Epson V500 quality scans and user friendly

After using my Epson 1640 Photo scanner for 14 years it started showing a blue vertical line in my scans so I decided to buy the Epson V500 photo scanner. I was very impressed with the scans of the Epson 1640, but, the scans I am getting out of the V500 are even better. I am a professional photographer and resolution is very important to me. I make a living in providing quality scans and as a result quality prints for my customers. I work in the windows 7 environment and set-up of the V500 Photo scanner was extremely easy. This scanner is even more quiet than my old scanner. If you want quality scans and an easy to use scanner that sync's effortlessly with any photo program, this is the scanner to get. I highly recommend it to anyone. I hope it gives me many years of service as did my old Epson 1640. By- the-way, the Epson 1640 blue line issue I mentioned above is a line you see only when the image was magnified 150%, other wise you cannot tell it was there. I gave my Epson 1640 to my daughter who is now using it to scan her regular school work.

Not for Windows 7 PC's

Even though Epson states that the V500 includes optional software such as Photoshop and Fine Reader, they don't include versions for Windows 7. The Epson support site provides a link to those manufacturers where you can BUY the compatible software.
Guess you're OK if you stay on XP, but you lose significant promised value if you upgrade to Windows 7.
Epson needs to provide the software that it advertises.

Amazing and Impressed

Had bought a scanner for my folks for Christmas 2010 to convert their 40-50 year old slides and the results were poor to say the least. Having decided to do it right the first time, did some research and decided on the Epson V500. Just purchased it this morning from Staples and I am amazed and impressed with the results. Results are clear with great color and tone, and truly amazing. Looking forward to getting them all done, make dvd's and give them to family members for future gifts. Some of the reviews I read when doing my research noted a con to this device being it takes too long. While it does take time, the results make up for it! Would recommend to Epson to find a way for their future design for quicker way for customers to replace the slides. Seems a bit antiquated with having to lift the plastic slide console to remove the slides right from the scanner glass top and then have to replace the plastic slide console and then place the new slides to be scanned. Otherwise, would rate this scanner a 4.8 out of 5.0. Almost perfect!
Thanks Epson!

Perfection Acheived!

At first use, I was simply amazed by the high quality of the scans, as well as the versatality of the scanner.
And then I discovered the "professional mode". Wow!
I use it routinely for scanning negatives and transparencies of stereographs, both recent and antique. I also scan archival printed sterograph cards routinely. Many of these present challenges due to preservation artifacts, but correction solutions are easy to find.
Non traditional applications, such as the scanning of geological specimens work great!
The provided software loaded without incident on all of the computers where I need it (this is a rare occurence).
This is truly a quality product.

Unravelling the past

When I cleared out my father's effects on his death I found a box of old negatives dating from the 1920s through to the era of slides in the 1960s. I could not bring myself to toss them out so have had them in a drawer for the last 20 years or so. As I am now deep into family history and have very few photograph's of my father's family I have always wanted to see what treasures the old negatives might yield. The purchase of the V500 has now allowed me to access them in a quick and painless way, scanning and storing them takes only a few minutes-finding out the 'who and where" of these photos will take considerably longer. I should mention that the early negatives are very brittle and have to be treated with great care but so far I have been able to retrieve a very acceptable quality of image.
Now if I only knew who that young lady was who was with my father in the long grass? It certainly was not my mother!

SO Glad I Bought This One!

I did about a months' research, and kept coming back to this one, but it was outside my budget. Then, found it at a steal of a price, and boy, am I happy!
I have about 40 years' of negatives & slides to convert to digital images. My first-ever photos, taken in the early '60s, were on 620 film - this scanner has a medium format holder, and it works great.
I still don't understand most of the software settings but, the default scans are good - and blow up tolerably well to my 16" screen. I have not (nor plan to) printed any scanned photos, but believe these default settings scans would be OK up to 5x7, and probably 8x10. I have not yet scanned colour negatives or slides.
My main complaint is not directed specifically at this scanner or at Epson, but rather at all user documentation & interfaces, these days: people reading documentation do NOT understand what a product can do! Documentation should be teaching by example, not just a reiteration of the spec sheet. And screens should have hover quick tips for all options, so I don't have to load the full Help for each question I have.
I think that there is a bug in the pre-scan screens - there is some sort of "save settings" but, even if I choose a saved setting, the screens always go back to "current setting". This is an annoying waste of time.
Also, using the Medium Format holder, the "original item size" is something like 2"x9" - and can't be changed to the actual negative size. I spent a long time on that, then just gave up and scanned anyway - and it came out fine. In hindsight, I think the 2x9 refers to the opening in the holder??? I finally also figured out that I had to choose "Professional Mode" if I wanted to scan medium format, and that I needed to choose 6x9 films so that the software wouldn't crop my scans (even tho' my film is technically 6x8). I then have to go back and manually crop the empty edges from the scan.
I already have/use PhotoShop Elements 6 (which came with the V500). I do not like the interface - actually, there isn't one. One chooses PSE6, but then has to wait for that to load, and then has to figure out how, from inside PSE6, to capture the scan. So, it's easier for me to choose Epson Scan (this isn't in the quick start, by the way) put the scans into my Pictures folder, then open PSE6, let it find all new items, and catalog/edit/etc. from there. This probably will be less annoying once I'm scanning batches instead of one negative at a time (which is all I can do with medium format).
Summary: I LIKE this scanner!!! Even if I never get beyond the default settings, it definitely gives me acceptable archiving of old film - and so far the scan quality is more than I'd hoped for. I wish the documentation/interfaces had been written for me, instead of a professional photographer, but even if I never find the time to educate myself, I am satisfied with its output.

I was able to have this up and scanning within 10 minutes of opening the box. It offers great flexibility from full auto to pro settings. My 9 year old daughter could scan pictures withing 5 minutes of watching me.
Great resolution and easy to use at a great price.

Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner

I bought a new computer several months ago with a Windows 7 operating system and after I powered it up I was shocked to find that most of my old hardware and software was not compatable. My main letdown was my old trusty HP flatbed scanner.
I searched and at last desided on the Perfection V500 Scanner. Boy, was I happy after connecting and trying this unit. It is many times easer and faster than what I had.
Thanks Epson for a great product.
