I really detest Mel Gibson and I thought Passion of the Christ was a pothole he'd, never emerge from again (nevermore to see the like of Braveheart). Well, Apocolypto definitely isn't Braveheart; though it is quite a good film. The subtext can get annoying after awhile, but the story kept me watching. I wouldn't suggest buying this one; just rent it.

Mel Gibson gives us another dramatic adventure back into the past. He loves to show us his love for blood, life and death struggles from the good to evil points of view. I only wished he would have showed more of the Mayan culture.

I have to admit, I am not a huge fan of this film. I think Mel Gibson has a good eye as far as directing in the sense of visuals and on Braveheart he proved to be a superb director all around. This didn't do much for me. I was honestly bored. But if you do appreciate this movie and want a good Blu ray, this is a must have for your collection.
What's great about it: Great cinematography, good sound and image on blu ray

I must say that prior to watching this film I heard primarily negative reviews in the tabloids but these people must have gone in with pre-meditated expectations. I simply had none and could not pull away from the screen and neither could my wife who jumped in halfway through after waking up from a nap. The photography is intensely vivid especially during the scenes depicting the shear brutality of a primitive culture and it is obvious the intention was to depict a REALISTIC interpretation of the Mayan civilization and not deliver a watered-down portrayal for the sake of queasy stomached movie goers. The gore in this movie is equal or greater than "Passion of the Christ". If on screen blood is too much for you stick to the PG-13 section. The blue-ray disc shines in bringing the breathtaking scenery and backdrops to your screen as well as delivers decent sound. I would say excellent sound but this isn't exactly a special effects whirlwind. Some cheesy CG in this film though.
What's great about it: Highly interesting perspective of a brutal culture.

Mel Gibson did an amazing job on this film. He came extremely close to interpreting the Mayan culture and civilization. It happened to be the first movie I bought on Blu Ray and I'm very happy that I came across it. Must see if haven't already.
