I like my book to run the equipment in a separate package either by CD or by hard copy. I find the equipment a little difficult to use because of the lack of instructions. I do like the smoothness in operation.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

The software easily installed and I was able to use the scanner within about 5 minutes of having it out of the box. Decent scan area. Resolution is great. I am using the scanner to scan small size artwork as I need good digital images of the artwork for my web site and for prints. Taking pics of the art with my digital camera was not working out very well. The scanner was reasonably priced and with the prints I hope to be selling as a result of this, will save to purchase the very high quality art scanner. Overall, I highly recommend this scanner as it is easy to install the software, running scans are a breeze, and it is well worth the money spent.
I would recommend this to a friend!

V500 Photo Scanner Great

I hate to read reviews of products just after the customer has plugged the unit in. This is my first scanner so here is my opinion. This is a great scanner for negatives, photos and business usage. I bought the scanner for the photo and negative application and it has worked great! In the last year I have scanned over 4000 photos and negatives and the results were beyond my expectations. I had no problems at all connecting the unit to my computers one with XP and the other 7. Quick and easy. Epson software gives you some ability to improve the quality of the scan, which is really not needed, but another photo program could be used if needed to improve the pictures if needed at printing. I really purchased the scanner to do about 2000 negatives which turned out great. The speed of the scan is ok but really slows down when you choose the higher resolutions. The default resolutions were more than adequate. The manual documentation is complicated at times because you have to go through many screens to get your answer. Very satisfied with this purchase and would recommend to others!

I purchased this scanner after my Perfection 4490 scanner died after a couple decades of use !! The V500 is amazing. I scanned some old dusty prints and negs. The scanner removed the dust and scratches very well. Images are great.

Not easy to use

This scanner came with no operation manual. I do not thing I should have to go online and print one to figure out how to use it.
It is noisy and slow. They claim it is a fast scanner but it takes over a minute to scan a page of a document.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Good scanner, lousy software.

It seems major manufacturers, for at least a decade, have felt that it is perfectly ok to sell good hardware with absolutely terrible software. First, the scanner ships with disks that don't work in Mac Lion - and their "install" instructions basically tell you how to use the preinstalled mac drivers. The only way to get to the scan function is open system preferences. Once there, you can open the scanner - but it by defaults opens for Paper scan, Black and White - yes, Black and White. Nothing you can save seems to change the defaults. I dropped in four slides - did a overview scan, realized one of the slides was turned - when I opened the lid to fix it - the scanner went into "orange blinking light, catatonic mode", requiring a powercyle. I.E. once you've done an overview you cannot open the scanner. There are times when it is "working" that there is no progress indicator - you have to listen very carefully to realize it is scanning. I've been using consumer grade scanners for two decades and it seems the software has gone completely downhill. The software is designed to shove in a paper, scan, print and run. Why build a great transparency scanner, then presume no one actually wants to use the better features of the hardware? AND their support page actually points to Silverfast as a Lion solution - but when I go to Silverfast - there is no mention of Lion, nor is the V500 listed under compatible scanners under mac os.

It is easy and quick to scan documents and phots to my computer. It is also easy to e-mail scanned items to a friend. It makes life a lot easier.
