Poor Design and Problematic
on June 29, 2013

I have held off reviewing this washer until it had been in use for at least 3 months. I will detail the reasons for its poor rating in the hope that it will keep others from making the mistake of purchasing this poorly designed and troublesome product.
First understand that this “High Efficiency” washer does not allow you to adjust the water level. It is done automatically by sensing the weight of the load. This means that often it will fill only several inches and your wash load sloshes around and parts of the laundry never are submersed in water. According to LG this is normal and just a “new” type of washing process.
If however you want a more complete fill where the load actually is submersed and agitated there are ways to accomplish this. One is to use the “bulky bedding “setting which will fill the tub to a higher level typically to the top. This is considerably more water than is needed for most loads and will often lead to unbalanced conditions during the spin cycles.
Another method to induce a higher water level is to pause the washer after the initial fill and readjust the load and restart it. The washer will than re-sense the load and add more water.
If you are getting the idea that this washer requires your active participation in using it read on. The washer will often go out of balance during the spin cycle. It will try and rebalance itself by fully draining and totally refilling and spinning the load out again. If it is still out of balance it will shut down with an error code. So this “High Efficiency” unit ends up using twice the water from an unbalanced conditioned. The only way to avoid this additional fill is to pause the washer and readjust the load to avoid the inevitable unbalanced conditioned. You get to go through this same scenario when the washer spins out the rinse cycle.
The larger the load the worse the unbalanced condition. I have found that modest loads easily done without issue in our last conventional washer must now be broken in to 2 or 3 very small loads. Hardly efficient and requiring you to actively watch over every load.
I should also point out that the “Bulky Bedding” setting necessary for sheets or towels will often lead to your wash load being twisted together.
If you can live with the constant checking of each load and cycle this washer is still poor quality. In the short time we have owned it has had the following mechanical issues. While in the drain cycle it began to fill again. If I had not been checking the washer for a potential un balanced spin cycle it would have just drained and filled in definitely. LG replaced the fill valves and so far the condition has not reoccurred. Now the washer has developed a condition where it drains the wash load and skips the rinse cycle. This problem does not happen on every load. And unless you actively keep checking the cycles you will possible not even know that a rinsed cycle has been missed. As of this writing I am awaiting another service call from LG to address this problem.
Assuming the washer has no mechanical problems and you are only doing very small loads this washer may work for you. If however you need to wash loads of larger sizes this washer will require your constant attention and should be avoided.
Bottom line this is a poorly designed and problematic washer.

Uneven Loads

I was so excited to get this new washer. I have been terribly disappointed. It has performed correctly maybe 3 times in 3 weeks. Nearly every load no matter what the size is out of balance and takes hours to complete. My husband spent 8 hours yesterday trying to wash 2 loads of clothes. I finally put the load of whites in the dryer at 10:30pm. This is unbelievably frustrating for a family of 5 that needs to wash frequently and has limited time to get it done. Never so disappointed in any product I have ever purchased. At this point, I cannot recommend this appliance at all.
Pros: disappointing

Skeptic becomes believer

I was skeptical that any top-loader could perform without a center post. Additionally, we read some reviews of these types of machines not using enough water for large loads or doing poorly with small loads, etc. Also, my wife frequently adds clothes after the machine has started and we wondered how the locking lid would allow it? Then there was the issue of longer cycle times compared to our traditional center post top-loader. We bought our LG washer two months ago with the intention to take it back within the 30-day trial period if it didn't perform.
With a household of 8, the large capacity was a must, yet my wife regularly does small loads for certain types of clothes too. My college age boys are rough on a machine, they usually stuff the washer full with very little sorting.
One of the big tests came when they came home for break with what seemed like everything they took to school. My son asked on me to do his wash as he ran out the door. At first, I was going to refuse, but then I looked at it and said, "Let's see if this machine can handle this!"
I put the whole batch in at once, no sorting, loosely filling it to the top, selected the cold water normal cycle and added the HE detergent and some fabric softener. I watched through the glass lid. It "analyzed the load" and I watched to see if it put in enough water, it did. I watched the wash cycle for a while. Would that rhythmic swishing really wash the clothes? As I left, I wondered if it would go out of balance during the spin. When I came back it was all done, NO PROBLEM. Well, are they clean? I took them out examining them, looks OK. After drying them, I examined them as I folded, looks good.
Another test was the comforter from our king-sized bed...not a problem. It handled it along with the sheets using the "bulky" cycle.
My wife has done multiple small loads during this time. Not a problem. Very satisfied with the results. Ok with adding clothes, ok on cycle times (has a short cycle too), additionally, the clothes have less moisture in them due to high spin speed.
We have not had a single issue with it. Now, what if LG could make a folding machine....?

WORST WASHER EVER!!!
on March 28, 2015

I have had this washer for 3 years and hate it!!! A 35 min speed wash takes at least an hour to an hour and a half. It is always UE no matter what size the load is, and doesn't put enough water in to soap it up. I started this average size load 2 hours ago and it just finished I have to skip ahead to rinse and spin after a 40 minute wash...and this was the 35min speed wash!! After I use bleach in it I have to run a tub clean and an empty cycle to get the bleach out because it will still have some in it and has ruined loads not getting it all out. I will never buy another LG!!!
Pros: Performance, bad!!

