The HP inkjet cartridges we have purchased have consistently provided fewer printed pages than advertised. They seem to be "empty" before they really are out of ink. They also seem to "clog" and stop printing altogether if not used every few weeks. Only rarely will the "clean" routine unclog the print head. [Some other brands seem to be OK even after being idle for six or more months.]

The inkjet cartridges are sensitive. There are a few ideas that may help the clogs. I'm very sorry you had this experience. Instead of using
automatic cleaning, you could try to clean the printheads manually. A damp cloth cleans the copper contacts well. If you are getting fewer pages than advertised, consider the items you are printing. Photos, invites, posters, tables, and graphics deplete the cartridges more than other types of printing.
