"You get what you pay for"

The saying "you get what you pay for" is true in this case, but in a good way. Rather fast AF, I blew an image up to 20x30 shot with a Rebel XT, and it barely lost any quality. The only problem is that if you break it... You're out a good sum of money.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, great quality for the money

Overall excellent - but bad ghosts at night
on October 16, 2016

Outstanding performance in well-lit situations. However not good for taking photos of the moon, sunsets with bright clouds, or night shots with bright lights. In these cases it produces a very obvious ghost image for each light source.
Many of the online reviews either don't mention this ghost problem, or brush over it as inconsequential. I think it spoils night photograph in a major way. Unfortunately the ghost does not appear in the viewfinder, so one cannot compose the picture to reduce the effect. Instead one has to view the image after shooting to see how bad the ghost may be, then try another shot to move the ghost to a less critical position. Then afterwards crop the image to cut out the ghost. This is not what I expected from this lens.
So I think this is a great lens, but not for high contrast situations.

My first L lens!!!!!
on October 1, 2013

So this is my first L lens and I'm extremely satisfied with it. The quality of my shots blew me away. Perfect focus. Extremely crisp. The only complaint I have is that it is HEAVY! My wrist hurts from supporting the lens. Another thing is that people stare at it. A lot
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images
Cons: heavy, attracts unwanted attention

Great Lens

You can see the difference as soon as you put his lens on your camera. Everything is better. If you get one start saving for the next because you'll now be hooked on the "L"'s. Great for portraits or just about anything. Can't get the wife to take it off the camera, she thinks it was an original accessory and it has to stay on it. A major reason for lens envey from your peers and much lighter than the faster version.
Pros: Superior build quality, Super-sharp images

Over Priced

I sold mine and bought EF 200mm f2.8 prime. It was too heavy for me to carry around. Normally needs a tripod when you shoot at 200mm. That's the same as the prime but the prime is much lighter. IQ is excellent. As far as sharpness you might get almost same result with 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS, but this one has very nice bokeh. AF is fast and quiet. L quality built. But if you can find a good used IS version for a similar price, you might want that instead of this.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, sharp images, excellent image quality with nice bokeh
Cons: expensive, heavy

Disappointed
on October 16, 2010

Considering the amount of money this lens cost, I was surprisingly disappointed with the quality of image it produces. When you expand your image to 100%, details are blurry.
There are exceptions. Shooting portraits at a distance of 15-25 feet produces great results. Shoot a bird 50 feet away, it's blurry every time. I've tried using a tripod, different camera body, same results.
Other than that, I think it's a super lens. But if you can't get a quality image from it, what good is it. I also have used a 70-300mm f4.5 - 5.6 canon lens. The inexpensive version and the quality isn't far off from that.
I'm really really hoping it may just need an adjustment. In fact, I'm praying an adjustment corrects the problem, otherwise the purchase was a total bust.
I wish I had taken it back right after I purchased it, but I wanted to believe.
Pros: f2.8, durable (i think), it focuses fast
Cons: lack of sharp image
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
