This is my 2nd Sony BR. Nothing but problems. First it takes several minutes to connect Wi-Fi. Than in middle of watching a movie it freezes, can't shut it off. Have to pull power plug. Than try it again. This happens 50% of the time.

Not pleased that I have to unplug/replug the device for it to have continuous play. Has steadily gotten worse with time. It will either start stuttering whatever show I’m watching, or will freeze up entirely and the only way for it to stop is if I disconnect and then reconnect. So irritating and unnecessary aggravation.

Constantly requires restarting

We've had this DVD player for a while and it constantly requires restarting, as in multiple times a day. It doesn't matter if we're streaming, or playing DVD/Bluray videos.

Received as a gift Christmas 2017. Now after 15 months cannot connect to apps and can not even open the set-up mode to reset. Bummer. Never had any electronic unit that lasted such a short time.

I picked this up to go with my future purchase of a 4k tv. I'm glad I did. It really works well and it loads really fast. The picture and sound are good as well. And I got it at a good price.

Mysterious shutdown.
on December 27, 2014
Posted by: Mickeymouse
The unit works functionally well until the power shuts down mysteriously. Then it become impossible to power up unless you unplug the whole unit for a few seconds and then press the power button. In the less than 4 months period of use, this happened more than ten times. Sony support tried to help but so it has been unsuccessful.
I bought the BDPS6500 for an unusual reason. I have been searching for a set-top device that will provide a robust execution of the Digital Concert Hall (Berlin Philharmoniker) app. I have been using an LG BD220 player, which streams live and archival concerts very well, but the unit was extremely slow and laggy to navigate. Other devices, including the Nexus Player and Sony NSZ-GS8 fell short of my expectations. I selected the 6500 over the other versions with the hope that its dual processor stood the best hope that it could provide robust streaming and fast responsiveness. Also, Sony provides all of the audio/video networking equipment used by the Berlin Phil for DCH, so I figured they are most likely to be able to provide the robust performance I was seeking.
I am delighted that after streaming extensively over the last several weeks, the new player has performed beautifully, with absolutely no anomalies during many, many hours of streaming archival concerts. Streaming of Live concerts, which are coded quite differently than archived concerts, has been very good as well. We watched the final season live concert yesterday, so we have now accumulated about 8 hours of flawless live concert streaming, and we have had not any issues with a ton of archival concert streaming.
Setup was very easy. I'm using an ethernet connection, and I haven't tried the WiFi connection at all. I was able to run the first firmware update via ethernet with no problems. We have also set up and used Amazon Instant Video, Netflix, YouTube and Pandora with no problems. The Amazon Instant Video app does include a selection for Recently Watched, which the apps on my other devices lacked. That is a great improvement, now that we are able to resume watching partially watched programming without digging around.
Operation is extremely fast, especially compared to the older LG unit. I opted to use Quick Start, which presents the Home screen almost instantaneously, which is a kick. I know it will use a bit more electricity, and I may change that in the future, but I really like the speedy startup. The remote is quite small, about 5 1/8" x 1 3/4" x 3/4", and nicely laid out. The Netflix, and Favorite buttons are very convenient. I set up the DCH app for our Favorite, since we watch it so much, and the convenience and speed of starting the app is quite stunning. I can easily reassign the Favorite app anytime, I doubt that we will ever stop using Netflix, so I don't see that selection becoming obsolete anytime soon. I noted that for most of the apps that I use, the apps tend to utilize the main function keys, which makes operation quite convenient. The Home screen shows the main selected apps, and My Apps, and navigation around the screen is very quick.
I can't speak for the streaming capabilities of the other models, but I can happily proclaim that streaming on the 6500 is exemplary, and the unit has met all of my expectations for performance and UI responsiveness.
I will continue to use my Nexus Player, for the Google infrastructure apps, especially Play Movies and Play Music, but I was finally able to retire my old Sony Google TV, and the LG BluRay player
Physically, the unit is very small compared to the LG, and mostly plastic, with no indicators except for a small green LED to indicate power on. That is all fine with me. Having the power supply in the power connector isn't my favorite, as it can complicate plug placement, especially on a power strip or UPS, but I can live with that minor negative.
We don't own a 3D or 4K TV or a Sony Playstation yet, so I haven't tested those functions, but we are ready for them in the future. BluRay disk performance is fine, as expected. Picture and Audio quality was as crisp and clear as I can ask for 1080P material. All in all, I'm quite satisfied that, at least initially, the 6500 has met all of my expectations, and I would definitely recommend it, especially for anyone using the DCH app.
