good but not great

An updated version of a familiar EPSON design but still suffering from all the old design ills. To begin, item was received damaged ... specifically the feeder plastic sheeting that sits on top of the glass was wrinkled and punctured. The feeder does not work well, often gets stuck even with very few pages. There is also a distinct artifact streaking (green) when scanning any photos already in a printed page. Generally slow, slow slow interface no matter what "dpi" setting or upgraded software you use. Overall a 1 star rating for the money - this may very well be the very last Epson made device I will ever purchase after many years.

An excellent Scanner

The V500 is easy to use. It has both a professional setting that allows a lot more input and a quick home style. The professional mode works very well when you want to have more control over what you are doing. The home mode allows you to scan quickly without input from you. The scanner does an excellent job of scanning several photos at one time and brings them in as separate photos. The Abby Fine Reader does a very good job, even with old obituaries and newspaper articles, of reading what is in the article. You do have to correct some things, but not many. The copier direct to your printer is a nice feature as well. The dust and scratch removal feature works very well, although if the photo is badly scratched, you will have to finish the work.

I have liked the professional interlaces by Epson over the last 10+ years and this caused me to buy this new one. This new scanner is faster and the interface is typical Epson, great but only work in 32 bit programs. These interfaces are not Twain 64 bit compliant and won't work on true 64 bit programs that I have. See Twain Working Group's "Twack-64" program to verify this. I can only get the simpler interface to come up using a non Twain option and that doesn't have any option to get the pro interface. The "Twain Acquire" option window is blank on these programs. I hope Epson corrects this as I see this problem talked about all over the internet.

Nice little scanner

I was the high school paper photographer back in the 70s when all we had was 120/220 rolls of B&W film. Recently I came across a box with hundreds of (hilarious) negatives. The V500 has been doing an incredible job of digitizing these negatives, and I'm posting them up on Yearbook.*** for all my classmates to enjoy.

Scanners for negatives
on October 23, 2013

This is my third Epson scanner over ten or fifteen years. The first one became outdated, and the second one stopped working recently, so I purchased V500. It comes with a medium format template, which I use, 35mm which I use, and a template for slides which I don't use.
It scans the mediums and 35s flawlessly and quickly. I usually download my negatives on my PC and transfer them to my mac. This time I wanted to download directly to my Mac and ran into some minor problems with the packaged software. Simply put, I needed to go to Epson and download the drivers and utilities onto the Lion 10.7. It worked fine then, and I did need help from customer support, and got it. I am a pleased customer.
