Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner

I have owned this scanner since 9-11-2011.
I have tested this machine on several occasions and in different job.
I can say by now that I am very satisfied with the way it performs.
I have another older scanner from Epson and because I am satisfied with the job that one does, I bought this one.
I especially like that there is no waiting for the light to warm up between scanned jobs and how quick the scans are done.

My new Epson scanner

So far, so good. A decent little all-purpose scanner. The actual unit has the right stuff, so my only complaint is the support material. The assembly-setup instructions were tiny, miserable little graphics. The webpage link also had a rinky-dink quality to it. Only experience with setting up more than a few scanners in my time allowed me to proceed with confidence.
I also find the control panel interface to be very "20th century". The scanner I just replaced was 12 years old and its graphic interface was much slicker and intuitive and "friendly".

Using the V500 on Apple LION

The V5000 seems to not be up to speed when it comes to using it with Lion OS. Lion is causing me problems, and the V500 software may be only collateral damage. But it is certainly limiting my scanning capabilities. Maybe I just need to explore features more.

I just got this scanner and right after setting it up I did some 4800 dpi scans of 35mm B&W negatives. Wow! The scans are very detailed and subtle tonal variations are beautifully rendered. I am a very happy camper. The only negative is that the scanner is SLOOOOW. Be prepared to wait almost ten minutes to scan eight negatives at this resolution.

V500 PHOTO SCANNER
on June 28, 2012

I got this scanner in May or June of 2011. I found the instructions lacking but the machine is a great piece of work. I have scanned old negatives, 35mm transparencies and photo prints. Very good results with all. The negatives came out even better than I expected. Would I buy this scanner again, absolutely. One of Epsons best kept secrets and that's a shame.

ALL I CAN SAY IS WOW. IT's GREAT.

I bought my original V500 in February 2010 to do the project of scanning and filing on flash drives old family photos prior to the digital era. Some pictures were prior to WWII. I was nearly done when on Monday it died. I tried to use my printer/scanner but it wouldn't work as easy so Tuesday morning I bought another one. It is now Thursday morning and I finished the last 900 photos. It automatically scans photos/documents AND cleans up the dust. I hated to have to buy another scanner so close to finishing but I am finished. The copier/scanner does not automatically distinguish what it is and I could only do one at a time. With the V500 I could do 3 or 4 at a time.

Grat addition

This is a great addition to your hardware if you are into photography. I was able to convert over 1,500 family slides into digital pictures with little difficulty. I have also been able to copy pictures for friends to make a Power Point presentation using my new Epson Power lite S11. Between the two products and Adobe Photoshop Element the possibilities are really unlimited.
I have already recommenced the Epson photo copier to several friends, and at the end of the month I am doing a Power Point Presentation for a friend who is celebrating her 90th birthday.

Wow, is this a nice scanner

My old scanner was at the point that it refused to talk to my operating system (Mac OS X Lion) any more, and it was more trouble than it was worth to limit scanning to when I was on a PC, so I looked for a new one. After some research, I chose this one, even though it doesn't scan legal-size.
Wow, is this a nice scanner. I should have dumped the old one a long time ago. The scan clarity is amazing, and the doc feeder is a nice plus.
I haven't timed it, but I'd say I get a 600 dpi scan in about a third of the time of the old one. And the scan is gorgeous - I don't have to spend time cleaning the image up, as with the old one.
Thanks, Epson, for another good product.
