I have read almost all the reviews and The people reporting slow, I ask, is 20 seconds for a 4x6, ( I get excellent prints onphoto paper, in about 27 seconds)to slow? Difficult setup? Did you use the install disk or just blunder around? Quality, at hi resoultion (9600dpi) I will put this printer againts ANY printer, AND Win! Draft mode use grey scale, noisey, turn on quiet mode. People, you have to read the manual. Really! As for wireless, the setup is automatic for the printer. Sending from android devices need a driver to send to printer, Canon supplies on the CD. I have two of these printers, we do layouts for magazine ads. Always work and the quality gets us paid (5 figures) . If you folks don't know what to do, most of us prefer you ask for the answer before you slam a product. At least be fair! Did you know the printer will even print a booklet, with all the pages in correct order, by itself? Bet not! You need to read the book that you didn't read.
Pros: reliable, Compact Design, Easy Setup, durable, Low Ink Consumption, Lightweight/Portable, Sharp Tones & Colors, fast print speed, easy to use

Don't let the bad reviews scare you off!

The negative reviews here were so scary I nearly returned my printer without even trying it out. Canon techsupport helped with the install (which it turns out was very easy) As for slow printing... The printer does NOT take forever to warm up as so many have complained. Canon tech support said he thought those problems resulted from computers and/or printers with poor wireless communication with the router. My computer has a wired connection to my router -- the printer is connected wirelessly one room away. When I make a print request the printer begins printing immediately. The print output isn't breaking any records but it isn't unbearably slow either. It's "normal" inkjet speed. Big photos at best quality take a minute. B and white text prints fast. The printer responds to my computer (PC) and my wife's (Apple) which I expected to be a bit of a hassle and wasn't.
I haven't owned the machine long enough to say I _know_ it is a great product (hence the 4's not 5s in my ratings) but it definitely isn't the "stay away from this piece of garbage" lemon some other reviewers have suggested. At the moment it seems like a perfectly acceptable inkjet printer. Can't comment on ink usage etc., yet. I'll agree with the critics that it does seem sort of flimsy and lightweight in construction. It feels/looks lighter and cheaper than my old canon printer (Pixma 620) -- well, it is cheaper than that printer! Time will tell if this one actually is reliable or not. It prints photos very crisply with accurate color which is my primary requirement.
Pros: Sharp Tones & Colors
Cons: Flimsy Construction

Top of the line

In less than a year, I went through two major brand printers. Both were examples of less than sterling quality! One would not print anything less than 8x10 photos, and the other would jam frequently and have the queue just stop. In researching this printer, I took into account the start-up time and the page set-up. This printer gives me the control I want before printing. Yes, this machine is on the noisy side, but it works flawlessly. Noise can be dealt with, breakdowns cannot. In the 6 weeks I have owned the MG5420, I have printed over 150 pictures and countless documents, letter and legal. Not one glitch. The pictures are crystal clear and the documents are dynamic. This is the best printer I have owned in 10 years. My other printers were like cinder blocks compared to this. Best printer for the money.
Pros: reliable, Compact Design, Easy Setup, durable, Low Ink Consumption, Sharp Tones & Colors, fast print speed, easy to use, user controllable
Cons: none so far!