Poor engineering

Update to my earlier review: Machine in use since 10/15/14.
There is apparently no way to adjust the water level. Even using "heavy load" setting, water does not nearly cover the clothes, and consequently does not properly clean them. We are finding it necessary to add about 1 gallon from a bucket to get clean clothes!
On rinse cycle, machine agitates, drains water, checks balance, then spins.
If balance is off, water is added, machine shakes the load, and checks balance again. We have found the machine full of water up to the top.
Large items cause this to happen frequently.
I have no way to tell how many times this could happen if you are not standing there to redistribute the clothes for balance.
Wasted water sort of blows the idea of "high efficiency".

I ABSOLUTELY HATE HATE HATE THIS WASHER!!!!!!

I thought I had purchased a great washer machine but boy was I wrong. Not only does this machine take almost 1.5 hours to wash a load but once the machine goes off balance...the wash can take as much as 2 to 2.5 hours. What I hate the most about this machine is that when the machine is unbalanced, instead of some type of signal or a pause in the wash, the machine will begin to fill up with water and restart to whichever cycle it was on when the machine became unbalanced!!!! IT IS THE MOST ANNOYING THING EVER. This machine waste so much money because since it will just refill each time it becomes unbalance, your water bill will increase and energy is wasted as the machine is a longer wash cycle. The machine is extremely sensitive so it will go unbalance for the smallest thing!!! I HATE THIS MACHINE!! I wish I could get my money back!!!! DO NOT PURCHASE THIS MACHINE unless you want to waste water and waste energy...Your bills will increase!!!

the end of this story is buy this washer....This is the washer the salesman really wanted me to buy among many other brands because of all the technical reasons --and those are the ones I really don't understand being not technical or mechanical, but I liked the way it looked and I trusted him. So I bought it. The next day after reading the manual-ok I don't like manuals either-I thought "WHAT HAVE I DONE???? Why did I buy this huge washer?!?!?! I live alone!! I could have gotten along with the cheapest washer available!! The smallest one!!! The one with the one page manual!! But then I loaded it up with my teeny bit of dirty clothes...and it knows it doesn't need much water!! And it knows how to be quiet!! And it knows I prefer a little tune than a buzzer to let me know when it's done!! And then I realized I don't have to go to the Laundromat when I want to wash my comforter and blankets and quilts!!!!!!! ...And I really didn't need my manual after all---this washer is very user friendly even for people like me. I LOVE THIS WASHER!!!!!

I bought this set a week ago. I followed LG’s instructions to the note for installing. New gas line, replaced the water valves and also updated the dryer venting by putting in a booster fan as my unit is nearly 65 feet to an outside wall. When the set arrived I leveled it spot on. The dryer passed the air flow test easily. I tested the washer per the manual, perfect. I took it for a test run and washed a small load of towels.
I selected all the options and hit start. Let me tell you forget everything you know about washing machines, this is not you Mothers washer. It went threw a series of adjustments spinning and stopping, jiggling the tub back and forth. Then it began filling with water, it determined the correct volume for my load size and filled quickly. It began the washing cycle, it is nothing like I have been used to seeing, it hardly made any noise and the sounds it did make was nothing like any washer I ever owned. In fact I got a phone call I put on speaker, after about 5 minutes my party asked what was I doing, I asked why and he said it sounds like you are running your bread machine. As it processed threw the cycle it never made a sound loader a small kitchen appliance. As it spun out the water there was very little if any cabinet movement. At one point it stopped and adjusted itself again, I think it was trying to center the load, after that it completed the cycle and the lid released. I inspected the results, the first thing I notice is how near dry everything was just damp feeling. As I continued all the items were very clean, spot free and evenly spun out. Next into the dryer with the freshly washed clothes, I used the recommended settings for this load. When the dryer first started it sounded odd to me so I stopped it and rechecked the load, all was ok so I proceeded, as the unit warmed up the sound became more of what I remember a dryer sounding like only much softer. The towles dried in 24 minutes, everything was evenly dry and soft to the touch. I then finished the week’s laundry load by load, each and every time the cycle time was different but the results the same, clean clean clean... This is has got to be the best washing system I have ever owned, if you are looking for a throw it in and take it out set in 20 minutes this one is not for you, However if you want you clothes to be treated gentle and laundered clean with a fraction of the water and soap. You will like your LG”s as much as I do. I do not need to wash 100 loads of laundry to know if it cleans cloths no more than I have to drive a fast sports car across the state to know it performs.
I have purchased other LG products, so I now their product support and commitment to customer satisfaction are every indication this product will be as reliable as the others I have in service. I highly recommend this product. If I had know how quite they would be I would have put them in the upstairs laundry closet, in fact I may still move them up at a
later date.
