear

I bought these cause i tried out the v55s and thought these were a better version. These are nice to look at and the sound is nice at resonable volumes but if you crank it up then everyone in the room can hear you and it gets really distorted but then again im not trying to destroy my eardrums anyways so im good. The plastic is creeky and makes alot of sounds as you try to adjust. I have had these phones for about 3 days now and im still trying to get used to the lack of cusioning, the diameter of the cans are really wide and i think sony should have just went with around ear instead of putting this on ear... some of my ear has cusion and some parts feel the hard plastic underneath... they should have put more cusioning. I bought these so i am gonna use them but i would have been happier with the v55s.
What's great about it: Style, Size, Sound
What's not so great: Creeky plastic, Uncomfortable at first,

Great sound. Great quality

All the pros are the same as other reviews. The only con I don't see mentioned is that these get uncomfortably hot and hurt your ears after just 15 or so minutes of usage. So if it is comfort you're looking for, these are not the cans you're looking for.
What's great about it: Sound Quality, Bass, looks
What's not so great: Discomfort after few minutes of usage

Disappointing
on June 9, 2013

Got these to replace a pair of worn out MDR-V500 phones that got a lot of use over nearly a decade. That model's no longer available, so I expected the "replacement" would be at least as good, if not better. Instead of the nicely balanced, true-sounding phones, I got these bass-heavy phones with a short cord. I use them for on-air radio work. They're simply not as good as the phones they "replaced".
What's great about it: Rugged and will handle high volume without distorting
What's not so great: WAY too much bass

Great quality, dissapointing sound.

I purchased the MDR-V55 because it was time to replace my old Sennheiser HD 250's. I was looking for something with power and capability for bass, but also clarity and something that wouldn't drown out the rest of the sound. I figured a trusted brand like Sony would surely be able to live up to that for a set that retails for about $80.
The downside:
As someone who's father has been a professional DJ for over 35 years, I know how to put headphones through their paces. Unfortunately, I have been disappointed with the sound of the MDR-V55's. It seems to be an obvious attempt to recreate Beats headphones. The problem with that is that Beats are designed to be extremely bass heavy without maintaining sound quality. The pure tones of music are drowned out and clarity is lost. This is not to say that bass is not to be exploited, I love a powerful and punchy bass. However, NEVER at the expense of clarity and other frequencies. Sadly, this is exactly what happens with these Sony MDR-V55's. I honestly think I'll switch back to my old (falling apart) Sennheiser HD 250's until I come up with enough money to get something that can preform powerfully and clearly at the same time.
The upside:
The headphones themselves are very nice, they feel well built and the cord is a flat, tangle-free style. The cord is a bit short, but could be easily remedied with an extender. The kind of music I've found works fairly well with these are most any dubstep. -Those drops- O_o

Its sad to hear that the headset was not up to par with what you have in mind. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention and would be more than happy to forward your information to the proper department. This is definitely helpful input to us that will contribute greatly to improvement in future products. Thank you.

Somewhat Disappointed
on July 30, 2014

This was my 1st "true" headphone purchase in many years. For my listening preference, these are too bass heavy for my liking and I wish that there was more treble and detail. But, more disappointing than the sound reproduced, is the noticible creeking from the plastic construction of the headphone. Every little turn of the head or neck, facial expression etc. causes an annoying audible creeking of the parts. If the return period had not expired, I would have returned and looked at other options.

Overall good quality, but too much bass
on October 5, 2014

I've only had these for a few days, so I can't say whether they will stand up to the test of time, but they are of good build quality. The sound is good and generally pretty clear, but the bass tends to drown out the sounds in certain songs and listening to non-music content (podcasts, etc.). Dubstep in particular sounds really good on these headphones. Cord is nice because it's flat, but I could have used a couple more feet of length. If this pair had included a bass boost toggle and 2 ft of more cord length, they would be perfect, 5/5 no problem.

ok.. but not DJ worthy

- the lack of coiled cable is a major pitfall on these.
- beware, no 1/4" adapter is included
- overall, the sound is not full or bassy. sub bass is often less distinguishable than what is necessary.
- headphones pads covers are very thin..
