Our 25 year old Sunbeam stand mixer wasn't working as well as it used to, so I thought it was time to upgrade. The KitchenAid mixer is nicely built and looks good, but one of the key annoyances with stand mixers is needing to stop them and scrape down the sides while mixing. It's the reason I sought to replace our old one. It used to not be a problem with the Sunbeam, but parts wore out and it eventually became a problem as the beaters stopped reaching the side of the bowl. The KitchenAid has had this problem from the start. Frustrating doesn't begin to touch it. Sure, I can spring for even more money to get an extra attachment that will scrape down the sides, but I'd expected a brand new mixer to work better than this. Other disappointments include the flimsy, cheap plastic pouring shield. It doesn't stay in place because of the cheap materials used. And even with it on, there is little space to pour ingredients from a measuring cup. Only real option is to stop the mixer, tilt it out of the way, pour in your ingredients, then restart. Based on the marketing copy that's all supposed to be a thing of the past. It looks and feels great, but it's performance is barely average. Wish I'd sprung for new beaters on my old Sunbeam instead. Would have been cheaper and a better result.
