Good Vlogging Camera for the Outdoor Adventurer
on May 3, 2019

I'd first like to mention that I received this camera from Sony as part of their ambassador program, but all thoughts are my own.
I spend a lot of my time outside in nature all over the world. I live for adventurous activities and documenting these experiences in both photo and video form. I also like the option of packing light in certain situations (ie. Hiking for hours on end). Sometimes I'm in situations where having a large camera and rig prevents me from getting the shot especially when people are involved. Big cameras can be intimidating! This camera is great for being discreet and takes up very little room in my camera bag...or any bag (I can easily throw it into my purse or small backpack), even with the grip attached. I LOVE that it has a flip screen. Seriously, if this camera can have a flip screen, why can't the A7 series or A9? As a vlogger, flip screens are a HUGE plus. The fact that the camera is water and dust proof makes it a great travel buddy for every type of adventure. The fact that the RX0 II comes equipped with a mic jack, so you can attach an external mic is also very impressive. Again, why can this be done with this super small camera but not the RX100 series?
Overall, I'd highly recommend this camera to anyone who is looking for a small but mighty all-purpose action camera to add to their tool kit.

New redesign

This would be the first smallest camera with a full frame sensor and full frame exmor R sensor and with an aperture at 1.2 and with continuous autofocus and a solid study shot for videos and photos and face defection all in a small and tiny compact design.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Would have been great if......

This camera would have been great for police uses. Its got a nice lens, its close-up abilities would work great for fingerprint photography, the high megapixels that would help to meet the 1000ppi for fingerprints, and its optical zoom over a digital zoom covers the interpolation, BUT with the max f-stop of 4.9 it gets dropped out of the running. Maybe the next version will hit f22.
What's great about it: Great lens, megapixels, optical zoom
What's not so great: Low range of f-stops

Thank you for reviewing the RX-100. The actual usable aperture range for the RX100 is from f/1.8 to f/11 which can lead to some nice nightscape images and much sharper backgrounds.

unimpressed thus far

I honestly hope to be changing my review at some point, but for now I'm just not a happy camper with this camera. I purchased it after significant online research as well as recommendations from several employees at my local camera store as an alternative for a concert camera, as it is impossible to get my full frame in anywhere. Two concerts so far, one outdoors, one indoors, one up close, one nosebleed seats and nothing worth anything from either show. I used some posted settings specifically for taking concert images with this model, and even pushed it to Auto at some point hoping to capture something worthwhile. I do not disregard that this could all be operator error, because I have gotten quite attached to my nicely weighted DSLR and its viewfinder; but point-and-shoots are consumer cameras so this would seem unlikely. Just to try and convince myself further I have taken some inside and outside shots but am simply not as impressed as the hundred or so others that have rated this camera as one of the best point-and-shoot that produces RAW files.

Hi Iamstrong,

We're saddened to hear that the camera didn't meet your standards. I would recommend visiting http://www.sonydigitalimaging.com/ and our youtube page SonyListens for tips and tricks on shooting with the DSCRX100.

Replacement
on February 13, 2017

This is a Replacement. My previous DSC-RX100 was purchased in 2014.On January 29th 2017 I activated the Camera by depressing the On/Off button and a set of Multi Colored Horizontal and Vertical lines appeared on the LCD Screen.I re-formatted the Memory Card and Initialized the Camera but was unable to resolve the problem.
I checked out an Authorized Sony Repair Facility Online and supplied the information about the LCD screen. The Cost that was required to repair the Camera was approximately $12.00 less than this New Camera.
I purchased this New Camera.

Great indoor action shots without flash!

Sharp pictures of people dancing taken by shaky photographer indoors without flash! Use the sports setting. It takes the pic when you push the button. No noticeable delay. Has lots of other features I'm not using.
I would recommend this to a friend!

I bought this camera to photograph a trip to Ireland in 2015. Takes great photos. Dec. 2019 my camera was stolen from my home. I am replacing it with the newer RX100 VA.
I would recommend this to a friend!