Better than expected/all that I hoped

I didn’t read these reviews until I’d already purchased the printer and then was seriously about to return it unopened. I picked it up on a great sale with no research, because I love Canon and we wanted a Wi-Fi printer, but I never set it up. Finally I needed to print some DVDs in a pinch, so out of the box it came. It works great and prints beautifully! Whew. We are a multi-computer household (Macs and a PC), and we can now print wirelessly from all over the house. Yes, the set-up was a bit tedious and not super intuitive (I gave myself a couple hours, and needed most of it). Yes, if it’s been in “sleep” mode for a while and you try to print from across the house it’ll take a little longer (<2 minutes). No, I’ve had NO issues with it forgetting the network. Yes, printing the DVDs was tedious (I would normally let my husband do this but I could tell he would have been way too frustrated, so I took it on and patiently followed all the instructions in the user manual I downloaded as part of the set-up. I’m instruction-driven, and needed every single page to figure out how to do it. Once I got the first one printed I was able to print 3 more of the same, easily. But I’ll probably never remember how to do it without the manual!)
SCANNING - this can only be done with a USB connection or SD Memory Card (not wirelessly), so that’s inconvenient but we don’t scan that often. Also the scanned file size is kinda large and there are no options to reduce size.
COPYING – fast enough for just the few copies we would ever need to do (one page at a time)
SOUND – this printer does not seem loud at all (it sits about 6 feet from me)
Moving Parts – on the one hand it’s solid; on the other hand the paper and DVD trays seem prone to having problems if they’re man-handled.
INK - Can’t speak to ink use yet because it’s only been operating about a week. (We’re trying to use draft mode.) I can say full color photo printing looks crisp and with accurate colors.
This is my third Canon (the other two are still running fine, but we needed a Wi-Fi printer). I’m still a Canon fan, and am crossing my fingers that this printer continues to be nothing like the hassles I read about here.
Pros: Sharp Tones & Colors
Cons: Difficult Setup

I'm happy with it so far. I had a little trouble figuring out some of the features and understanding the software features but after a quick call to Canon support, I am up and running.
* Print quality is better than I expected!
* Scans quicker than I thought (based off others reviews, I thought it would be horrible).
Note it scans very quickly and efficiently IF you scan via "IJ Scan Utility" (found in ALL PROGRAMS). I was very frustrated trying to use the Canon Quick Menu to scan so I cannot recommend that software so far.
*I really like that it will be easy to keep clean (unlike all the competitors devices). The device has all the parts tucked away and easy to pull out when in use!
I would recommend to someone for average personal use.
Pros: Compact Design, Easy Setup, Sharp Tones & Colors, easy to keep clean
Cons: software is a little frustrating

EXCRUCIATING INK COST!

If it were not for the excessive ink costs this would be a GREAT little all-in-one printer. My last 5 printers were all great Canon Printers that all used separate ink cartridges but this one will send you into bankruptcy. I've replaced all the cartridges faster than I ever did with any other printer.
Other than that, wireless setup was easy and great. Quality is nice. I usually don't go for all in ones but this one works well with Photoshop. My only complaint is that I may need a mortgage to pay for the ink.
Pros: all the great qualities pale with ink cost!
Cons: ink cost way too high!, again = it burns through ink and costs are high
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Best Printer Purchase

More than satisfied with this printer!
It prints, scan, and copies beautifully. I went through 4 printers before stopping at this one as Canon got it right. It is nice to know that Canon still believes it making a good quality product. Photos are amazing and look better than the ones I use to send off for not to mention I have them instantly. Also, airprint is the best thing ever as now I can print straight from my iphone. I cannot tell you how nice it is not to have to email pictures off of my phone to then have to download to my lap top just to print.
I wish I would of found this printer a long time ago!
By the way, Canon printers come with a FULL set of ink!
Pros: reliable, Compact Design, Easy Setup, durable, Low Ink Consumption, Sharp Tones & Colors, fast print speed, easy to use, comes with full set of ink

Absolute garbage

I've had this for close to two years, and for that entire time I have fought with this machine. It never recognizes that there's paper, requiring you to constantly remove and reinsert the tray until it decides you've been frustrated enough. It also takes no less than 5 minutes for it to actually start printing a document once you've clicked print. You hear a series of mechanical movements within the machine, but nothing happens. Just gears, levers, and arms moving back and forth for a while. If you're lucky you will only have to do this 3 or 4 times until it actually prints your document. Good luck to you if you try to print something in color or you might as well open a bottle of wine while this hunk of plastic thinks about whether or not you really need that paper. Canon, you made a real piece of junk here. This thing is going to get the office space treatment.
