I am a big fan of science fiction, however, I do believe that 90% of the Sci-Fi out there is terrible. Firefly is definitely a hidden gem that lands in the top 10%.
Had it not been for inconsistent time slots, Firefly would have become a TV success to surpass all of Joss Whedon's (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel) previous projects. However, despite being canceled early in it's life, this box inspired enough loyal supporters to warrant a follow-up wide-release film, Serenity.
The plot synopsis will catch you up on what the show is about, but as a fan, I highly recommend giving it a shot. After episode 13, you'll be clambering to track down Serenity.
What's great about it: High production value, quality scripts, origianl world(s), and great acting

From the mind of Joss Whedon, creator of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", "Angel", "Dollhouse", and "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" comes this short-lived but beloved space adventure. FIREFLY is a "space western" set 500 years in the future, long after mankind has abandoned Earth in favor of a new galaxy. The story follows the crew of the Firedly-class transport ship Serenity, a ragtag group of outlaws, fugitives, and eccentrics led by Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), a war veteran. Constantly on the run from the bureocratic Alliance, pirates, and other outlaws, Captain Mal and the crew try to make a living as best they can.
Though this series was cruelly treated by Fox and cancelled after only 9 aired episodes, it has gone on to become a beloved cult classic with millions of fans called "Browncoats" worldwide. Among those fans are a few NASA astronauts, who have brought the series up for viewing on the International Space Station! The series is rich with Whedon's trademark humor and clever dialogue, but it also excels in telling unique dramatic stories. The entire cast is terrific, the special effects still look good today, and the science of the space-travel is for the most part accurate, something almost unheard of in sci-fi! If you're a fan on the genre, you owe it to yourself to check this series out.
What's great about it: One of the most unique and enjoyable sci-fi series of all time
What's not so great: It got cancelled far too soon!

I saw the movie first because I didn't know there was a series. Fox did a horrible job promoting this series;I am a sci-fi fan and I never even heard of it until early 2009 after I happened to notice the movie at a friends house. I love this show - every single actor, every character, every part - it is so much fun.
What's great about it: The show, the actors, the storys.
What's not so great: Whoever actually made the DVD set seems to have cheaped-out.

I, like so many other, first watched this show after it had already been scheduled for removal from the network. Up until that time, my thinking had been 'Cowboy Sci-Fi? I don't think so'. Now I've joined the saddened legions of viewers that regret not being able to see any more episodes.
There have been other excellent sci-fi tv shows (Star Trek - Next Generation, Battle Star Gallactica). Firefly is not these, is something else unique that pulls you in from the pilot show.
Yes, due in large part to fan demand, they made a movie (Serenity) to help all of us struggling with Firefly withdrawals. It did not satisfy, but instead gave you 1 final taste of greatness before sending fans spiraling down into bitter remorse.
On second thought, don't watch Firefly. The high it gives you is not worth the crash on the other side. Ok it is, but the crash sucks.
What's great about it: Captivating story, Intriguing characters
What's not so great: Show was cancelled after the first season

This show was recommended by a friend to watch and after watching the first two episodes, I was hooked and had to finish the entire series over two nights.
The acting and characters really lure you in. It has great dialog, great storyline, humorous and interesting characters, basically all the the elements the networks hate giving us intelligent humans to watch.
I actually saw it a few years ago but it was from a borrowed copy so I felt it was important to show my gratitude and I buy my own.

For anyone who enjoys good scifi, this show is for you. The cast works perfect together, the story and universe is perfect, and you always look forward to the next episode, right up until the crushing realization that the series is over, cancelled in its prime.
What's great about it: Perfect plot, characters, and well, everything
What's not so great: Nothing, this show was perfection
