Excellent product

Our 3540 printer installed easily, works very well both locally & networked, and prints beautifully. The scanner allows you to read in a multi-page document, a big plus vs. competing products where you have to manually scan each page. The only reason I did not give it a "5" rating is you apparently cannot initiate remote scanning from the printer - it must be started from the computer.

A very good unit!

Background
--------------
I purchased this unit to replace a 10(?) year old Stylus CX6600 that Just-Up-And-Died. After researching available Epson All-in-Ones, I decided to on the Workforce WF-3540.
System info
--------------
Desktop Linux system (Ubuntu 12.04LTS). My version of CUPS (Linux printer utility) didn't have this model in its' driver library, so I had to search for one as the provided Installation disc didn't have any Linux drivers (just Windows and Mac). A quick Google search indicated a suitable driver was available at the Epson Support Site. While the Linux PRINTER driver installed without a hitch, the SCANNER drivers DID NOT want to install on my system (not a problem though - see the "Impressions: Scanner" section below). In my opinion, Epson should include Linux drivers on their Printer Installation Discs as the number of Linux users is many (and increasing).
General impressions
-----------------------
Construction: The printer seems "solidly" constructed - I didn't find anything I could call "flimsy". It is also a "decent-sized" unit, but it isn't all that heavy (considering all that's "packed into" it).
Footprint: You need at least an 18"x14" area of desk/table space and 23" above the printer (for raising the scanner lid).
The cable connections (USB and Ethernet) are on the LEFT SIDE of the printer (looking at the front) and are "recessed" so there's no cables "sticking out" of the printer. The power and telephone lines plug into the rear. This provides for convenient "against the wall" placement for space-saving.
This printer has Wi-Fi capability for "cloud" printing and the printer will auto-detect any active Wi-Fi connections during its' initial setup. If you don't have Wi-Fi, DISABLE IT via the "Wi-Fi Setup" option on the LCD screen (it's the last item in the list)! failing to do so could result in accidental (or "intentional") Unwanted Printing via "cloud hackers".
There are TWO front-installed paper trays, which is a very nice feature for "office" use (i.e., use one for letter paper and the other for envelopes). For "home" users, the 2nd tray can be used to hold MORE PAPER for printing. Their capacities are slightly less than one ream, but if you use both trays, one ream (500 sheets) can be split between them for lots-of-printing-before-running-out-of-paper operation.
There is a "single-sheet" paper feeder at the rear of the printer, but I recommend NOT USING IT as it doesn't seem to "straight-feed" any pages put into it. HOWEVER, if you're using paper longer than 11" long (i.e., "legal"), you'll have to use it.
The "paper guide" easily removes from the REAR of the printer for clearing paper jams and such. Unfortunately, this means you have to "pull out" the printer to clear a paper jam.
The output tray is in front and extends 7". Bear this in mind if you locate the printer near a "traffic" area as you don't want someone "clipping" the tray when they walk by it! Thankfully, rotating of the printer can solve this problem (providing you don't impede the raising/lowering of the scanner cover or accessing the paper trays).
The scanner cover has a document auto-feeder that can handle B5/A4/LTR size paper. You must place SINGLE-SIDED document(s) FACE-UP in the feeder or they won't get copied right. Otherwise, 2-sided documents will be processed correctly (make sure you have "2-sided" mode set before you make a copy). The closed cover can accommodate a "book" up to 1/2" thick; anything thicker requires the cover to be open.
Noise: For an ink-jet, this printer is VERY QUIET compared to others. The only real "noise" occurs after loading ink cartridges, using the document feeder, and when the printer "sucks in" paper. Scanning is INAUDIBLE compared to the CX6600. Even "waking up" (from Power Save) and actual printing is fairly quiet - comparable to that of a laser printer in operation. This is a real plus in a home/small office environment.
Setup
-------
Printer setup is not difficult: unpack it, select a location, plug it into a wall outlet, turn the printer on, then let the printer go through its' "automatic setup" routine (self-test, prompt for installing ink cartridges, etc.). NOTE: if using the Ethernet interface, the printer will "automatically" select an IP address and display it on the LCD screen. In Most Cases, this will be sufficient, however others will want to manually configure the wired Ethernet IP address, etc. to suit "their setups". After this is done, load the paper, connect the Ethernet cable, then download/install the Linux driver (see below). After completing these operations (took about an hour total), the printer was ready for use (NOTE: my "setup experience" is not typical due to using Linux instead of Windows or Mac systems).
Operations
--------------
Setup/use: Printer functions are accessed via the touch-sensitive LCD screen on the front - just press the "item" on the screen to select it. The function/setup menus are fairly intuitive (though some function menus are "multi-layered"). Illuminated "scroll" arrows appear around the screen, as required, for accessing menu items - just press them to scroll up/down/left/right to access the desired Menu Item. "Undo" (back-curling arrow) and "Home" (house) icons appear when any function is selected.
Printing: one word - ** QUICK **! I thought my CX6600 was a pretty fast printer, but this unit is MUCH FASTER - printing roughly 4 TIMES FASTER and "about as fast" as a comparable Laser-class printer. Print quality is SUPERB (at this time - the printer is still "brand new" at the time of this "review" ;) ), even at the default "text quality" setting (NOTE: If you're "ink-stingy", selecting "draft" quality will still give good-quality output).
Scanning: scanner function, like printing, is VERY FAST AS WELL, even at the higher DPI resolutions (in MONO/LINEART mode - COLOR mode is, naturally, slower in operation). For unknown reasons, the Epson-provided Linux scanner driver/utilities didn't want to load on my system. This is not a problem as the "Simple Scan" utility (a part of my installed system) WORKS FLAWLESSLY (When started it IMMEDIATELY "locates" the scanner and is ready to operate)! I can also directly scan into LibreOffice with no problems (though using high (>300) DPI settings AND "color" scan mode does result in "slow" scan speeds). IMPORTANT: UNLESS YOU NEED COLOR/HIGH-RESOLUTION SCANS, use "mono/lineart" and 300 DPI (or lower) scan settings for fastest scanning speeds to your computer applications.
Copying: copying is VERY FAST, even when doing "color" copying. Again, keep the copy resolution at "draft" or "standard" and use B&W mode for fastest operation.
Extras: This printer can directly read from/scan to SD and MemoryStick cards. If you have non-supported memory cards (i.e., CompactFlash) just connect a "multi-card" reader to the printer's USB PORT (located under the SD/MS port) to access non-supported memory cards. NOTE: it takes a minute (or so) for the printer to "read" the contents of an installed card.
Faxing: This printer has fax capability and is used when the phone cable is connected to the unit and an active phone jack (there is a "pass-thru" phone jack if the unit has to "share" a phone jack). The LCD will display a "phone keypad" when this function is selected.
Power-saving: The printer will "go to sleep" after 10 min. (approx). This value can be changed/disabled via front-panel Setup option. When the printer is "sleeping", it immediately (i.e., less than 2 seconds!) "wakes up" when a print job is sent or the LCD is pressed (for copying, etc.)
Summary:
---------------
Overall, I'm VERY PLEASED AND SATISFIED with this unit and I expect it to last as long as the Epson all-in-one it replaced. :) It's definitely worth what I paid.

