Excellent Travel Camera

I've taken photos and short videos all over the world with this camera. There are more powerful cameras, longer lenses, etc., but THIS IS THE ONE I TAKE!! It is small in size, excellent to handle, razor sharp Zeiss Lens, FULL-SIZE excellent view finder as well as the led viewer (I wear glasses, this is the best, crisp - razor sharp viewfinder), and the SENSOR captures EVERYTHING ... excellent in very very low night light. With the leather 'Sony' case, it is very well protected ... it is not a fragile camera ... but don't push, take care and it will put a BIG SMILE on your face!

Two months ago I bought a Sony RX100 M3 and have used it extensively in a wide range of lighting conditions and on different subjects. As a former user for decades of a professional SLR (film), and owner of other point&shoot digital cameras, this camera is astonishing. From p&s to manual and everything in between! At a recent wedding in my family, the professional photographer came up to me and told me he uses one as a back-up (then told me to get out of his way).

My wife and I took a recent trip to Madrid, Spain and Marrakech, Morocco. Weight was an issue, since we were backpacking, and the RX 100 III delivered. We needed a camera that was small, light-weight, and capable of producing excellent pictures and video. We bought the camera two days before our vacation, and the interface was so easy to learn, that we taught ourselves on the train! The video was shot from a terrace about 30m in distance. As you can see, this camera does it all. We loved the Electronic View Finder feature, and as a whole, feel that we definitely got our money's worth.

A Versitile and pocketable Gem

Professional photography was once my life, now I shoot photographs strictly for fun and family reasons. I looked for a pocket-able camera, which would hold up its end like the big boys. I had owned a previous Sony for a decade before, and I once even used it to photograph British Royalty, it had great optics, but I still could not carry in my pocket.
I needed a small camera, with a fast lens for using available light, and superb image quality. After much research I opted for the DSC-RX-100.
That was a few moths ago, and since then I have had no regrets, the RX-100 does everything it says on the box and much more. The image quality is top-notch, as is the construction, I keep it in the leather-like carry case and find that the lower part best to leave on while shooting, otherwise the camera feels a bit small for my hands.
I shoot mostly people portraits and nature and the lens is brilliant for my needs, however, you may wish a longer zoom, but I do not.
In all the RX-100 camera is typical Sony quality, and a great successor to the one I had owned for over a decade before.
For me it was just what I needed to keep me satisfied.

I take this camera wherever I go, especially hiking. No way am I about to bring 30 pounds of camera gear to a 6-hour hike. Plus, especially during this pandemic, it's important to use a small camera around the city. So many people are getting robbed in the streets.
I learned to use this camera by reading DK's Beginner's Photography Guide. Now, the camera is so easy to use that I even started using the Manual setting instead of automatic. I've included some of my fav. photos from this camera. Enjoy!

My love affair with Sony cameras continues
on February 21, 2013

A while ago I wrote a review on my Alpha A65 - I still love the camera and it takes amazing photos but I travel a lot with my job and it's not always practical to take the A65 with me, so after a lot of research I opted for the RX-100 as my 'short trip' camera. As always, I read a lot of reviews, watched a lot of videos and went to a store to try out the RX-100 and it's nearest competitors before buying.
Yet again, in my opinion, Sony was 'head and shoulders' above the competition.
The RX-100 is a wonderful camera, it goes everywhere with me. The quality of the pictures is incredible and it's low-light capabilities are amazing. The decision to include the Carl Zeiss lens was genius.
I love the dial on the front of the camera for quick access to frequently used functions. I also love the mode dial on the top of the camera - for any regular D-SLT/SLR user, this is a must-have in order to give you the control you want.
The rear display is excellent and I like the ability to be able to tilt the flash and bounce it off of other surfaces.
The other thing that's really handy when you're travelling is that the RX-100 will charge from your USB port - very cool!
I took the photo that I've attached at about 6:30am at Heathrow airport. The light was low, and there was a real contrast between the architecture in the foreground and the windows behind but the RX-100 did a superb job. This is no ordinary 'point and shoot' camera!
Finally, although the recommended RX-100 case was incredibly difficult to get hold of, I think it's great. It's very retro, has an expensive look and feel to it, and most importantly (for me at least) is adds very little to the size of the camera so it's great for travelling.
Hope this helps.
Stuart
What's great about it: Lightweight, portal, great lens, mode dial
What's not so great: Flash can be a little harsh

Consider the Bar Raised!

I am literally rendered speechless by how amazing this camera is! It performs significantly better in many respects than my Canon 40D SLR from a couple of years ago and in a package that fits in my pocket. The image quality is outstanding, the video quality is stunning. I recently brought it to a friends wedding and the video it was taking was on par with the photographers 5D MK II ($4000 setup)...the portraits and low light images were breathtaking! I have been faithful to Canon my whole life and this is my first Sony camera purchase. Based on initial impressions and using it daily for nearly 3 weeks, I can comfortably say that this camera is the kind of thing that puts a company like Sony in the big leagues with companies like Canon and Nikon, and as is currently the case, surpasses comparable products from both companies by a significant margin! You simply can not get better pictures from anything else in a comparable size!
What's great about it: Size, Sensor, Lens, usable 3200 ISO pictures, 1080p 60fps video...EVERYTHING!!
What's not so great: Would like the Apeture to hold on to 1.8 further into the zoom range
