My First 24 hours with the Samsung Gear Live and S5

I've anticipated the arrival of Android Wear devices in my area for some time.
I've had my SGL (Samsung Gear Live) for about 24 hours now and I must say, I'm very impressed. My choice of the SGL was based on the heart rate monitor and sensors that allow the SGL to function as a fitness tracker, sleep monitor, pedometer etc ... I wanted more then some flimsy wrist band that has limited functionality. At the very least I wanted to be able to do the fitness tracking, notifications from the phone and start calls from my watch.
Once un-boxed and started the first words out of my mouth were, "Oh wow! That's cool!" and I've found myself saying that over and over for the last 24 hours. I wasn't even three feet outside the store and I had my SGL connected to my S5. The paring process was quick, painless and over before I knew it. Then I saw the wrist strap.
My first disappointment with the SGL, the wrist strap and clasp. The clasp isn't really a clasp it's a bit of metal with two prongs that stab into holes on the other strap. At first I worried about how secure the connection would be. Then I realized that the design works well with the heart rate monitor on the back of the watch and the band held firm while sleeping and work.
The voice recognition is quite good. In the days before Dragon Naturally Speaking voice recognition was a matter of training, call and response stuff. Today's voice recognition is so good that they use it to replace phone operators, the SGL's voice recognition is better. Just be sure to keep speaking with rapidity. If you pause the SGL will notice and it will send your message before you're done speaking. Nice if you're sending one or two words, not so hot for a grocery list.
Initially I was surprised that there were so few apps on the SGL. Then I discovered the app store, and a whole new world opened up to me. From the cool factor of the remote camera viewfinder to the usefulness of the voice commands. And it's all on Android a wonderfully open system that I could develop apps for if I desired to do so.
I'm still getting used to the swiping interface and learning the proper use of the SGL. Overall I'd have to say that the SGL is worth every penny I paid.
Pros: Lightweight, it's shiny and new!
Cons: it's shiny and beta!
I would recommend this to a friend!

After 4.4 update

When I first received the Gear Live, it took quite a while to figure out all of the functionality as a new user, but at least I did my research first and knew a lot of the limitations that other reviewers have knocked the watch on, such as not having a speaker. I bought the Gear Live for 2 reasons:
I work in an environment which makes taking my phone out of my pocket impossible to check text messages and emails, and I had missed many important messages from my wife and boss until I had a chance to check my phone. The Gear Live has completely filled that role, as a quick glance at my watch tells me whether it is something that I need to access now, or it can wait. What I didn't like initially is that you could not hide the notifications temporarily, you either had to dismiss them or put up with them on the screen. I am extremely happy that the newest update has fixed that issue and you can temporarily hide notifications by swiping down and recall them by swiping up. This fixed one of the main issues that I had.
I wanted something to use in the gym and while running to listen to music and track my heart rate. This was the largest disappointment that I had with the watch initially because I still had to carry my phone while running in order to have access to my music. Thankfully in the newest update, they have allowed us to load music directly on the watch and pair the watch to bluetooth headphones, so that issue has been corrected and I'm very happy with it. I wish it had GPS built into the watch, but again, I knew it didn't when I purchased it. The heart rate sensor is really my only heartburn, as it is virtually useless unless you are standing perfectly still which makes doing interval training based on training heart rate impossible. Still, not a deal breaker for me, the other functionality makes up for this limitation.
Pros: Bright display, now allows music storage directly, notifications
Cons: have to charge it every night, screen is not visible in direct sunlight, charging cradle

Large display and crystal clear

Just got this a day or so ago and it is a little large for me, but I'm sure I'll get used to it over time. I'd like to be able to get a different strap, a regular one rather than the weard 2 pins that need to fit into a little hole as I'm concerned that over time this will loosen up and I'll drop the watch.
The plastic charger is a little strange and hokey and can use some improvement.
Now, the display is great. I can see who calls when a call comes in, picture and all. Just like on my HTC phone. I can even reject the call from my watch. Great to see the alerts also. I think for the price this is a great addition to my phone.
Pros: Bright display
Cons: Too big

Best Android Wear, except
on May 21, 2015
Posted by: Barry1960
I think this is by far the best looking Android Wear watch with the best combination of features However there are two flaws, one fatal, and one not so bad. The snap on charger nonsense is an absolute killer and would prevent me from ever recommending this watch or buying another. The charger needs to be wireless – a micro USB connector is acceptable, but it probably could not be made water resistant. The battery life needs to be improved.
Pros: aesthetic
Cons: nonsense charger
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
