Best camera I've ever owned.

After 10 months and 6,800+ exposures, I've come to know the camera a bit.
What I like: In "S" mode, it's quieter than the Leica M3 it replaced. This really helps when photographing camera shy people.
Image stabilization allows me to squeeze off exposures of up to a second with acceptable results, provided the subject does not move.
The 24-105 f/4 L lens is lovely. I never though I could live without f/1.4, but the sensor on the 6D is so good I can get away with shooting at ISO 1600 with almost no "grain". The lens itself is sharp, with nice bokeh. It's range (I find it shoot it at 24 and 105 about 50% of the time) is perfect for a "walk around" lens. While prime lenses are sharper, in practice, the hand held difference is negligible. Not having to change lenses during a shoot is a big plus.
I set the focuser to use the center sensor only. The camera focuses accurately (*almost* as good as the M3). Reframing after focus is almost automatic for me after decades of Leica use.
The camera does not have a built in flash. This is good. On camera flash almost always makes for lousy portraits. Instead I use the Canon 430EXII in bounce mode, which creates nicely lit shots.
What could be better: The software that came with the camera only works on Windows and Macs. I use Linux almost exclusively, so I have extra work to port the images over to my Linux box.
The EOS Utility downloading software often hangs and displays "Busy". When this happens, the photos don't download at all. I need to reboot the computer and camera. Big hassle. Sometimes even this doesn't work, and I need to borrow my wife's chip reader to do my download to her apple.
The instructions to the Canon photo editing software make it vague to the point of unusability. "Darkroom" and "Gwen view" to the rescue! I also use software I've developed that utilizes imagemagik to bulk process photos. If the Canon software does this, I haven't figured it out yet.
Some of the features of the camera are complex. One needs to read the 600+ page manual a few times to start to figure out how to use it. The leica had only 5 controls, but I'll never use all the controls built into this camera.

I've owned the T3i, 60D and 6D. Have been able to sell the first two at reasonable prices to upgrade to the next. Each time the quality of the photos has improved. Hopefully I've learned some tricks as well as improvements in the cameras. The 6D has all the latest features that I wanted. i.e. WiFi, GPS, full frame, etc. I think I've found the best camera for me.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
I would recommend this to a friend!

Exactly What I'd Hoped For

I'm a hobbyist photographer and I primarily shoot landscape/nature photos. I've been a happy EOS 40D shooter for the last six years. While the 40D was, and still is, a great camera, it does have some limitations in both low light and in high contrast lighting situations. I had been interested in making the jump to a full frame camera for a while, but I couldn't justify the expense of a 5DIII, nor did I need all of the features that it offers. Enter the 6D.
The 6D is a great value and a pleasure to shoot. I use the camera for still photography and its image quality is superb. The 6D's high ISO performance and dynamic range allow me to capture images that I could only dream of getting with the 40D. I was initially a little concerned about the 6D's polycarbonate body components. However, after shooting with it,I can say that it feels every bit as sturdy as the 40D and it's lighter to boot. I don't use the GPS function, so my battery life has been good so far. My only quibble with the camera is that I prefer the 40D's rear joystick to the 6D's directional wheel.
Overall, I would recommend the 6D to anyone looking to upgrade to full frame from a crop sensor camera who doesn't necessarily need all of the 5DIII's bells and whistles. It's a great camera.

Got the 6d with the EF 24-105 lens, and so far it's amazing. Wifi set up was simple, and the photos so far are fantastic. Easy to shoot indoor snapshots of family events. Used the iPhone link for a remote shutter to take family group shots and it worked perfectly.

Photography has been a hobby of mine for over 30 years. Most of my experience is with 35mms but over the past 10 years it’s been digital. My experience with Canon’s digital EOS cameras are with the Rebel XS, 20D, 60D and 6D. The 6D is a good camera. I’ve used it for plenty different shots and the only thing about this camera I wish it had was the articulating LCD. For the money you spend on this [full frame camera], to me it’s worth every penny. If you don’t care about the sensor size I’d stay with the 60D or 70D which are also nice cameras. My advice to those with average camera experience, get a decent camera but get a good lens.

This camera takes amazing pictures with depth, detail, true to life colors, and above normal high ISO handling. I thought the built in GPS would not be too useful, however I find myself using it to figure out elevation changes during our hikes.
The downside to the camera is the focusing system. They should have used the 7D's system. Clearly it is a marketing move to keep a separation between it and the 5D III.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, built-in gps, built-in wifi
Cons: Missing features/settings, skimpy focusing system, should have dual button functions
I would recommend this to a friend!
