Great Sound

Although I am very happy with the sound, turning On/ Off can be a chore at times if you don't touch the power button just right.

Great Sounding Speaker

I was looking to replace a my old portable speakers, I got on of these and it works great. I use it in my bedroom and when I go outside. Easy setup with bluetooth and network.

I was always a big fan of Harman Kardon and JBL Products. I owned several versions of the go&play as well as the old JBL Radial which put out an impressive sound for its size.
As I love portable speakers and small speakers with big sound I directly bought the Onyx when it became available as it looked like a serious contender in the already crowded market with brands like Bose, Jawbone, Logitech etc.
I was sure Harman would manage a more serious sound from a small enclosure like this.
The reality is that the speaker sounds impressive, but only in a particular volume-frame. Listen to it at lower volumes (below 35%) and it sounds rather flat, not really better than my much smaller Bose Soundlink Mini. The Onyx needs volume and it starts to really sound serious up from about 50% to 70%. The bass pumps quite nicely and treble and mids are in harmony allthogether. It is only at levels above 70% where bass starts to fade and mids become a bit dominant making the speaker sound harsh with added distortion, but we are already talking about really high levels, much higher than other portable speakers are able to reach (like the Bose Soundlink, or the BIG Jambox). I am only underwhelmed by the fact, that Harman didn't manage to tune the DSP bettter for all levels. Trying to listen to the Onyx for low background music it only manages to sound like a better kitchen-radio.

I really love the design of the speaker. But it is not perfect for portable use. Despite having an internal rechargeable battery, i wouldn't like to carry the speaker around to the beach etc. The handle should have been made rotateable, so that you can rotate it flat with the spaker to make the speaker thinner for transport. But still the leather at the back and the exposed aluminium surface of the passive radiator are prone to be damaged or scratched during transport. One would need some special bag or something to better protect the speaker, a pity none is included for the given price.
Connectivity is great, i can use the speaker either in my Airplay-setup, or as DLNA-player or simply as a bluetooth speaker. No other speaker i owned so far had such a broad connectivity.
The App is nice, but it doesn't give you much more options for tuning the speaker. I hoped for an additional EQ or a loudness-setting, but you can only add a "stereo widening" feature, which doesn't harm the sound much, but doesn't really broaden it up either. The Onyx still sounds like a mono-speaker, except if listening to it really close.
All together i expected more for the given price and I am probably going to send the speaker back. The design and materials are top-quality, but i question why the back-surface had to be made of leather as normally you wouldn't notice it most of the time. The most annoying fact is that you really have to crank the speaker to get the best out of it. It is not really suitable for lower volumes. I only hope Harman takes the product serious and adds some other features (like loudness, customizable EQ etc) for future firmware updates.
