A near perfect all in one printer

I like to print my own photos. I also like the concept of an all in one printer. The HP 7520e represents my conclusion to a search to find a great all in one printer that will be hassle free on a day to day bases, be simple to use, easily connect to my home wireless system and still deliver above average photo printing.
In the past I judged an "all in one" printer the same way I judged photo specific printers. First and foremost would be photo print quality. I've owned two "all in one" printers based on this selection process and both delivered wonderful photos. On the other hand neither were "family friendly". Their extra ink cartridges added extra cost to their already higher purchase price and their ease of use and network connectivity left a lot to be desired. Paper jams and "check the print heads" and recalibration became the norm.
This time around I decided to use a different "all in one" printer selection process. Find a printer that is simple to use, does not give me headaches and prints better than average rather than the best possible photos. The HP Photosmart 7520e became my number one choice. The setup couldn't have been easier. The standard print quality is excellent. I've not had a single issue with paper jams or anything else. The printer is on our home wireless system and works equally well with my Dell XPS, my wife's iPad mini with retinal display and the Apple iMac I use for music production. No issues. No problems. No headaches. Perfect.
The photo print quality could be a little better but, from past experience I've learned you can't have it all. As a best "all in one" printer I believe the HP Photosmart 7520e to be highly representative of that classification.

Printer is fast & produces excellent quality.

Most of my printing is at 300 dpi, so speed is extremely fast. I access printer from 2 computers -- one by USB and one via wireless modem. I especially like that the printing icon in the tool tray of my Windows screen stays visible until the wireless print job is complete. It does not just send the job blindly, but gets completion feedback so that you have confidence of a successful print from a remote location. And by the way, you can send print jobs direct to the printer from virtually any device that has Internet access and from any location.
Photo printing is excellent quality and the dual paper tray make it even easier to use this feature. Printer automatically detects the photo orientation (portrait or landscape), so you do not need to mess with setup or reposition the paper.
Two sided copies are so easy. You do not need to remove the odd page copies, turn and reinsert them. The printer prints one side of each page, pulls it back in, flips it, and prints the reverse. Final product is in the tray with proper order and ready to staple.
The only glitch I had was initial setup. The CD did not open and run on my Windows XP system. I called HP service and they talked me through download of compatible drivers and had me going in both of my computers in less than an hour. The tech was very proficient and helpful.
One minor design issue: The printer is very fast and will toss the finished copy out onto the floor. You need to orient the printer to prevent this or open a desk drawer to catch the printed page. A lift out tab to catch the paper would be an improvement. I might have to design my own.

Talk about easy

No instruction manual given, no instruction manual needed. I mean Talk about EASY. As compared to all printers I have ever set up this has been the best customer experience. Simple pamphlet showing you to remove tape, plug in power cord, press power follow on-screen instructions, DONE. everything you need to know about setting it up is on the screen and walks you through with little animations of how to install ink and paper. Connection to Wi-Fi was a breeze, simply scan for your network, type in your router password, DONE. Unit will install updates, DONE, really this time.
Prints from Smartphone: Download HP ePrint (and optional Printer control) app from Google play on your smartphone and you're off and printing your pictures, no computer needed. Buy one for your parents, set up the printer on your smartphone and now you can print vacation photos straight to your parents while still on vacation (Data connection assumed :) ). it's kind of cool to come home to a stack of pictures ready sitting in the print-out tray.
Scan to e-mail works as it should. when you get ready to scan to e-mail you have to enter the e-mail address then the printer sends an activation code to the e-mail, you then have to enter the code on the printer screen and select store e-mail address (this way you only have to do it once). So if you find yourself sending something to your mother; as I was, you will need to call her and tell her to forward you the e-mail from the printer so you can get the code. Have fun explaining that one...
NEGATIVES: Ok there are a few things that need to be improved.
-The printer is able to download apps, say Disney coloring pages for your kids. Well even though the printer will download and install updates without issue, I found it difficult to download these apps. After reading other reviews, I moved my printer closer to my Wi-Fi router and was able to complete the task. Seems like if I can get updates at a particular signal strength, I should be able to get apps. HP FIX THIS! Really! This maybe the only reason someone buys this printer over another and it does not work unless I am 5 feet from my router. create a patch to change the timeout or other network parameters to match the update workflow and done. If that doesn't work then something is wrong with your app store!
-Prints come out darker than expected. I did not attempt to fix this from the printer side yet as I already had a photo editing app (Perfectly clear) on my smart phone in which I was already tweaking my pictures with anyways. So I just used this app to brighten the picture beyond what looks good on my smartphone and it printed out perfect. Seems like what I see on my screen should be what should printed out. What are you using as your baseline to determine starting brightness? Whatever it is, it is too dark. Grab multiple smart phones, get the same pic on all of them, go with the brightest screen. DO NOT USE A MONITOR OR NOTEBOOK. You know the populous is moving away from their big screens and want to print straight from their phones (Notice I did not say tablets) and one can deduce that you should see the same picture in your prints as on your screen, not a darker rendering.
About ownership:
- less than 2 weeks
- only have printed pictures, no documents
- used scanner to send document directly to others via e-mail (No computer needed!) directly from printer

