Won't clean dark parts of area rugs

First day out of the box and the roomba won't clean the dark brown parts of our area rugs. We also have very dark brown wood floors, which it handled without problem, and it would climb onto our rugs easily, but then stop or get stuck when encountering a dark brown patch. Our rugs are modern, geometric shapes will different shades of brown, but with 2 kids and 2 cats, it is essential that they be cleaned and the roomba just won't do it. Extremely disappointing. This is our main floor, and there are no stairs, so... WHY IS THERE NO WAY TO TURN OFF THE CLIFF SENSOR?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? And yeah, we've read the ways to "hack" the sensor, but those techniques are hit or miss and you risk damaging the unit, so why bother? It shouldn't even be an issue. So many other reviewers have had this problem, you would think iRobot would get a clue. Very sad.
Cons: Cliff sensor can't be turned off, Won't clean dark parts of area rugs

Not good for dog hair on carpets
on May 30, 2015

I love the concept of the robotic vacuum, but it was not effective picking up dog hair from the carpet; even after multiple tries. I had to follow-up and remove hair after the vacuuming was complete. It was like this from the start and I did keep the bin and brushes clean. It had no problem cleaning the floors. I am going to try the 880 vacumm to see if it can adequately clean my carpets.
Pros: Hassle Free Operation
Cons: Misses Spots

Cleans good but no navigation feature
on January 10, 2014

I bought this unit expecting it to clean room by room since it is a ROOMba. I thought all the robots come with that feature. This robot just wanders aimlessly though out my house with no way to steer it back home to it's base to charge. If you only have a studio or you just want to keep one room clean than this is perfect, except for the price. My old 500 series was cheaper and came with room to room navigation. Please make it a standard feature.
Pros: Easy To Empty, Easy To Use
Cons: No Navigation, Noisy, Poor Design, Price
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

With stained concrete floors, living on farm and the owner of a 65 lb shedding rescue dog, this product is amazing! I tell everyone I know about how great it works. Received as a gift. I really could not believe how well it picks up dirt. When I empty tray it is usually half full of soft dirt as well as dog hair. I truly am in love with my robot.
Pros: Amazing!, Easy To Install, Easy To Use, Extends Functionality, Increases Performance

Great Investment and Time Saver

My son bought me Dirk 3 years ago as a Christmas gift. I have a first floor which is a small kitchen/Living room/dining room and sunroom. This unit keeps the entire floor shining. I have both a cat and dog that sheds. I have programmed it to run every morning. It goes off like clockwork and redocks and recharges. I never take my regular vacuum out except for occasional baseboard heater and corner dusting. I have spent thousands on every kind of vacuum cleaner and never thought this unit little unit would ever last or clean effectively. I was wrong. I've had to buy replacement parts but the parts cost has been much less then the multitude of vacuums I have bought. This unit saves me so much time and work and my floors always look beautiful. My hardwood floors (high gloss finish) , I would swear the rubber beater polishes it or something, I haven't washed them in years and you would never know. On weekends I bring Dirk upstairs to clean the bedroom floors and everything sparkles including under the bed. I do pick up rugs with fringes on the edges are Dirk will shred these off. I also try to keep wires lifted off the floor when he runs as he does sometimes gets tangled if there is slack in the wires. One other con is the noise can be a bit annoying when he runs over an hour and a half, but really, it is worth it.
Pros: Cleans Effectively, Cleans Under Furniture, Easy To Use, Hassle Free Operation, Large Debris Bin, Long Run Time
Cons: Noisy

Had it run every day when I first got it. Wife and I hate vacuuming and then twice a week after the first week. Now it just maintains the house and it's super helpful. We have a raised couch and it surprisingly won't fit under it which was disappointing. Make sure you keep track of the comb they give you for the bottom. You'll need it the first few runs. Quality of the rubber brush for ours wasn't the best but who knows maybe it was stuck on something while we weren't home.
Pros: Cleans Effectively, Easy To Use
Cons: Bigger than it looks, Cord detection not great

I purchased my very first Roomba robot as a birthday present to myself. I have about 1000 sq feet of hardwood floor on the first floor of my home. I also have 2 pure bred Golden Retrievers (aka major pet hair droppings). I actually own a Dyson Pet Vacuum (have for years) but lately it's just too much work lugging that around to vacuum my floors. First 3 days with my "monster" and I had to clean my floors twice a day, just to pick up all the pet hair, dander and dust. By the fourth day my floors are actually shining, not a single trace of pet hair and I run it on a daily schedule at 3pm each day. When I get home my floors are spotless and I clean the monster and he picks up a good share of dirt, dust and pet hair but not as much as the first couple days. He runs a full hour (without a charge) and gets all 3 of my rooms clean and the debris bin is full, but not overflowing and the brushes and rollers are easy to clean. I'm now asking my husband to get me the latest Roomba for my CHristmas present this year so that I can now do my second floor which is wall-to-wall carpeting. I am amazed and happy to know this is one chore I don't have to do anymore!!.
Pros: Cleans Effectively, Cleans Under Furniture, Easy To Use, Hassle Free Operation
Cons: Noisy
