I had a choice - spend less money - hope for quality - continue to question myself. In the end I decided to select the V500. It was easy to install and my first scan went through PERFECTLY. The combination of the Epson V500 with the Epson 1400 Printer - WOW. I'm looking forward to the future with great optimism with what I want to do with this equipment.

Great for B&W

I only recently started using this scanner, but it is great for my needs. Specifically I shoot black and white film, develop it at home, and then run the negs through the Epson V500.
I have scanned both 35 mm and 120 medium format negs. The negative/slide holder works well. The scans start quickly at the touch of a single button, and produce very good results. The accompanying software is not self-explanatory, and I haven't yet read through all the options. I used VueScan, which lets you select a single frame in a negative strip using your mouse or touchpad. I have also scanned a couple of prints, and the results were sharp and quick.

Good scanner - restricted software

Both the scanner and the software worked right out of the box. The installation was very straight forward with no hitches encountered. But when I made my first scan, I was a little disappointed with the software which had a mind of its own.
My initial scan was a b/w negative which I particularly wanted to scan a certain way. Unfortunately the scanner software had it own idea of what I should do. I should point out that I was trying to scan a 4x5 negative which is beyond the scan frame but since I only wanted a cropped portion of it that would fit within the medium format negative holder, I thought that I could selectively position the negative to effect the crop. Unfortunately the scanner software would not allow anything larger than 2 x 3 inches even though I set the negative size to 6x9 cm. Then, giving up on that, I spent several hours trying to make adjustments to the gamma and such with the controls provided but was unable to change the settings to suit my needs. Eventually I gave up and went back to a very basic scan program that I was familiar with.
I would definitely recommend this scanner to anyone except an experienced user.
I would also like to suggest to Epson, that they should really incorporate an adjustable focus so that one can position the negatives directly on the glass with out the negative holder.

Epson V500 Office

Really a solid value insofar as it offers a document feeder as well as a flatbed scanning surface.
I've used it for hundreds of documents and found it to be fast and excellent quality.
There are other scanners that scan faster, and can scan doubled-sided, but they tend to be almost twice the price. The V500 Office is a good investment for finding that middle ground.

V500 Perfection

I spent some time with the professional settings, scanning and re-scanning to learn the intracasies of this scanner. WOW, very powerful. I even tried some old 110 negs in the medium format holder, clamping just one side of the neg. At 3200 dpi I got very good scans that produced a reasonable 5x7 print. BTW the 110 negs were in my deceased daughter's camera and were irreplaceable. That one scan paid for the scanner in my book. They had been devepoled but the pictures had beenlost, untill now! Thankyou!

I am very impressed with the V500. I purchased it to scan some old 2 x 3 inch positive film from the 50's & 60's I got from my mother. It is a bit slow scanning, but, the results are very good.
