I bought this CD on a whim because of its low price and because I loved the new version of the band’s single, “Dance of the Manatee”. I’m truly glad I did. I love every track on the album. The vocals are unlike anything I’ve ever heard before. The lead singer has incredible range and utilizes an odd warbling vibrato that I find quite catchy. I recommend listening to track samples 1. “Dance of the Manatee”, 4. “Wife, Kids and The White Picket Fence”, 8. “Walls Of Jericho, and 11. “Say When” to get an immediate impression; but if you have the time, listen to them all.
The album art is enjoyable. The cover is a booklet of eleven illustrations with the first line of every song at the bottom. They are quite bizarre and I have yet to understand them. I like the unique style of the cover and the booklet art and I believe it echoes the fresh style of the music very well. My one objection is that I wish they had included the song lyrics. Even after listening to the CD for over a month, I still can’t make out what some of the songs are saying. I’m sure they have some deep philosophical meaning.

After just one listen of this band's album, it quickly grew to be one of my favorites. The music blends heavy rock guitars with strange instruments, such as the harpsichord. The singer's voice all so adds great atmoshpere to each of the densly lyrical songs. The album art features images that harken back to old-style nursery ryme books, and perfectly accent the bands mix of old sounds with modern instruments. Oh, did i mention that they are featured on Serj Tankian's (System of a Down) "Serjical Records" label? All in all, this is a great debut effort and the band shows a great deal of promise. Pick up this album.

My first experience with Fair To Midland was by mistake. I was going through song samples on an online playlist looking for a song and ended up clicking on "Dance of the Manatee". I liked what I heard and bought the album a few months later. It was one of those happy accidents you hear about. 'Fables From A Mayfly...' is an extremely unique mix of alternative, punk, modern rock, grunge, pop, jazz, emo, and heavy metal. Despite having all those genres mixed in, none of the songs sound cluttered or disorganized. Each track is musically tight and very well written. The lyrics are catchy and the singer has an amazingly wide range of vocals. There are so many bands out there today that try to merge different genres together, not many do so successfully. However, Fair To Midland have created a sound of their own that's original and unclassifiable. Not since 30 Seconds To Mars has a band created such a unique and fresh sound.

This album is so good that almost all of the other cd's I own are now abandoned to the corner of my closet to collect dust, lol. One of very few cds I have ever owned that I am able to listen to beginning to end without feeling the need to skip over any songs. There really are no words I can find to adequately describe how amazing this band is.
What's great about it: Outstanding music you can't tear yourself away from
