AVR 1610S replaced AVR 120

My AVR 120 died after 16 Years. Just shows the quality of the HK family of equipment. The 1610S is driving a self designed KLIPSCH (not the new stuff)surround environment. The setup process is pretty straight forward and took less than an hour to complete. The automatic speaker setup alone is worth the price, saved a lot of time. I went for the full setup connecting my VIZIO M60-C3, SONY BDP-BX58 BlueRay DVD Player, Satellite Receiver, and my JVC QL-5 turntable (pre-amp required, and yes, I will not give up my vinyl). The onscreen setup process is character based so no GUI and is simple to navigate. If you are looking to upgrade or a first timer, the 1610S is a good starting point. Good Power, excellent sound, and ease of operation. I've been running HK and KLIPSCH for 38 years, so unless your one of those 1%'ers (McIntosh , you know who you are, and I wish I was one) this is a solid piece of equipment, I highly Recommend it.

The 1610 works beautifully. I have it paired to 5 Polk audio speakers and a sub. The sound is great--the features are great. Amazing that the AVR only weighs 10 pounds.

Great AVR!

I purchased this product about 8 months ago after spending a great deal of time researching the products available that met the requirements I was looking for and within my budget.
For my needs of an AVR, I was looking for a few key features that included
1) the ability to connect to my T.V. via HDMI with 4k and 3D pass through. 2) The ability to connect Roku directly to the AVR. (an option that I did not realize I was looking for until I purchased the 1610S and found that I don't think I could live without now.) 3) Spotify connect. 4) Bluetooth connectivity. 5) Highest quality sound with good separation and low distortion. 6) Network connectivity.
The 1610S was one of many products that offered the features I was looking for, but one of only a hand full that fit into my budget. This is the first Harman Kardon product that I have ever owned, but I had heard that they were a high-quality product and the fact that they offered the features that I was looking for and fit my budget I felt made them one of the more obvious choices. I do admit though, that part of my decision was influenced by the fact that I had never owned an HK product and wanted to find out if they were all they were cracked up to be.
I was a little skeptical at first since the 1610S' price was what I would consider quite reasonable and to be honest a lot less than other options out there offering the same features and of brands that I've had experience with before. I was afraid that at that price the sound quality was not going to be what I was looking for or that some of the features would not function properly and since I purchased online with no way to demo the product I was taking a chance on it, but made sure I had the option to return if unhappy with it.
So, now the review. I could probably have made this review very short and saved anyone who reads it a lot of time by just saying "Exceptional product" or "Highly satisfied customer" but I just don't think that would do it any justice.
I have been happy with this AVR since I took it out of the box. The first thing I noticed is that the 1610S is one of the sexiest looking units I have ever seen. It's very simple, not busy looking at all and very classy. The unit is not as big as a lot of the others out there, so fits nicely in just about any system. Because of its size, it doesn't stand out in the room drawing attention to its self, but when you do look at it you can tell your looking at a quality product.
What does make it stand out though is the quality and clarity of the sound. The sound separation is amazing and I have not been able to hear any noticeable distortion at all, even at the highest volume levels that I've been willing to take my speaker system too and it will crank and is crystal clear all the way up.
Movies have never sounded better, I'm finding I now enjoy types of music that I've never before found pleasurable to listen too. I've even tried out genres or music that I've never been into before, just to see how they sounded and found myself drawn in for hours such as classical. Yeah, I know. What?!? I even took the day off from work/school the day it arrived because I first tried it out listening to Metallica S&M and couldn't pull myself away because I was hearing things that I've never heard before. I know, slacker right. But hey, don't judge till you try it yourself.
To wrap this long drawn-out review of the HK1610S up I will just say that this is the best looking and sounding system I've ever owned. I know there are others out there that could probably top it, but, for the price and the features included at that price, it's a win. The Spotify connect sounds great (better than Bluetooth) and the Roku feature is very nice, not something that I was looking for, just happened to be a feature that I'm glad I have now.
So, in closing, I would highly recommend this AVR. Don't think because of it's price that you are getting a discount product. It is a quality AVR and everything about it says so. It's just a great deal.

The terrible menus and cheap remote ruin it all.

It looks awesome although quite delicate since it's all shiny plastic, very easy to scratch. The power light is too bright even during stand-by. You can set the knob light to extremely bright or completely off but nothing in between. Looks great in the store but annoyingly bright while watching a movie at home.
Sound quality and features are excellent, but the On Screen Display menus are intrusive and of extremely low resolution. The most simple every-day task requires too much navigation through the awful menu for everyone in the room to watch.
Then there's the remote control. Absolutely terrible, even more non-intuitive than the menus and you need to point it straight and close to the device. No amount of fresh batteries can help the poor IR light in it. It's all plasticy and the design could not be more generic and boring. Any cheap oscillating fan has a better remote.
There's a smartphone app, but it's heavily bugged and without fixes even after over a year since I first used it. This could easily support web access from a laptop or tablet for setup, but for some reason it's not offered. Everything is exclusively accessed through the OSD menu. Very little can be done from the front panel. Don't even think of using it without a TV connected; without the OSD you will be extremely limited.
You'd think the Bluetooth capability will be practical, but not here. There's not a button anywhere to select Bluetooth. To use it you must first turn on your TV, enter the OSD menu, select inputs, then scroll through all inputs to the very end which is Bluetooth. At least pairing is very simple and always works. On the front of the device there's an input selector up and down. If you want to try that, you need to be patient. The device will take a second to try and sync to each digital input before letting you go to the next while you scroll.
The sound is great and has all the features you might need in this decade, but the cumbersome and hideous menus ruin the entire experience. This is my first and most likely my last Harman Kardon product. I really thought they were much, much better.
This was clearly designed to look and sound great in a store without ever considering the user experience at all.

The 1610S connected to the HKTS 30 surround sound system is the perfect solution to our problem of creating music and media sound that stimulates or soothes and relaxes in a 1200 sf great room with a soaring 26 ft. ceiling. I appreciate HK 's technical guidance in selecting a sound system perfect for our home.

Good first time receiver

I have used this receiver about 2 weeks and it has been working great ever since. I wish there were more watts per channel, considering that this unit goes for $400, but it gets the job done. I am using 2 Polkaudio bookshelf speakers and a Polkaudio subwoofer as well, and they sound crystal clear. This unit could use more input connections, there is only 1 optical audio input and 2 sets of rca inputs. I would have expected more for the price. This is a good starter receiver, but you may want to consider a different model depending on your input needs.
