GREAT Printer, But A PC Adjustment May Be Needed
on January 30, 2013

First of all, I researched the all-in-one printer market extensively before purchasing the Epson WF-3540 printer. Everywhere I looked, this printer received the highest scores in overall customer satisfaction, with other Epson printers following close behind. So I felt very comfortable purchasing the Epson brand; it was just a matter for me as to which printer to buy. I can say that so far I have not been disappointed!
Installation was fairly easy with the step-by-step directions and drawings that were included (you need to follow them rather than try to set up the machine on your own). Once the printer was installed, I had no problem printing beautiful pages FAST (the latter part surprised me - former reviews I had read didn't emphasize this, although the printer box clearly states "world's fastest all-in-one"). The text was such high quality that I printed resumes this morning for a job fair with this machine rather than drag out my old laser printer. The copy function was the same way - I can't tell the difference between the original and the copy, both for b/w text and color photos. (By the way, I LOVE being able to make color copies!)
The only difficulty I had was with scanning. Regardless of whether I pushed the scan button on the printer or the icon on my computer, the system would only return with a communication error. I called the Epson technical support line (the number is in the manual on page 35), and apparently my situation was so rare that the initial customer rep had to refer me to Level 2 support for resolution. That person had no trouble diagnosing and resolving the issue. I have a new laptop. Apparently the PC manufacturer had installed imaging software in the twain_32 folder, and it was over-riding the Epson program. All that needed to be done was to move the PC manufacturer software to a different folder. So the problem rested with the PC, not the printer. I did want to state this in case you experience the same problem; if in doubt, just call the Epson hot line.. Once that step was completed. the scanner immediately started working.
I have not faxed anything yet, but don't anticipate any issues. All-in-all, I couldn't be happier with this purchase.

I am leaning towards taking back if Epson doesn't step in and help. This printer has 2 trays for 2 different types of paper but so far not the function to utilize the 2 seperately. For a buisness for just 8X10 paper it may be great but for personal use that you want to keep photo paper in one tray and white paper in the other, it is not working out so well-

Letters & Envelopes

I got this printer because I am volunteering for a non-profit, so I print letters & envelopes a lot. The 2 trays work perfectly with paper in the bottom tray and envelopes in the top; then I can print letter, envelope, letter, envelope and have not had a misfeed yet. With my old printer it was exhausting having to switch the papers in and out of the one paper try.

Great printer/scanner with some AirPrint caveats
on June 16, 2013

Overall, this is a great printer, scanner, and copier (we don't use the fax feature). It's fast, has good print and photo quality, scans quickly, is solidly constructed, etc.
Our only issue is with the somewhat limited paper handling. It seemed that with a manual slot and two 250 page trays it would handle any situation. But this is misleading. The second paper tray can only be used for letter or legal pages and the manual slot will not work with 4x6" photo paper. Photo paper can ONLY be used in tray one. This wouldn't be a problem except that the printer isn't smart enough to know which tray has what kind of paper.
This is especially apparent when printing photos from an iOS device (iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch) using AirPrint. Say you have photo paper in tray one and print an email from your iPhone. The printer prints the letter-sized email onto the 4x6" photo paper. There's no way to tell the printer in the AirPrint dialog that you want to use tray two. The printer should handle this automatically, but it doesn't.
So, it's not a great pick if you plan to regularly print a mix of photos and regular documents from an iOS device. It seems like this could be fixed with a firmware update, so let's hope the printer gains some smarts.