Excellent quality for home use

The printer has the features I need (scanner, copier, color photo printer) plus one feature I may need (fax). The price is quite a bit lower than I expected. (They make money on comsumables, I presume.)
I love that it connects to my home's local wi-fi network.
Excellent: print quality, especially on the photo paper. There is a separate tray for the photo paper, and another for regular copy paper.
Printing from iPhoto automatically selected the photo paper tray.
Excellent: scan quality. The PDF is sent to your email address
Setup is easy.
I like that you can print on it from any device on your network via email (no driver or app needed) This is great for guests.
I was able to print from my iPad and iPhone using an app, and from my MacBook using the downloaded printer driver.
Minor drawbacks:
No manual
Care must be taken to adjust the feed for your orginals, otherwise the scan will be crooked.
There is internet based content you can print on a scheduled basis. It is too easy to print those accidentally. So I advise disabling them from the web site via your computer. They can be fun, but use up your ink.
Overall, I am very pleased with this printer for home use.

The Best One Yet

I did substantial research on a lot of different printers/brands, and I came back to what was the best of them all. This HP 7520 printer has it all. It is built solid, and unlike what others may have said, this printer is not a ink hog. The wireless feature works flawless, along with its apps, and it does just what it describes it can do. Sometimes with other printers you will not get all features to perform as promised, but with this printer I'm totally convinced that HP took some time to make it work perfect. The photo tray will hold either 5x7 or 4x6 photo paper, and it prints these as perfect as you would ever want. It is a quiet printer and extremely fast on draft setting. All I can say is that I'm very happy with this purchase and I'm sure anyone looking for a printer would be happy with this also. It does help of course to have some knowledge on how to go about setting up your printer. There is not a lot of help in the box, but you can find it online. Enjoy!!!!

I was amazed at how quickly my order arrived and how easy it was to set up the printer. The print quality is excellent and I have the added bonus of being able to use the ink cartridges from my previous printer. (My previous HP printer is still working fine but I wanted the eprint capability of the new printer.) Another bonus is the top rating of this printer by Consumer Reports which I didn't see until after my purchase. I highly recommend this printer.

This HP Photosmart 7520 printer prints vivid and color-accurate photos. I wish I had a wireless home network so that I could take advantage of its wireless capability, but even just using it to manually copy, print, fax or scan, this model is awesome. It has a touch-screen for choosing which function you want to use, which makes it very user-friendly. The only thing negative that I would comment on is that the printer is a little noisy while it is printing - other than that, I am very pleased and happy that I chose to purchase it.

Great printer - Great price

I expected a lot from the HP Photosmart 7520 & have not been disappointed. (Since I wanted the landline port, I got the 7520 instead of the 7510.) I've scanned documents using the flat bed & the sheet feeder & both are great. The print & copy functions are wonderful & the fax works great, too. I like the touch screen on the unit & also the HP Printer Assistant. The menus are easy to navigate & offer lots of options. The quality on every feature is just excellent. I also like the forms available through the web feature. I even like the available apps & scheduled a crossword puzzle to be delivered daily. HP's Photosmart 7520 is perfect. It does everything I need & does it well. I couldn't be more pleased with it.
