I bought the scanner based on it's high resolution and past experience with Epson products. I got a package that had capabilities I could use to resolve some haunting issues, the converting of 35mm slides into a digital library, for one.
V500 provides templates to hold slides which snaps into the lid to capture it's arrangement. The lid provides needed back-lighting for the scan. The V500 also helped turn my PC into a fax machine, saving ocasional trips and gas. I do not know if Epson's software also supports the fax function.
V500's driver DVD supports both Windows and Mac's OS X, plus a considerable list of supporting software, even an OCR application. Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 is provided on 2 additional DVDs, for Windows and MAC systems. I have not had time to give a software evaluation, other than the basic driver.
I received my scanner quickly and it looked brand new, even though it has been refurbished. I love it. It scans fast and does all the cropping and fixing for you. I've just started scanning slides as well and although it's a little more time consuming, it's a great option to have!!!
I had an Epson Scanner (3170) for years and it finally gave up the ghost. I made the mistake of purchasing a replacement from another manufacturer. I was up til 2AM and never got a decent scan. Returned it and bought the V500. Brought it home-plugged it in and "Bingo!-worked just as dependably as my previous one. I bought the ADF-same story-plugged it in and worked instantly. Good job!
After working out a few minor problems that could have been prevented with a better written manual I got superb results scanning 2 1/4 and 35 mm negatives. This is a very good scanner at a very reasonable price.
Great scanner. Needed a good scanner to bring all my old 35mm film onto the computer. This scanner is real good, but when scanning black & white film don't use the ICE feature. It will mess up the photos. Once I figures that out the scanning went very well.
It's an okay run of the mill scanner that works okay with Read Iris 11 and Abby fine Reader Sprint. In order to scan in to Photo Shop CS 5 you have to open Photo Shop in 32 bit mode. (Highlight Photo Shop, go to File -Get Info and check "Open in 32 bit mode. Since we don't scan slides, the cover is way too heavy. We have never gotten the buttons to work reliably with our imac and snow leopard.
I received an Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner from my wife for Father's Day and once I got a chance to set it up and use it I was fully impressed. It is not only faster then a budget brand film scanner I own it does a much better job. I have scanned slides, color negatives and black and white negatives. 35mm as well as some OLD 127 b/w negs. It handled all of these beautifully. I would in fact recommend this and any other Epson product to my friends. I use it in conjuction with TWO Epson Photo Stylus 1400 wide format printers. The printers are fantastic as well.
