Great Camera at a Great Value

I should start by saying that this is my first DSLR camera. I feel like I can do almost anything that any other camera can do. The limits of this camera are only imposed by its user. That being said, there are some minor features that are missing from some of its larger brethren and the kit lens that comes with it does not have a distance focus scale. But these are relatively minor issues with the camera. The kit lens is excellent in terms of responsiveness and quick auto focus. The camera itself is very lightweight and easy to carry around. The image quality is far beyond what I was expecting. The camera is very easy to use and understand the various settings and functions on the camera. Battery life for me has been really, really good as well. I must say that I don't typically shoot more than 200 pictures at a time. But the auto off feature is a wonderful addition for battery saving.
I love this camera and so does my wife. I would recommend this to ANY beginner in the market for a DSLR.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Missing features/settings

This camera was given to me as a Christmas gift after using a Sony for part time, on the side fun. But holy cow did this little beauty ignite a world of opportunity. I am very young and this was the perfect beginners camera for anybody wishing to pursue photography in any shape or form.
It's incredibly lightweight and small, and by looking at it based on that premise, no way could anybody imagine what this camera is capable of. It takes excellent images in automatic function, but even better in manual (of course if you're aware of how to use manual). Images come out crisp, colorful, and beautiful. I can't stress enough how user friendly it is, but while still maintaining close to professional grade images.
The SL1 has jumpstarted business for me and I will be shooting my first wedding next month using this camera. Canon has definitely snagged themselves a new lifetime customer.

I am an amateur photographer and have been taking photos as long as I can remember. I bought this camera back in 2013 around the time when it just came out. I can not say enough how wonderful this camera is and how much it has exceeded my expectations. It works in every way that I've wanted it to from slowing down the shutter speed to take lighting pictures to taking clear quality photos at sporting events. It still continues to amaze me how wonderful the pictures turn out. With having smaller hands, being lightweight and smaller in size compared to other DSLR's is perfect and it doesn't make me feel that I don't have complete control of the camera. Perfect in every way and it will not disappoint!

This is my first real DSLR. I had been using a mirrorless camera for a couple of years, but found myself wanting a slightly bigger camera with a built-in optical viewfinder. After looking at some full size cameras from other manufacturers, I saw the SL1 and instantly liked it. I did some further research, and convinced myself that the SL1 would be my next camera purchase. No buyer's remorse for me! The SL1 is the perfect size, with the shutter button in an ideal location for my hold. The SL1 also has a couple of features I was not aware of, such as a viewfinder sensor that turns off the LCD when you bring the camera to your eye. Picture quality is good with pleasing sharpness and color tones. I tend to shoot in Program mode a lot, and I have noticed that shutter speeds are faster with the SL1 than with my previous camera. This tells me that the SL1 must have a better sensor, and/or that the lenses are doing a better job of gathering available light. Additionally, the touchscreen LCD is a joy to use, and complements the other controls very well. The menus and functions are pretty easy to understand too. All of this combined with style and good looks makes the SL1 a fantastic product---two thumbs up!
Pros: quiet, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

The perfect DSLR?

Moving up from a Canon point-and-shoot camera, I looked at a number of DSLR's before choosing the SL-1. I am really pleased that it takes great pictures even in poor conditions. Also important is that it's small and light. The two other things that I think are important is that you can treat it like a point-and-shoot if you want. Take off the lens cap, flip the switch to turn it on (it's the switch labeled On and Off), hit the camera button to turn on the LED screen, and push the button to take the picture. The other thing is that are no buttons or whatever on the side of the camera where you would normally hold it.

i was sweating over whether to get this or the t5i. i borrowed a friend's t5i for a couple of weeks and sure, the articulating screen seems to provide better protection for the lcd screen yet other than that, i personally didn't find it to be that big of a deal and i don't plan on taking selfies anytime soon. i figured i would go with the sl1 and i'm glad i did; great entry-level dslr and i can take it anywhere without making it look too obvious. i recommend this to anyone else looking to start using dslr cameras.

Buy this camera!

Purchased this camera to replace a ten year old Rebel XT. The old DSLR menus drove me crazy and I had stopped shooting over the last few years. The SL1 is defintitely the bee's knees! I'm 6 ft tall with medium sized hands and this camera fits comfortably into my grip. The kit lens is superb for a zoom and only bettered, IMO, by my Canon 50mm prime lens - and not by much at that! I fully agree with the reviews which state the SL1 is capable of image quality equal to (m)any Canon consumer level DSLR.
I'm simply knocked out by the shots this camera/lens combo can provide for such a low price. Once you've gone over the owner's manual, there's nothing I can imagine seriously needing that isn't here in the functionality of the SL1.
I see no reason to move up in price to the T5i unless you really, really either find the SL1 too compact for large hands or you just feel you absolutely need a bigger DSLR to look more like a real photographer. The SL1 will do everything that's important to taking a good photograph that the T5i will do, IMO, with one exception. I also have a Canon SX50 superzoom which simply beats the socks off the competition when it comes to close up/macro work. The articulating LCD on the SX50 makes getting close ups of close to the ground or above my head shots quite a simple matter. The LCD of the SL1 is fixed, which means I have to get down farther or go up higher to take some shots. Still, for the price difference between the SL1 and the T5i, I wouldn't have paid the extra just for the articulated screen. I've cleared out a lot of lenses and accessories from my DSLR's bag and can now carry the SL1 AND the SX50 in one kit and not have any shot missed. I learned photography on a Canon way back in the 1970's and have stayed with Canon ever since. I prefer an optical viewfinder over the lower rez EVF's and the SL1's is superb! So tit for tat, the SL1 still beats out my other choices. The SL1 works perfectly with my older Canon lenses and, if you aren't getting an EF lens to perform well on the SL1, I'd say you've misread the instructions or your lens has gone kaflooey. The APS-C sensor and DIGIC 5 processor work wonderfully well together. You'd really have to have a very specific reason to not like this combination IMO. I'm not much on constantly swapping for the latest technology and I expect the SL1 will be with me for many, many creative years of shooting. This is, IMO, THE value leader in consumer level DSLR's and even if something new comes along, I'll probably be too old at that point to actually notice an incrementatl improvement in image quality.
GET THIS CAMERA and stop sweating over what to buy. Go out and start shooting, the SL1 will not disappoint.
