Been tired of the same mess coming out of Hollywood for a while, and this performance made a great difference. It was very exciting, and great all around!

This is just a very good low budget film that tries to get the point across that no one is all good and no one is all bad. And it does that well and cleverly. Sure, it is Hollywood in that the number of coincidences is not that likley and the multiple parallel stories prevents a lot of character development, but it is still great.
Its biggest problem is not in the movie itself, but in all the resentment it got because it won the Academy Awards that some people with a political agenda thought were basically owed to Brokeback Mountain, a far worse movie.
What's great about it: Fresh in that it shows no one is 100% good or 100% bad.
What's not so great: Drew a lot of fire from the people who wanted Brokeback Mountain to win AA for political reasons.

This movie is one of the best overall movies I have ever seen. Not only is the movie entertaining, but it searches into social aspects of life. It delves into racial stereotypes, social class issues, and problems with the American society in general. The acting is great and the plot is even better. Each part of the movie has a new twist that keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering why this happened and what will happen next.
What's great about it: Everything
What's not so great: None

Crash unfairly received the Best Picture Academy Award in 2005. In my opinion, it was actually the weakest of the films that were nominated, but the greatest injustice was the defeat of Ang Lee's controversial cowboy forbidden love story "Brokeback Mountain". Crash's win seems like an excuse to avoid giving the Oscar to the movie about the cowboy love story by instead giving it to the film about racism. It's just a cop-out in my view.
In any case, Crash still has some things going for it, and those things that work in the film work very well. Paul Haggis is a very gifted director, and his work here is quite noteworthy. The film looks great, and there is a gritty yet lyrical quality to the look of it.
The acting is fantastic. The cast is about as A-List as an ensemble piece like this can get. Their participation (from Don Cheadle to Brendan Fraser) made the msking of this film possible, and it still took about two years to get made. It must be noted that this was a passion project for Haggis, which is obvious when one is viewing the film. I will not mention the acting, which is uniformly brilliant, save for one exception. The actor who gathered the most praise for this film is Matt Dillon, who plays a racist white cop. His father is struggling with urinary infections, and thus Dillon's character is shown both sympathetically in his struggles to help his father cope and negatively when he harrasses Terence Howard and Thandie Newton after pulling them over, and even molests Newton. The most incredulous part of the plot comes when less than two days after Dillon molested Newton, he must rescue her from her overturned vehicle before the leaking gas catches fire and blows up the car with her in it. It's a very powerful scene, but also somewhat ridiculous in its coincidence.
The connections that are developped between all of the characters in the film take away some of its credibility storywise. However, the acting and direction are so good it's hard not to forgive these issues. Crash is a worthy film, though it tends to be overrated. However, since most people tend to really like it, you probably will too.
What's great about it: Great acting and direction
What's not so great: The plot relies far too heavily on coincidence to create connections between all of the characters

a movie that really makes one think about race relations from all sides. I could watch this movie over and over and still cry when the shop owner fires his gun and thinks he killed the little girl.

The movie was great; many other reviews will tell you that. Why 2 stars? Because of the Blu Ray features. Zero! None! Say what?
This Blu Ray actually has absolutely NO bonus features. They couldn't even put the commentary on it??? I don't consider audio selections and subtitles to be bonus features. My Crash DVD includes: Audio Commentary, DVD Intro, Behind the Scenes, Storyboard Compares, Script to Screen Compares, Music Montage, Photo Gallery.
This review gives 5 stars to the movie and 0 stars to the disc, and thus 2 stars for the final product (a split down the middle; and you cannot give half stars; but it deserves to be rounded down and not up).
Yes, to recommend to a friend if they only want the movie.
No, to recommend to a friend if they like extras; in this case find the DVD version.
Peace.

This is what happens when someone who doesn't understand subtlety tries to handle a subject like poor race relations. Every character in this movie, save for Ryan Phillipe early in the movie is just a terrible human being to every other character. Yes, you've figured out that racists cause problems, WHAT A SHOCKER! The reactions of the people in the film to other characters are completely unrealistic and caused me to constantly be reminded that I am watching a film about people who are trying to prove a point than actually being absorbed in the movie. Everything in this movie could have been avoided had people simply acted like normal, decent human beings. This movie makes me angry that it won awards with such a terrible story.
What's great about it: Solid acting
What's not so great: Style and emotion without substance.

From the start the film forces it's agenda down viewers throats. This continues through endless unrealistic scenes of exaggerated racism. You leave the film feeling ill - not because of a revelation about society, but out of disappointment that so many people are gullible enough to fall for this garbage.
