Great negative scanner

I purchased this V500 Scanner in May of 2008 and am closing in on using it 5000 times. I inherited 3 generations of negatives and photos.I had a 3490 Epson scanner but needed a scanner for larger negatives and found the V500. This scanner is wonderful.I scan in the 400 dpi range and it is flawless everytime I use it. It is user friendly, get great results and will be able to distribute the results to family members. I am scanning alot of negatives that are 2 1/2''X4 1/2''and also 2 1/2"X 2 1/2".This is why I needed this scanner. The light bar is wider then the 3490 model which gives great results for the price.

Doesn't work well with Lion
on December 5, 2011

I bought a new MacBook Pro and was looking for a new scanner to work on all of the old family photos. The V500 was recommended by a number of people so I bought it. Because I'm running Lion, I can't run the install program. I keep getting "You can't open the application FineReader because PowerPC applications are no longer supported." I was able, after trial and error and with no help from the Epson website, to get all of it loaded but the Abbyy FineReader. Abbyy won't help because I purchased it through Epson and though I sent my request to Epson yesterday, I haven't heard boo from them. While what I can scan has been of high quality, I have, overall, been very disappointed. I would have trouble recommending this to a friend with a new Mac.

First, it helps if you have had a scanner before.
They all (most) scanner work the same way.
DO NOT plug in the scanner until you have installed the soft ware. Turn off your security soft ware. Keep the box, it has the Serial number.
It does take some time for the soft ware to install.
NOW, Surprise, it will work. I am reviewing slide
copying. No, it's not fast but not bad. The reproduced image is great. The BPI can go to 9600, but can takes forever. 600 or 800 is all you will need. You will have a choice, Scan or preview.
Scan will transfer to PICTURES on to the computer.
Preview will let you see the image before it goes to the computer. NOTE ! use PROFESSIONAL setting, you will see it on the sceen. To get back to scan from preview, click on preview twice.
The instuctions are great until you get to film copy. EXPLORE, you will get it. Note, the top cover has two click stops to hold the lid up, see other reviews. No, the back light is not burned out. You have to turn it on, EXPLORE. Hope this helps. Great Scanner, very happy with it. The only thing that does not work well are the instuctions. It need a (Quick Start) fold out for film/slide copying. All the edit features are there.
Scans direct to (Pictures) on the computer.
For the money you can't beat it. BUT, take your time and EXPLORE the on screen instructions.
YES I would recommend V500 to a friend, for sure.

Not Very Happy

Purchased brand new a couple of weeks ago to replace an Epson scanner I had for years. Chose this model based on reviews from PC magazine. Big mistake. It is slow and noisy. I have had to reload the included software twice already to get scanner to work. Still can not get the EPSON scan software to work. Says it can not find the scanner? The interface with my old scanner was far superior. VERY disappointed.

Epson V500 Photo Scanner

I recently found some very large black and white negatives dating back to the 1920's and wanted to see them as a photo. I bought the scanner and it was exactly what I needed. It worked perfectly and had just the accessories to accommodate the large negatives and now I have some great photos of great grandparents and aunts and uncles when they were young.

I purchased the scanner, primarily , to save colored slides of pictures that I had taken, over 50 years ago, when in the military and when my youngest children were born. the slides printed out into beautiful, clear , first class prints . A far better job then I expected.

Fabulous Photo Scanner

I bought the V500 to scan the thousands of family negatives and slides which have accumulated over the years. So far I have scanned about 1,000 black and white and color negatives -- many were odd sizes, including some from the 1930's as well as 126 and 110. The scanner performed beautifully and gave excellent results. The color and light corrections are very easy to use and greatly enhance the photos. I have been able to scan much faster than I had expected based on user reviews. Also, contrary to some postings, I found the software easy to deal with. This scanner is a fantastic value and I would recommend it unreservedly.
