Their vocabulary and turns of phrase are as clever and unique as ever, and the band’s acoustic style is again filled with beautiful harmonies and fast-paced rhythms. I found that the lyrics of “Chutes Too Narrow”, while retaining their eccentric qualities, were easier to follow than those of the first album, “Oh Inverted World”. At first glance they seem a bit random, but an understanding of the words as a whole came to me after I thought about them for a while. They are playful and meaningful at the same time. The phrase “…I fell into a winter slide, and ended up the kind of kid who goes down chutes too narrow, just eking out my measly pies…” from the song “Young Pilgrims” is just one example of the poetic quality of the lyrics. They show contemplation of the mysteries of human nature and societal discord as well as a questioning of the spiritual standards of society. This album is an asset to any musical library.
