Incredibly Capable Camera

The 6D is now an aging camera that is bound to be replaced soon. That being said, the 6D represents an incredible value; it features a really high quality full-frame sensor with stellar low-light capabilities. The 6D is fantastic for landscapes and portraits but lacks the sophisticated AF system required for high-speed sports or wildlife photography. Look elsewhere for speedy action shooting (the 7D II is a great APS-C substitute).
I would recommend this to a friend!

Extremely Impressed! Great low-light photos.

I purchased the 6D to move up to Full Frame from my 7D's. Now the 7D's have served me well for many years, but I got a chance to play with the 1Dx so I knew I had to upgrade. It was a toss-up between the 6D and 5D Mark III. The 6D was readily available so I went for it based on the Wi-Fi feature. I had used the Wi-Fi transmitter with my 50D and didn't really like the speed. I thought it might be quicker. Nope. Wasn't much faster. But don't let that discourage you from this camera.
Like I said, I got a chance to play with the 1Dx. And WOW! So last night I took the 1Dx and the 6D to a football game. The 1Dx had the 300mm f/2.8L IS II and the 6D had the 70-200 2.8L IS II. Best of the best. So it was comparison time.
1Dx - Shooting at ISO 20000. Pictures were clear with very, very little noise. Beautiful. Although I was impressed with this before.
6D - Shooting at ISO 12800. All I can say is WOW again. The pictures were the same as the 1Dx. Yep. This is the best low-light camera I've run across so far. Makes my 7D look like the Rebel series. (just kidding).
So if you're looking for low-light photography and you don't have the 2nd mortgage for the 1Dx, I would highly recommend the 6D. Crisp, clear and great. Obviously the only difference would be the speed. I wish that was much faster. But overall a great choice.
The next test is studio shooting which I'm sure it will outperform anything else. And then I'm going to test the 5D Mark III.
Pros: quiet, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable

Canon 6D-One Word "WOW"
on September 1, 2013

I am floored by the performance of this camera. I purchased my 6D approx. 1 month ago, this was my upgrade from the 60D. When I went to the camera store one of the associates tried to talk me into upgrading to the new 70D. I came close to buying the 70D but opted for the 6D when it went on a very good sale. This was still considerable more than the 70D but I had always wanted to upgrade to a FF camera so I bit the bullet. You ask was the upgrade from my 60D to a 6D worth the extra cost?? ALL I CAN SAY IS WOW. I am an amateur photographer but have progressed fairly well over the years so I somewhat know a good picture from a bad one, especially when it comes to the quality of the picture i.e.: noise, sharpness, contrast etc. I retook alot of the pictures in my wife's flower garden that I had taken with my 60D. The difference in the picture quality is astounding, the 6D produces pictures that are sharp, excellent colour, and fantastic quality at high iso settings. The quality of high ISO shots are so good on the 6D I now leave the setting on auto which something I would never have done with my 60D or previous cameras. You can severely crop your pictures and have good sharp noiseless results. If there are people out there that are sitting on the fence between upgrading to a 70D or 7D save your money a little longer and go for the FF 6D. You will not be disappointed trust me. I am just your average amateur photographer who is wowed by the quality of this camera. Way to go Canon!!!
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

I have been shooting for 40 years from film to the 6D. I also have a 7D and have always been impressed with the speed and ISO performance of the 7D. Its true the 6D lacks some of the controls you might expect on a full frame but it way more than makes up for it with its low light performance. It only has 11 focus point but one of them is very good and can focus in very dim conditions. Shooting in my house at night is like having a full lighting crew with me. you have to see it to believe. Some reviewers comment on no flash on this camera but it just is not required. For airplanes flying by use the 7D but for everything else give me this big beautiful fast sensor.
Pros: quiet, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Missing features/settings

