Almost perfect

I bought this to digitize my thousands of film pictures I have taken over the years. It is fantastic. I can adjust the resolution to whatever size I want and easily save the digital versions of the pictures to my computer. The only problem I had is there is a spec of dust under the glass, right where I need to place the pictures on the glass. There is no way to get to this spec of dust without sending the entire scanner back to the manufacturer. I have to photoshop this spec out of every picture. I could give it five stars if it didn't have that spec of dust showing up on every picture. When the bulb goes bad I will send it back for repair and to have that spec of dust removed from under the glass.

excellent scanner

I came across old 120 negatives of family photos that I wanted to put on to CD. I needed to find a scanner that would do the job at a reasonable price. The Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner did the job at a great price. The only problem was that the instructions aren't very good. I had to figure some things out myself. All in all, a great product.

v500 overall

Over all the v500 is a good reliable unit but it falls short when used with windows 7 any version. With windows XP professional consider this unit an excellant anchor to your system. Personally if a buyer was looking at single unit scanners wanted the best I would highly suggest the V700. V500 the only caution is like most sensitive electronic equipment use a rolling cart if unit gets moved around. Overall resolution is excellant, but viewing film slides and negatives it has serious limitations. As an office unit expect an excellant investment.

i've always been an epson person, ever since i took my first digital photography class back in the 90's. their products have always been very easy to use and have features for both professionals and enthusiasts alike. i needed an affordable scanner that wouldn't sacrifice quality as i am digitizing a portfolio. i found everything i needed and more with the V500. excellent dpi quality for enlargements and detail, built in negative and transparency capabilities, and an easy to use interface that allows both fully automatic and fully manual useability. above and beyond in quality for the price.

Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner

This scanner was recommended to me and I have to say I am thrilled to bits with it. I am able to scan in old slides with hardly any dust particles and no colour change.
As I was so disappointed with my old scanner, I did not believe there was a scanner out there that could do the job I wanted unless it was a high-priced professional model.
Way to go Epson!

Quick setup

Once I got the software installed on my iMac, the rest was pretty much plug and play. I got the slide holder in the wrong way and then I put the slides in backwards. Once I figured it out, it was one button scanning of my 4-at-a-time slides. The best feature is that it puts each slide into a separate jpg file. This couldn't be easier to use. I didn't bother with Photoshop Elements since I have the real PS5.
Now I can dump all my old Kodak Carousel trays soon.

What I expected

I did check beforehand the results of this scanner (just search v500 on flickr to see that people did with the product) so I knew what to expect in quality. The possibility of scanning 35mm and 120 is a plus. Scanning of format like 24x24 on 72x24 on 35mm film is awesome. Perfect for the lomography freaks who like to experiment with film.
I really recommend it

Scanner works great, scanning several photos at the same time works well and text documents look great. I don't see any scratch removal from the old photos I have scanned (maybe they are to far gone). I don't care for the photo editing software, I have been using Paintshop Photo Pro and find it more versatile.
