Okay so it is a bit more linear than previous FFs, but I don't mind because I love the story. I have not yet finished the game, but I am very pleased with it.
The fighting style reverts back to earlier styles, but remains active and only one character is controlled. Reminds me a bit of Chrono Cross, and some others, but adding the good parts of FF12. I like it better than FF12, personally.
The music is much different than traditional Final Fantasy. Reminds me more of Phantasy Star, but it's okay.
What's great about it: Storyline, Graphics
What's not so great: Linearity

I'm about half way to 3/4 through this game, (with 30+ hours so far), and it has been really fun. I would say the intended audience might be at least middle school or junior high. Even though the story is great, the characters and plotline doesn't seem to be directed to the younger crowd.
What's great about it: Epic Adventure, Snazzy Graphics, Basic Controls
What's not so great: ... this game shouldn't be dissed.

This is by far the most beautiful Final Fantasy game of the series to date (on the PS3 at least). The game relies heavily on cut-scenes. So much so, in fact, that I would describe the game as being as much cut-scene as there is playable time. This fact makes the game very interesting -- sort of like you are playing a movie. In addition, Square has done a great job of presenting several intertwining story lines at once. The only drawback is that most of the time (at least the first half of the game) you are playing only two of the several main characters (although which particular two you play changes often as the different storylines are presented).
I am not entirely enthused with the battle system. True classic RPG enthusiests beware -- the battle system this time around is real-time. Battles are won an you get a "score". Now, for the life of me I can't understand what good the score is, because you also get EXP (called "CP" now -- another ssemingly useless and annoying change), but it allegedly affects the creature drops at the end of battle (I'm not convinced).
Also, the game is pretty much a guided game as opposed to being free-rome. No "missions". Think Call of Duty, but even simpler in concept. I would have preferred they open it up a little more.
But, even given these two (arguably silly) complaints, I have very much enjoyed playing the game and would recommend it to fellow FF fans! Just be sure to buy it with the Piggyback Interactive paperback or collector player guide, you'll save yourself hours of time trying to figure out the crazy "weapon upgrade" system!
What's great about it: Great storyline, hours of playability
What's not so great: real-time battles, only control leader in battles

This game had an amazing storyline that kept me into it the entire game. The graphics were very impressive, the fighting system took a little getting used to, but after i got into it i loved it. Overall one of the best games I have ever played and definately the best final fantasy i have ever played.
What's great about it: Awesome story, very good length, way fun, awesome graphics
What's not so great: It could have been more challenging, the fighting system took a little bit of getting used to

New Favorite Final Fantasy!!

Highly recommend this game to any fan of the Final Fantasy Franchise!! I feel this game took them one step farther and I look forward to future installments of FF from Square-Enix!! Maybe some DLC next time?
What's great about it: Loved the story as well as being able to set up switch strategies mid battle.
What's not so great: Still a bit linear, but that's the price you pay for such a graphically and compelling HD game!!

I've played and beaten the game and have owned just about every single Final Fantasy game there is. The games linearity, which is referenced in other reviews, adds to the game. It keeps the story focused and makes the experience all that much better. I think the linearity was a great experiment. It also opens up late in the game which really dispels (<--- Final Fantasy reference. YESSS!!!) being too upset with the story driven game. Overall this game was a great experience and I look forward to any future entries into this series.
What's great about it: Musical Score, Massive and Beautiful Environments, Very Story Driven, Fast moving diverse battles.
What's not so great: Lots of grinding if you want to experience the WHOLE game and collect all trophies.

The graphics are visually stunning, unlike any other video game of its kind. The music is just as good, perfectly matching the tone and setting the mood of this gaming experience. The amount of thought and consideration I put into character growth and team strategizing was incredible. Super long game too.
But it sucks that it doesn't have towns or cities. A less linear path would have been better too.
What's great about it: Amazing graphics, great music, and character customization.
What's not so great: Linear story line, no towns or shops.

I was really looking forward to a Final Fantasy game on the PS3, this one doesn't disappoint in graphics and sound but in the first few hours I only had a few fights and it was all cut scenes (which means you put down the controller and watch)
What's great about it: Very pretty with interesting characters and storyline
What's not so great: Not much freedom from linear storyline, slow start
