I love this movie, so when I saw it on Blue Ray having just purchased a new 60" Samsung TV I had to. See it on my new big TV. Man, it was impeesive! Plus I had a couple friends over, they thought it was great too! Its a worthy movie to enjoy and discuss the really impressive cinematography and the beauty and character development. See it and stay with it as it has a twist you will be schocked . I woukd give it 4.5 of 5.

First of all, I recommend this movie along with the top of a short list of personal favorites, which is why I purchased this along with my first 20 or so Blu-Rays since upgrading my home theater package. That being said, this is the first Blu-Ray I have not been satisfied with, especially since I paid good money for the metal box edition.
The positives: It is a beautiful heartfelt production, with a class act score that includes the international elite violinist Itzhak Perlman.
The negatives: The video is no better than DVD. I am a late comer to the Blu-Ray hype, and this does not cut it. The audio, DTS Master, is no better than a standard Dolby Digital DVD. It lacks all the extra clarity and definition that modern high-def audio offers. The percussive sound track and sword play do not pop and sparkle like I assumed they would. Worse yet, THERE IS NO OPTION FOR DTS MASTER AUDIO IN THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGE, only with English dub over, and try as they might, the ambiance does not match convincingly. The original language in Dolby Digital sounds better than the dub over in DTS MA because of this.
If you know and love the movie, save yourself a buck and get the DVD, but I do sincerely recommend doing at least that. They made no effort whatsoever to remaster this unto the Blu-Ray expectation.
What's great about it: a GREAT movie
What's not so great: lack of modern High-Def quality audio and video

Hero is a 2002 epic wuxia film directed by Zhang Yimou, who also directed House of Flying Daggers and Curse of the Golden Flower, in 2004 and 2006 respectively. Zhang is also the mastermind behind the extravagant opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics in 2008. The martial arts choreography in Hero has since influenced many of the action sequence in contemporary western action film making. I purchased this steelbook release on sale for $9.99 even I already own other released versions of this film. The only downside to this steelbook version is it only has the international release of the film (shorter version) and very limited special features. It would be perfect if it also contains the original Chinese release version (extended with more than 30 min.) and more extras about the film.

Movie is superb but disappointing transfer to blue ray. I owned the DVD for years and was excited to see it in 1080P but not much improvement. Got it for 10 bucks which is just about worth it for the metal case.

What's great about it: One of my top five favorite movies.