Stunning Full Frame Package
on May 29, 2015

My review of the Canon 6D. When I first considered upgrading from my Rebel T5 to a higher end professional DSLR, I vacillated between (arguably the best APS-C body) the 7D Mark II and the (‘entry level’ full frame body) 6D. I choose the 7D Mark II and had an unforgettable and amazing experience with it. However, I felt compelled by myself and others to make the jump to full frame to maximize the amount light, resolution and proper application of full frame L Lenses. Since now owning the 6D, I'm in awe at how stunning this camera is, almost regret not buying it sooner. Here are some the key reasons I purchased the 6D.
FULL FRAME
At 20.2 MP, on a full frame sensor provides some of the sharpest, crisp, and colorful images. I have not been disappointed with image quality.
HIGH ISO
The 6D allows the photographer to shoot excellent pictures in low light situations with a range from 50 (Manual ISO) or 100 to 12,800.
GPS
For me, this is necessary because I like to travel and record the locations I have been to and extract the information for later reference.
Wi-Fi
I may not use it that much, but having the ability to tether the photos recently taken on the fly and connect to a smart phone using a separate Wi-Fi connection and the EOS Remote App does take digital photography to a whole new level. It is extremely impressive! This will be a new standard for the industry in the future, you can count on that.
SILENT MODE
Not all DSLRs have this feature, and it very important to me for many of the situations I am in that requires reducing shutter noise.
The 6D has all the right stuff and I would highly suggest aspiring photographers who are looking to go full frame consider this model. Canon designed the 6D with a high level of care, excellent build quality and very enjoyable functionality.
Thank you for reading!

Luvin' my Canon 6D - Here's Why...
on June 17, 2013

from La Quinta, CA
Much has been written editorially and by end-users about the Canon 6D, so I will highlight only items which are most relevant to my experience thus far.
Canon 6D lay-out - As a creature of habit, initially I was a bit dismayed with the feature lay-out of the Canon 6D. This is in comparison to my Canon 50D which I have owned for several years. After a couple of sessions, I have come to really enjoy the well thought out lay-out of this camera. First, the "Off/On" switch is located top left below the Mode Dial. Second, the Mode Dial has a lock button to prevent inadvertent changes. Third, I really like how the Quick Control & Multi-controller dials have evolved into a single dial. Fourth, the Back Focus button (AF-ON) is located in a very accessible spot - on the 50D, I constantly fumble to locate it without looking. Finally, I also like the location of the Live View access button - much more intuitive than the 50D.
After several months of field use, I have completely bought into the intuitive lay-out of the 6D. Besides to usual AF/Drive/ISO/Metering buttons on the top right of the camera, the consolidation of the Quick Control dial, the Multi-controller & Set button is well thought out, easy-to-access and intuitive. I like this set-up much better than the separate joy-stick/multi-controller found on my 50D. To access the shooting functions, all I have to do is push the "Q" button and navigate with the Quick Control/Multi-controller/Set button. Easy peazy.
Full Frame - My other DSLR is a Canon 50D. This camera uses what is commonly referred to as a "crop sensor". When I first got the 50D, I was thrown off by the change in perspective compared to my Canon SLR film camera. That said, I am so happy to be shooting Full Frame again! I won't get into all of the technical reasons why Full Frame over APS-C/Crop Sensor except to say, I am thrilled with the light gathering capability of the 6D. I can shoot at lower iso's thus reducing any image noise potential. 6D - 20.2mp/50D - 15.1mp. Fyi, my primary lens are: 24-70mm f/2.8L USM & 70-200mm f/4.0L IS USM.
Shutter - Even in standard mode, the shutter on the Canon 6D is noticeably quiet.
Editorials and end-users have commented on continuous shooting speed. I'll just say 4.5fps will not set the world on fire by today's standards. It is plenty fast so long as I am not shooting action sports/scenes. My 50D shoots @ 6.3fps which will be well suited for action shots.
Continuous shooting mode - I have started to shoot in continuous mode especially when bracketing my shots. Note: I also shoot in RAW. I haven't really noticed any significant buffer lag while shooting in continuous mode. Generally, I will shoot in bursts of three shots, pause, and shoot in another burst. 4.5 fps seems to meet my needs well.
AF Points - I generally use center auto focus point. Having a gazillion auto focus points is not a priority nor a requirement for my needs.
Ai Servo - When I am not using manual focus, I am using Ai Servo. Works very well as expected especially with continuous shooting mode.
Image noise - Although, I haven't really pushed the camera to high ISO range, shots in standard ISO range from 100 to 800 have exhibited no noise to speak of.
Picture Styles - I really like this Canon feature. In a nutshell, you can select a Picture Style like Standard, Neutral, Faithful, Landscape, Portrait & Monochrome. The camera processor will render the image based on the style selected. In addition, when you use Canon's Digital Photo Professional (DPP) software, you can additional styles to DPP's library.
Remote - On tripod shots, I use a Canon RS-80N3 wired shutter remote. You may ask why I wouldn't use the wireless remote feature... well, the wireless remote sensor is located on the front of the camera on the camera grip. This means the wireless remote needs to be in line of sight with sensor to operate reliably. This is fine if you are taking a picture of yourself or yourself in a group.
Media card - The 6D uses an SD card. And there is only one slot. Some cameras now have multiple slots and can use both Compact Flash & SD. This is not a priority nor a requirement for my shooting needs.
Battery - Since I am not using the GPS & WiFi technology features, I find battery discharge rates to be acceptable. I shoot in "Live Mode", use continuous shooting mode, review images when shot, review histograms - all the features which can drain a battery. I haven't run into any issues even on longer shoots. I am purchasing at least one additional battery for back-up(s).
New technology | WiFi & GPS - Presently, I do not use the WiFi feature. Since I usually shoot on the fly and like to pack light, I do not carry a laptop/iPad. At some point, I will explore integrating WiFi into my routine. GPS is a real cool feature for geo-tagging. Call me old fashion/old school... I have no compelling reason to geo-tag at this time. Like WiFi, I will explore later and perhaps use. That said, these two features are battery power guzzlers. So the upside for me is my battery(s) will last longer in the field.
Build - I am liking the build and feel of the 6D. It fits my hand very well. Solid feel. The body is textured in all the right places.
Flash - No built in flash. No biggie here as I prefer using external light sources.
Conclusion - Overall, I am thrilled to have this camera in my bag. It has performed (thus far) to expectations. When my skills grow and expand, I will consider a 5D. In the meantime, I look fwd to viewing my new photos after a shoot and determine if any are worthy of those slick photo gifts (canvas prints, glass prints, metal sublimation prints) for family & friends! Ps: still using the 50D for action stuff and where a little more shutter speed & a little more reach is needed. Happy shooting!
Pros: quiet, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, full-frame

