100+ year old glass negatives on the V500

I thought I would pass on an interesting use for the V500 - scanning 100+ year old glass negatives. Of course the slide/film carriers would not work on the odd sized glass negatives, so I had to carefully line up the negs so the lid lighting would work.
Bottom line - the V500 did a great job pulling an image off these old, poorly stored, and sometimes damaged glass plate negatives. Each scan required cropping, and image manipulation and clean up - but the resulting digital images were a true glance back into our world 100+ years ago.

epson v500 office scanner

I already own a v500 standard scanner and it is much quicker than the scanner mode of my all in ones. The multiple page feeder speeds thing up even more. having an instruction sheet for the multile page feeder with the scanner package would be a huge improvement, it took me awhile to look at pictures of the scanner in the spec sheets to figure a few things out. Once i got that done it has workrd very well. I'm scanning a lot of magazine articles to convert to digital from paper so it will be getting a huge workout. It would be neat if just the page feeder was available as a seperate item. The software included had been completely satifactory for my purposes. The only question now is how well it will stand up to the heavy use I will give it, only time will tell.

Good scanner

I have scanned a couple of thousand negatives in the few months since I purchased my Epson V500. For 35 mm negatives it has been an excellent scanner. But I have a lot of 120 &126 size films and I have not found a way to scan them. Why can't Epson make adopters for various film sizes?

Great film scanner

I bought the V500 hoping it would do more than just 35mm slides/film and was pleasantly surprised. I had a large number of slides that pre-dated the 35mm format and a large number of black and white negatives that varied in size. The scanner did a superb job in scanning all of them. Some of the old slides were suffering from specks on them and inaccurate colors and turning on the Digital ICE option and the Color Restoration option cleaned them up beautifully. The ICE option does add to the scan time but I found it well worth the wait. I also found it much easier to use then my previous scanner and the price was great to top it off.

Running in Mac Lion.
on May 18, 2012

On my Mac I run both Windows (under Parallel) and OS Lion, latest version. However the scanner works OK in Windows 7, but not at all in Lion. Message:"Can not be started". This is the second scanner V500 I installed and the same problem. I installed it exactly as instructed for Mac Lion, i.e. downloaded driver and utilities directly from Epson.com. It used to work fine in previous version Leopard. By-the-way, the troubleshooting window is worthless. Please help.
Thank you.

The scanner is the best I have had to date. I have been scanning very old photos, for family records. Some of these photos are 150 or more years old. I am scanning in the 720 dpi plus range all the time. I can get perfect images.
I do recommend this to anyone who is taking the time to scan high quality images.
If you want a scanner for day to day work get an all-in-one, such as you find in the Epson Artisan Series.
Note:- I am using a Mac 10.9 OS, and there is a current version of Epson software that is compatible.

More than 8 years

We have been using the scanner for more than 8 years. It has operated just like it is supposed to function. Recently we downloaded the drivers for Windows 10 and that too was a good experience. It just keeps on going. It works on all the documents, photos, articles, and whatever we put on the scanner surface. Quality of the scan is excellent. Software that came with scanner works well too curr
