I have owned the SONY VPLHW40ES Projector for 6 months... A GREAT HOME THEATER PROJECTOR... Sharp picture with HDTV and blu ray. Great contrast, accurate colors and very bright. My screen is huge (143" Diagonal) and my friends and family have all been shocked and amazed at the overall picture quality. I couldn't be more pleased with this projector.

I upgraded from a still working Sony VPL-HS20 projector that I've had for 10 years. I am very happy with all the functionality including the black levels. Great picture and color balance right out of the box!

I have been waiting for some time to invest in a projector system. I have no regrets with this investment. This projector may be an entry level projector from Sony, but it performs awesomely. We use a Oppo BDP-105D for our source, so please take that into account concerning this review. We are more audiophiles than videophiles.
We are projecting the image ~13ft to a 106" screen, with the projector on a shelf above us near the ceiling. We cannot hear the projector otherwise. We can hear the unit gently click on and off...that is it. Hearing any projector fan over our large ceiling fan or the audio of what we are watching is not possible.
Modern sources (Netflix, Roku, etc.) are all good, HD is better than SD, but Blu ray is absolutely amazing! This projector impresses me in every aspect. My only critique is the blotchiness (or digitized movement) that you can see when complex backgrounds and multiple characters move in a scene. (I have not been able to verify that this is not due to the content, but Oppo is knows for great video processing) Part of the image (scene or character) will pause then jump the the next position rather than a smooth transition. This is being really picky, but if you have a scene with many characters moving and the background also moving (or the camera zooming or panning at the same time) it looks like the projector cannot process this as quickly as it does less complex scenes (90+ % of all content we have watched over the last 8 months).
You can use one of the 9 calibrated presets to help improve the picture depending on the source, lighting, or personal preference. These presets all work very well. Again the digitized blotchiness is acceptable as it rarely happens and everything else from this projector is awesome.
This projector is similar to really high end audio equipment, you start to understand what a poor audio recording sounds like. Using this projector will turn you into an HD video snob...quality content and source are key. We are motivated to get all new Blu ray content just to experience it with our home theater, as we hardly make it to a movie theater any more.
We've watched everything from live football, DVD, SD and HD content, local HD broadcasts, and Blu ray for almost a year. This projector will show you every blade of grass on the PGA Tour as well as freak you out with the facial detail of your less-than-attractive local news anchor. It will also show you that SD is now difficult to watch compared to HD and Blu ray. I've stuck with Sony, mostly XBR, TVs for two decades...now I am a convert to the Sony projector. It is difficult to imagine what any of the more costly projectors can improve upon. The marketing people at Sony are going to have a difficult time explaining that.
Set up is super easy and intuitive as well. Even when including the cost of the screen, long HDMI cables, custom shelf, etc, this project beats out any equally priced (and more expensive) TV we've ever witnessed.

Best bag for the buck in front projectors

Verified Purchase:Yes
I have owned several front projectors. All have their advantages and disadvantages. This Sony projector offers fantastic color saturation. The picture is extremely sharp and all the reality creation adjustments work as advertised. You can fine tune the picture to be sooth like film or razor sharp to the point it almost looks 3D. 3D looks very natural and smooth. Brightness is not an issue even on a sunny day in a room with 7 windows the picture is still enjoyable.

Great Projector!

I've only had the Sony VPL-HW40ES for a couple weeks, but we can't get enough of it. I have it connected to a new Sony blu-ray player thru a new Sony 7.1 receiver with high speed HDMI cables, and the picture on a 110" screen is stunning. DVD's and HD cable are also as sharp or better than the 50" plasma this replaced. Haven't tried 3D yet.
I can't say enough about how quiet the fan is. I can only hear it during cool down, right after everything is turned off and the room is silent. My last projector and others I've been around had enough fan noise that it was distracting.

Best projector for the Money!
on October 27, 2014

I am so impressed with the Sony VPLHw40ES. I have looked at several JVC Projectors and for the price and performance I would recommend this projector over a JVC 100% of the time. I have owned CRT's, DLP, LCD, and SXRD projectors from companies like Barco, Sharpvision, Benq, Optoma, and Panasonic and none can compare to this projector. Fantastic projector for a fantastic price. My only regret is that I didn't have enough money to upgrade to a 4K unit.
