best walk around lens.

I have owned this lens since 2013 and use it often as my light walk around lens on my APS-C or Full Frame Mark IV
great sharpness center to edges, some vignette at 2.8, but can correct in photo editing. Little distortion and absolutely no flare (no need for a lens hood) wonderful sunstars and a very good to best portrait lens from my full frame to APS-C M6 with canon adapter. This might be better focal length all around than the 50 mm F1.8 that is better for lower light photo and video. Close focuses to 13 inches. Bohka is very good. 50mm 1.8 newer lens has better Bohka and great for portraits.

Great walk around lens

I use this as my general walk around, all purpose lens. It has perfectly fine optics and makes the camera very portable. With this lens, I am inclined to take my camera with me everywhere. For that reason alone it’s worth 5 stars to me.

This has come to be one of my favorite lenses. This is the second time I’ve purchased it after selling the first copy years ago. The slight vignette it gives my images is something that I really enjoy. It’s super sharp and makes my camera so lightweight and easy going. For the price, it’s stellar, and even without considering the price it’s a worthy companion for my camera.

Sharp, light and compact ....

On my Canon SL1, the whole thing is almost small as a mirrorless.
Take sharp pictures and focuses accurately. Good color rendition.
All in all a great lens.

Nice little lens! Does the work of a normal perspective lens - Beautiful, distortion free images! Since it's so light and tiny, it's great on full frame and crop sensor digital cameras, and it even works as a natural compliment to smaller, lightweight film cameras like my 35mm EOS Rebel Ti from 2003. If I had one thing I had to nitpick about, it would be that the focus is entirely motor-driven. You can't adjust the focus on this thing without the AF "on" at the time, like when tapping the shutter for AF. That said, it works very well!

This lens has a small profile, and works remarkably well. The focus is great and the lens itself is well-built.

Not One Thing Wrong With It

The Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens is fantastic!
I appreciate the low profile, and the high build quality. The STM autofocusing is good, being rather quiet, but searches a little bit more than my newer nano USM lenses. I have found that this lens is good for shooting video from a tripod, but tends to lack a little bit when shooting handheld. Partially due to the lack of Image Stabilization, but mostly just because the focal length isn't the greatest for keeping waverless video.
Being one that does photography purely as a poorly-funded hobbyist, I see tremendous value in how fast this lens is, along with the high image quality, especially for the price. Being a EF lens (which it's little sister the 24mm 2.8 STM pancake is not) also adds value, but since I shoot with only crop sensor bodies, that fact isn't as compelling.
There's really only one reason that I knock it back to 4 out of 5 stars, and that is because it is not as valuable of a lens for me as my 50mm 1.8 STM nifty fifty.
The focal lengths are so similar. Both being STM (while not silent) are good enough for video especially if using shotgun or lavalier mics. The lower profile of the 40 is helpful, but not incredibly more desirable than the size of the 50mm. The biggest difference is the extra 2 stops of light that the nifty fifty offers. It costing roughly 70% less than the 40mm is a bonus. I've found that the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM spends most of its time on the kids' Rebel T3 as they begin to learn photography.
My take: Unless you are buying this pancake lens for the pancake aspect of it, get the latest nifty fifty from Canon instead.
