Super scanner

Arrived yesterday so I haven't used it for very long but the use I have gotten from this scanner has been great. Very clear, crisp images and super easy to use. I have a Mac and if you follow the instructions regarding set-up you should have no problem. It does take a little time to set up but well worth the effort.

I Love it, but just short of perfect!

Instead of scanning pic's with my all-in-1 printer-copier-scanner I wanted something:
A. More Portable.
B. Capable of scanning negatives, slides & pics.
C. With high resolution, quality scans 2 view pics on an HDTV from an SD or USB device.
With 1,000's of family photos, negatives & slides degrading & in need of scanning I didn't want 2 sacrifice any of these features!
I found that this product has all of these features & is very user friendly.
While the versatility & quality of this product is def worth the purchase, I don't understand why EPSON didn't either:
A. Make the device capable of downloading files wirelessly.
B. Have Internal memory.
C. With SD & USB ports 2 scan directly 2 the scanner without a PC.
Many of the cheaper, less versatile devices have these features. While this device met & exceeded my expectations for the price this product should have 1 or more of these features 2!

Excellent scanner this will pay for itself in no time. Instead of paying the lab to convert my negatives and slides to jpeg I now can do it my self and save $$$. Very good quality scanner well made and works with out issues.

Love my Epson Perfection

I had an Epson Perfection 3171 Photo that I loved. It made clear copies of pictures from 8x10 to wallet. I had it for several years, but it was not compatable with my new Windows 7 computer. I purchased the perfection V500 Photo knowing it would be as good or better than my 3171. I highly recommend it to anyone who needs clear percise copies.

Epson Perfection V500

I have scanned both photos and slides with this unit. Both have turned out exceptionally well. I am scanning a lot of old slides to preserve them on my computer. The software allows me to remove dust and restore faded color, which is magnificent. The slides have turned out great. It took a little while to figure out the best resolution, but once I found what I liked it's a breeze. This is a great scanner.

Good hardware, poor software

I have owned an Epson CX8400 for several years, and it prints really well and has a built-in document scanner. The software to use this scanner took some time for me to master, but it works quite well.
My film photograph collection contains a variety of positive film formats, including 35 mm. slides, 38 mm. superslides and 2 1/4 x 2 3/4 inch (120 film) positive film. In researching film scanners, I found the Epson Perfection V500 scanner that was on sale for $140. It can scan with resolutions of up to 12,800 dpi and should be able to scan all of my film sizes, so I purchased this unit. In two weeks of testing, I found that it scans 35 mm slides really well (if you don’t mind being limited to only 4 slides per scan), but many difficulties result when scanning superslides. About half of them get cropped to regular slide format. The on-line manual shows no reference to "superslide". I called tech support and was not able to get a solution. However, upon attempting to use their web help, a tip appeared under FAQs. When preview results appear incorrect, they said to uncheck "thumbnails". This enables the user to designate a marquis to select all of the slides as one image. The best solution I have found, is to use the film scan template that has an opening for 2 1/4 x 4 3/4 inch film. Unfortunately, this allows only 2 superslides at a time to be scanned. I use Photoshop to crop the results into 2 images and save them separately.
These are only a few of the problems I have had. The scanner is sometimes not found unless I reboot my computer, including replugging the USB cord or restarting the scanner. Also, I have not found a way of naming the settings I designate, so I have to write down what they are actually used for. (E.g., Setting 1, setting 2, etc.) The resulting exposure is usually not optimum, so needs further correction.
It looks like Epson hacked their old scanner software to use with this scanner and didn't bother to check everything.
If you are looking to a regular slide scanner, this is a good choice, but for anything more unusual, it would be best to get a more professional unit.

Old photos never die

I had read great reviews on this product. Having used it for the last two months, I see why the good reviews. I am in the process of turning my European roots, old photos, into digital photo albums. The results are fabulous, even though I am still a novice using this Epson Perfection V500. Dust removal, backlight correction, and the Digital Ice Technology on slides and negatives are only a few of the features making corrections for clean and sharp images. Very happy with my purchase and new hobby.
