For a while I was satisfied with using an all-in-one unit until some critical scans of slides and negatives were needed. Being very pleased with my Epson Workforce printer I bought an Epson scanner. The quality of scans, ease of use, and options for the final scan exceeded my expectations. The ability to enlarge the image to standard 35 mm print sizes resulted in a superior print with a minimum of post processing.
I would recommend this to a friend!

The Good and the Bad of 35mm Slide scanning

I have only used the scanner for scanning 35mm slides. Slides were 30 to 50 years old, Ektachrome and Kodachrome. Most of the Ektachrome were very faded.
Pros: Scans to good resolution. Automatic color correct was good for about 90% of the slides. Some severely faded slides needed help with additional correction software. Backlight correction was also good.
Cons: There are two types of dust removal, only one can be used at a time. The slides were dusted with a special brush. The Digital ICE Technology was used to scan the first hundred slides and appeared to remove all the dust. After reviewing the results on the computer monitor at a normal magnification there was no dust, but an obvious black outline around faces, eyes, light clothing, etc. I switched to the dust removal built-in to the provided software. This did not do an acceptable job of dust removable, but did not leave an outline. It did leave green dust marks on the scan, which could not be identified under magnification of the slide. I was able to retouch the scans to remove most of the marks, but it was very time consuming.

Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner

I have been using this model for some 3 years now and find it perfectly suitable for scanning b&W and color materials and pictures, the results are most satisfactory. The onscreen menus are clear and give you plenty of room for all kinds of adjustments.

Great Quality, Easy to Use

After much searching, my brother told me this was the scanner to get. He was right. Easy to use, and it has great quality. I wish there was more of an instruction manual to describe when and why I would use the non-automatic modes. It could also tell me when I could open the cover to remove and replace with new slides without waiting until the very end of the sequence. It would have been so easy for Epson to include simple use information as to what the reason and advantage of the other modes and dpi levels might bring. Most of us buy these products as novices and never get beyond that level!!!

Good Scanner, deficient software

We have had this scanner for several years, and recently changed to a new computer running Windows 8.1. As the software disc was for Windows Vista, I downloaded the newest drivers, etc. These worked after considerable trouble getting them to run the installation routine - like rolling back the system to Windows as received from the factory, not the latest updates. However, the downloads don't include the OCR software, so now that function does not work, depriving me of part of the reason I bought it.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Exactly What I expected.

I hated to get rid of my old Epson, but there seemed to be no drivers for it compatible with Windows 8. I knew what I wanted - all the old features plus Auto Document Feeding. I found that for just a few dollars more I could get that plus a wide array of USEFUL feature (not whiz-bang stuff you never use). This scanned does exactly what I need; it's easy, intuitive, and fast.

I've had this scanner for about 2 years and have scanned over a thousand photos with it, including slides and negatives. This scanner is fantastic. With it I can set the resolution, restore faded pictures, remove dust and scratches, and in short do anything I want with the photos. I can also scan printed documents and convert them into Word documents. This scanner is really top quality for the serious photographer.
I would recommend this to a friend!
