OK basic printer, bad software & OS compatibility

I bought one of these as a Christmas 2014 present for use with Windows PCs on our local LAN. It worked Ok.
I used Canon's print by email for a year until Canon discontinued it without offering a replacement system for remote printing.
When we added Android devices, we found that the print software was primitive compared to Windows. Double-sided printing, booklet, scaled and layout printing from Android isn't supported.
We replaced Android with Chromebooks to our system last year the mx922 working over wireless became less reliable. It goes offline shorty after printing a job with Google Cloud Print. Waiting for the initialization and then the print job submitted long before is inconvenient. If we printed a lot more this would be a big problem. Scanning requires using a USB flash drive and sneakernet to Chromebook.
The printers' saving graces were its print quality and cost of operation, until just before its 3rd anniversary, when it stopped working with no codes. I'm guessing that while it worked we printed 5000 sheets of paper, so cost of ownership was under $0.02 per page. The printer had been connected through an enterprise quality surge protector, using quality supplies, in a humidity and temperature controlled area. It powers up but was never ready.
We had a large number of ink cartridges remaining, so when I saw the printer was being discounted, I figured it was a reasonable cost for 2-3 more years of service. I got the same model just for basic printing. When replaced, it will be with another small office model. Hopefully in the 5 years since this model was introduced, the things that I found will be addressed.

I have had other Canon printers that I liked so got this one. Takes a long time to start up, shuts down quickly before I can load another page to print. Even setting to Black & White t goes thru color. . Goes thru ink Very quickly. Definitely not on par with previous canon printers. frequently freezes and has error message that it needs to be sent in for repair. need to unplug and reset. Will be skeptable of purchasing another Canonn

I've noticed the improvements

This has been an excellent machine for me. They increased the amount of paper that it will hold, it feeds in the documents more quickly, it has a separate tray for CD and photo printing. The unit does all of this in a slightly smaller size that the one that it replaced. Small things such as the extension for the receipt of copies and other little surprises that let me know that a group of people had really studied past models and made excellent improvements and incorporated them into this machine.

Great printer, I've owned a few versions of this model. Make sure to clean it, tends to have issues with the ink tray failing if not kept clean.

Unreliable

I own two of these printers. A few weeks after the one year warranty was up one them crashed, cannon was nice enough to replace it, but the other printer had an error message “wrong printhead code 1403”. I YouTubed a possible fix that didn’t work so I contacted canon and they will be replacing this printer with a cheaper version TR8520. I certainly didn’t expect such a short life expectancy for this printer.

Flawless Printer

I have had this printer since 2013 and use all the features except for photo printing. Depending on the document, it will print fast if there are no colors and graphics and the document is from MS Office. Sometimes PDF documents print slow, especially if they are web based. WIFI is flawless now that I have a stable network. I can even print documents from my cell phone (Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra) after installing the Canon print app. Faxing works perfectly for send and receive. Scanning works perfectly. I can scan checks and upload them to my bank for deposit. I have had a few issues from time to time scanning multipage documents. If the paper is rough, like documents from Medicare, the sheet feeder will sometimes feed 2 or 3 sheets at one time. Otherwise, the sheet feeder works very well. The ink cartridges are very easy to replace and last quite awhile.
NOTE TO OTHER USERS: If the printer is not used daily, then the next time I go to print, and before it prints the first document page, the printer will to go through its cleaning and calibration sequence which takes several minutes. If you're in a hurry to print a document, that will drive you crazy.
Now for the software..... I found the software to be awkward and confusing to use until I got used to it, and I'm an IT professional. Also, the printer's door drops down with a loud bang if it is closed when I print. This is very annoying if you aren't used to it.

Slow and loud

I don't have this printer, but my boss does. And he is having me look for a new printer. He's an executive and working remotely so needs to do a lot of home printing. This printer is far too slow and loud at that. Will probably look for something like a laser printer that can churn out text heavy documents much more quickly.
