I bought this specifically to scan negatives and it works great. I scan them at the highest resolution and it takes 6 minutes tops to scan which is good time compared to other flat bed scanners I've used. The compact design is nice as well.
I would like to begin by saying that I am a new epson product consumer...I have recently purchased a epson pro printer and was totally amazed by what it can do...now we purchased this epson v500 scanner for our small jobs we wanted to finish around the house- and epson did it again- amazing quality...it is very quick to set up and get working...now we shall see if it will stand up to the test of time...but I would recommend it highly for anyone who would like to transfer their pictures to digital format...you have made a future customer out of me..thanks again epson!!!
Purchased this scanner with the main feature being that it could scan photos using the Automatic Document Feeder. This is not the case. The first (new) scanner that I received, it pulled the pictures through just fine but the digital image would have streaks through it. Had it replaced and the second scanner/ADF was worse. The jamming was ridiculous. Had it replaced for the third time and it was just as bad as the second one. Not to mention that the 2nd and 3rd products they sent were damaged. They looked USED. The scanner part is great, the ADF is not. I recommend the scanner without the ADF. P.S. I was told after the third replacement the ADF is not to be used for pictures due to the texture. :/
I like the V500. It is a second Epson scanner in my home. However, it took me all afternoon (and I am a computer instructor) to figure out how to make the slide and film option work. I looked at the "Help" items over and over (the "instructions" in the box are very weak). I finally figured out accidentally what I was missing in the process. Great product--NEEDS BETTER INSTRUCTIONS on the additional features.
Thus far, after one month of work, the machine is performing well. It took some time to manage the many options and I would have liked to see a .pdf of the operating manual able to be downloaded (It is available on line.) We purchased the machine to scan many 35MM slides stored for over 30 years. Thus far the quality of the scan is good. The one area I thought could have been better engineered was the removal of slides from the template which is inserted into the scan area. One has to press on one side of the slide and catch the other side with a finger nail to remove it. All of that was frustrating at first but practice made it easier. All in all it was a good purchase.
so far its been great. Easy to hook up and start. Easy to scan our photos and place in our system folders. i can recommend this equipment to anyone who doesn't like a lot of technical stuff to deal with. Easy to use.
It does a great job scanning but is a really slow process. The correction software adds a great deal of time to the process. A scanner needs to be invented which takes a whole slide reel and copies all of the slides in the reel and then deposits them back into the reel. The cropping is very confusing as it seems to have a mind of its own.
Great scanner at a great price. Does as good a job on slides as the more expensive ones. Would recommend it in a minute to anybody looking for a multifunction scanner.