Epson WorkForce WF-3540 exceeds expectations
on April 11, 2015

I know y'all are gonna think I work for Epson but I'm truly ecstatic over my Epson WorkForce WF-3540 AIO printer. I've owned several all-in-one printers. At first I thought, "What if the printer breaks, then the scanner will be useless." They do eventually stop working but by then they're often obsolete.
-BEST-
I've owned several printers, including Epson. I've never seen one of better quality than Epson, even the famous HP. But after all, it's VALUE that makes the difference. My WF-3540 with professional grade sheet feeder, two-sided copy, and wireless capability truly make it perfect for the small office.
-COST-
I've had mine just over 2 years. The ink is expensive but no worse than other printers including the famous Kodak which promised cheaper ink. I've owned both. In the long run I've found the Epson better quality and less expensive to operate when you consider overall cost.
You would not believe how much money you save in wasted paper by setting your 2-sided printer to automatically print 2-sided copies. We've cut our output nearly in half! I've printed about 30 reams (15,000 pages) without so much as a burp. I have not kept up with how many ink cartridges we've purchased but we print a lot. We find ourselves paying only a little more for ink but less for paper AND a LOT less for a new printer (this one replaced two others and has outlasted both).
-VALUE-
In total cost per printed page, if you include the cost of wasted paper and having to buy a new printer every year to 18 months, this Epson is far LESS expensive to operate and lots more fun. I can do anything the big guys can do except large scale print (larger than legal size).
If someone asked, "Would you recommend this printer," my response would be an immediate, "Heck yeah!"

Epson WorkForce WF-3540 - Excellent
on December 1, 2012

I have owned competitive printers for years. 15 months ago I purchased an 8500a from another company, that I won't mention, that worked fine. Then last month it kept printing lines across images even though I cleaned the printhead about half a dozen times and even purchased replacement heads. I was pretty disappointed when the new printheads just didn't solve the problem; AND this printer constantly cleaned the printheads practically after every print job (a procedure that uses up a significant amount of ink when printed), a feature that at first I thought was a good idea to keep the printer working like new.
I own an Epson Stylus Photo R340 that I use to print onto CD/DVD and it has worked for years, so I decided to try an Epson all-in-one.
The Epson Workforce WF-3540 works excellently thus far. I've printed from a Macbook Pro, an iPad, my android phone (email and webpages), and even from my office miles away just to check to see if the features worked...they do! I also run Windows on my Mac through a program that enables you to run Windows and the Mac OS in parallel, and was able to print from the office any document I want just by clicking "print" once I set up the printer software. So far the image quality is great.
To save money in the future, it's great that I can replace the maintenance box on the back of the WF-3540, and other printers by Epson, once it fills up with wasted ink from cleaning printheads, saving the expense of having to buy a new printer so frequently.
Also great is the two tray feature. Now I keep plain paper in tray 2 (which can only support plain paper) and photo/specialty/plain paper in tray 1 so I don't have to keep taking out the plain paper to print photos! 500 sheet capacity using both trays combined is awesome!
EPSON, I'm hooked!

This is the best printer I have owned. This is my first Epson printer, and am very impressed with it. Set up was really easy, it prints a lot faster than other printers and like the double sided printing on it as well. It works great printing from my ipad as well.

What a letdown!

I've had this printer just over two weeks. It does make beautiful prints ... if you have the patience to wait for them. I have the printer set up wirelessly in a small home office where the computer, printer and modem are not more that 10 feet apart. Epson claims to be fast [1 sided 15 IS0 ppm (black)] This is true if you are printing a document that is 15 pages long, as long as you wait 40 seconds from the time you send to the printer and it starts to print. If you are printing 15 different documents, it still requires the 40 second wait before printing starts for each document. I thought it might be the print spooler in my computer, so I set up a print test with my laptop, with the same results. I printed a full page, double spaced document. It took 2 minutes and 20 seconds to print. I would not call this fast. My HP photosmart completed the print in 18 seconds.
This printer has two paper trays which should switch paper from tray 1 to 2 when #1 runs out of paper. I have yet to have it work, even after resetting the printer to the required settings.
When I tried to print a document from the ADF tray, the display tells me that the "Original will be scanned from the scanner glass... remove the original from the ADF and plaace it on the scanner glass." What good is the ADF?
Enough said. I would not recommend this product to an enemy, let alone a friend!
