Won't charge, won't play music, nothing

My daughter got this for me in August. Totally packed it in last night. It will not charge. It will connect via Bluetooth if it's plugged in, but won't play anything. Just get one static sound and nothing else. I will be contacting JBL tomorrow, but I'm afraid that with no receipt, I may have the same difficulties as others in the comments have experienced.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I bought the JBL Flip 2, this week. My younger brother brought his to our family Christmas gathering. We listened to music, podcasts, and youtube videos. I was impressed with the sound quality of this compact wireless speaker. So, I did some research, read reviews and, settled on the Flip 2 ...very pleased with my purchase.

Everything I ever wanted in a speaker

I am blow away with this speaker! I bought it on boxing day after having my eye on it for a while, reading reviews and comparing. I heard that the bass was equal to the monster pill and I can say... it's pretty darn close! The bass is perfect for this speaker and it goes so loud while still being able to hear the song. I am very pleased, amazing product. Also, the white is so stylish and sleek, love it!

I purchased the flip 2 for a friend, I own the the flip it works fine and friend is satisfied however I did notice that original speaker connects with device and stays connected at greater distances . This new flip gets choppy when separated about ten feet from device.

So far a small dust collector

If this were bigger it could be a boat anchor. At this size it is likely to be just a dust collector.
I purchased this unit along with a Bluetooth enabled receiver. I did not realise that behind the Bluetooth icon which is marketed as a standard, there are in fact many modulations and no device covers them all.
The receiver uses AD2P. The Flip 2 does not use this modulation. Only now do I find out. Modulation information is not easily seen in the product descriptions on many sites.
I thought I would use this with my HP Windows 8 computer. It did initially pair-up and work. However, once I turn off the Flip 2, it will not connect unless I remove the device and re-add the device. Again only works until the Flip 2 is turned off.
Too frustrating. Windows 8 drivers say everything working. The pop up shows the Flip 2 being turned on but the Playback Devices window shows the "Speakers" of the Flip 2 as Disconnected and no matter how I try I cannot get the "Connect" to work. Even tried forcing the Flip 2 to try and re-pair.
Even more frustrating is that the Flip 2 Hands-Free headset does eventually re-connect. However, I have no desire to use this speaker wired to a headset, what is the point.
Likely JBL will say it is Bluetooth or Microsoft as the root cause. I sadly feel "piggy in the middle" and not happy I have an expensive dust collector.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

After searching for a lower priced speaker with good sound quality I came across the Flip 2. This little speaker packs a big punch. Awesome sound and affordable.
