I was considering an Otterbox Defender or Lifeproof case, but didn't want the bulk. The Commuter isn't waterproof, but it's a good compromise. My wife has a Lifeproof case and it distorts sound while on the phone and playing music/videos.
The Otterbox Commuter is easy to install and doesn't block the thumbprint identification like my wife's Lifeproof does. An added bonus is that the Commuter case comes with screen protectors so that you don't need to buy one separately!

This was a replacement case for my wife's phone. She's had the Commuter Series before and was very happy with it. She got a new one for her iPhone 5S in Bubblegum Pink and the colors were not what we expected. Instead of a nice purple and pink it was off-pink and pink. I really don't think we were being picky, the colors seemed pretty straight-forward on the website. So, we're returning it since the real-life product was pretty ugly. Oh well. Otherwise a quality case, functionality-wise.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
