I always buy genuine HP ink. Recently I put in new yellow and red. Next it wanted a black. Immediately after I inserted the black, it said the yellow was defective and needed to be replaced. So I had to replace an almost new cartridge.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I am sorry to hear that you didn't have a good experience with the cartridges. I can understand why you are disappointed!
It is very possible that the yellow cartridge got its contacts smudged or dirty during the installation processes. You can remove it and carefully clean the copper contacts on the cartridge and the matching ones inside the printer. Use lint-free material and make sure all the cartridges are firmly seated in their slots when it is returned to its place.
If that does not help, I'd advise you to return the yellow for replacement. The return and exchange process is covered, step-by-step, at:

I get your feelings about having to buy color cartridges to print. It may seem pointless. Our system is intentionally designed to allow for a full printing experience. Sometimes, even text documents require some color ink on them.
There is a simple solution to this problem. Use the black ink only setting in your printer. If you never use the color ink, then the color cartridges will rarely need replacements.

Just a printer cartridge but the printer was not working with a cartridge I thought was good. I replaced it with this original cartridge and printer is working again. The ordering, shipping, and pricing of cartridges makes it much easier than trying to find one in local stores.

Shipping was great. Installation a breeze, as always. New yellow cartridge miraculously made my printer work again. I haven't printed anything yellow so far. I can't judge whether cartridge has extended life (i assume XL stands for eXtended Life) or not at this point. I hope so. Too bad printer software doesn't track number of sheets printed with each cartridge, so one could judge the lifespan.