Canon 6D 6 months in
on July 26, 2015

I purchased the 6D for my wife for Christmas. I have a 5Dmk3 to compare. The image quality is remarkable. Low-light is possibly a touch better than the 5Dmk3. The focus system is very good and for stills and most shots as good as the 5Dmk3, which holds the advantage on sports/action shots.
The primary drawback is that the build quality is slightly less. It is much lighter (advantage) and has less metal underneath the skin (disadvantage). Like many other 6D owners, we have lost the cover to the mode dial, but haven't yet lost the Quick Control Dial that others have.. I understand these are easily replaceable, but come on Canon!
We have made some use of the wireless capabilities although they are a bit difficult to setup and use (I am an IT person and still struggle a bit getting things to work reliably).
If you are looking for a full frame camera at a great price point with excellent picture quality and a few extra bells and whistles, and don't tmind losing a few button covers, I can recommend the 6D.

This camera is phenomenal.
-Image quality is fantastic
-The LCD screen displays images better than my iPhone 5!
-The camera's ability to focus in low light is amazing
-The wifi feature is incredibly convenient and easy
-When I shoot portraits, the wifi capability allows me to have my subjects immediately view their images directly on to the large screen of an iPad. They love that!
-The full frame sensor and Digic 5+ processor is great at significantly reducing noise at high iso's and within shadows of long exposures
-Not much of a video guy, but video quality is superb
I upgraded from the 50d and would highly recommend this camera to anyone upgrading from a cropped sensor body
Pros: good battery life, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable
I would recommend this to a friend!