Doesn't support duplex of legal size paper

Overall this is a good printer. The one disappointment is that they failed to mention that, while the trays support legal size paper, the printer doesn't support duplex printing for legal size paper.

Excellent for Text, Spreadsheets and scans thereof, but I haven't been able to print a SINGLE photo that is free of lines, no matter if from Preview, Photoshop, iPhoto or Aperture.

UGH!

I really do not like this printer. It prints poorly, no matter how many times I try to clean/align the printer heads, there are missed lines. It's picky and gets paper jams no matter how many different kinds of paper I try. I am just waiting for it to konk out completely and move to a better brand (not just model).

Last printer you will ever need

where do I start? The WF-3540 is suitable for small offices that need dependability and performance. I use it as my home personal printer. I bought it because I could no longer print anything on my old printer (Lexmark 5560) when pressing "print" from my pc (or any pc) even after repeatedly uninstalling and reinstalling the software. The WF-3540 installed first time with no problems and it was very user friendly. The multiple features was what caught my attention with it's 500 sheet capacity and automatic double sided printing, scanning, copying. Wi-Fi hooked up great and I was printing from my Android in minutes. Awesome! An additional feature you rarely find on other printers is the USB port where you can plug in your thumb drive and print straight from that. The printing speed is the fastest compared to other similar models in its category and the quality is better than what one would expect. I have printed many photographs with this printer and unless you are an ultra picky professional photographer you would never believe the quality and clarity it produces. I was impressed. But the biggest feature of all that sold me was the fact that you can purchase extra high capacity ink color cartridges so you aren't running out of ink after printing a few photos. (I'm still on my original cartridges) And the price of the cartridges was less than I expected to pay too. The price of the printer itself was way lower than one would expect to pay, for a printer that has all these features. Epson really hit the nail on the head with the WF-3540, sure to be a popular favorite for many.

The printer/fax/copier works great. The only down side is that if one print cartridge goes out, the others don't work.. That's frustrating and expensive.
