A great scanner if it works

The first one I bought, I brought home, set it up and turned on the switch and it didn't work. Dead, would not turn on.
I returned it and got another and set it up, turned it on and it worked. So, I've been scanning negatives and transparencies. It works great and easy to set up and use. It produces great digital scans of negatives. I doesn't hold the negatives flat enough though, I think, but close and seems to be focusing on them ok anyway. I do 35mm negatives and 645mm medium format negatives and I wish it would more than 2 frames at a time in medium format.
NOW, this scanner is DEAD. It turned itself off and would not turn on again. So, it has been sent out for warranty repair and I hope it comes back working properly.

Happy with the results even with older negatives. Did find the product slow to scan especially with scanning a large number of negatives. Scanned pictures turned out great too but not so pleased with the results it produced with slides although I didn't spend a lot of time with that option. I prefer to use my own editing program after scanning as I found trying to edit with the scanner features a waste of time as I still ended up editing them further to get the results I was wanting with my own editing program.

Everything I expected (and more)

I read lots of reviews and four things were consistent in most of the reviews. They felt that:
(1): Quality of scans is terrific.
(2): Software is clumsy.
(3): Installation can be a hassle.
(4): Slide holder is too flimsy.
As for #1, I agree completely. Quality is superb, including scans of positive and negative films and slides.
#2, I disagree. I find the scanning software straightforward and easy to use. No complaints there.
#3, I disagree. Installation was a breeze. I took the precaution of first downloading the latest drivers from Epson BEFORE trying to use anything. I installed the included Epson software from disk, then installed the updated drivers. Finally (following the instructions) hooked up the scanner. No hiccups. Perfect results.
#4, Maybe. The slide holder is still on the flimsy side, though it differs from descriptions I read in reviews. The holder lays on the glass and you drop slides into it. This seems to be a re-design and is welcome. I see little chance of breakage with this design short of sitting on it.
so ... I give this scanner high marks on all counts. I've tried lots of gadgets and scanners for copying slides (including the useless devices that take photos of the slides) and nothing in this price range comes close.

Very happy with the machine

My intention when buying this scanner was to digitise all of my old photographs and slides, which I have started with great effect. I am very pleased with the results and the software that came with it is just what I needed.
I one thing that I was not too happy with is the dirty finger marks on the underside of the scan table glass, you only notice then when the light is on, so far they have not had any impact on the scan results

It's an okay run of the mill scanner that works okay with Read Iris 11 and Abby fine Reader Sprint. In order to scan in to Photo Shop CS 5 you have to open Photo Shop in 32 bit mode. (Highlight Photo Shop, go to File -Get Info and check "Open in 32 bit mode. Since we don't scan slides, the cover is way too heavy. We have never gotten the buttons to work reliably with our imac and snow leopard.

Better than I expected

Got this to scan 35mm slides, and negatives (both color and b&W). Had it set up and working in an hour and did my test batches of slides and negatives with excellent results. Even handled a bunch of old 1/2 frame 35mm slides. Took one of my favorite tri-X negatives and using Elements 7 and my printer, got as good a print as I ever did in a darkrooom.

So easy to use, yet so professional

I have this scanner at home & was surprised to find that the college where I take photography & photoshop classes from uses the same one. The professor just raved about how good this one was & they had one at almost every desk in more than 5 classrooms. What a surprise when I double-checked mine at home & found it was the same one. Top-notch quality & yet so easy to use. I have been using this scanner for at least 2 years. I've scanned so many photos for sharing as well as to repair old & damaged family photos. Love it!

Great negative scanner

I purchased this scanner for medium format size negatives my grandfather and father had for years. 70% of my scanning for 2 years has been negatives and after 19,000 scans it sort of broke down. Not the mechanics part but the distortion of the colored prints. I certainly got my money's worth out of what I paid originally for it. Also user friendly. The light bar is wider and the actual drive belt is wider and I felt this would stand up for my use and it certainly did. Besides the ability for scanning larger negatives(4''X4" & 4"X2") you have a adapter for slides and 35 mm size negatives. Great results with photos and documents as well.
After reloading this scanner hope to get it functioning again.
