Excellent product, I am scanning old photos (thousnads)into computer files and then burning to disc for prevervation and viewing purposes. The scanner is just awesome, it is fast and the quality of the scans are the best. So very easy to get started---unpack scanner, plug in, and install the software. No problems, I highly recommend this product to anyone who has a scanning project.

The setup was so simple and easy. I am scanning all of my old slides and I am very impressed with the end results. Some were faded and correcting it is so simple. This is a very good buy!. I also purchased the V600 for my son who is majoring in photography.

V500 Scanner

Very easy to use and was happy with the results. One problem is this scanner will not work for why I bought it. I have some old negatives from when my father was a boy I wanted to scan. They are an odd size about 2.25 inches wide by 4.25 inches long. First I thougt it would work because there is a tray for it to fit into. One problem, it produces three scans - the top, middle, and bottom - of the negative. I can cut and past them together but the histogram creates three different brightness and contrasts. A lot of extra work!

Awesome Machine

Don't worry. Be happy. Just buy one. It's phenomenal.
The only negative I saw in the multitude of reviews read before purchasing was that it can be slow when using digital ice. It is. And, given the fantastic results, it should be. If you are scanning precious memories to preserve, be patient. Good things take time. And Epson has made it possible, at an extremely low price, with Digital Ice, to make Grandma look like a princess. Things come off the old print or slide that you couldn't see before. It's amazing. And, I'm only using the "Home" level, second up of 4 available.
Four of my Dad's 50 year old slides scanned at 300 dpi no compression jpeg for 8X10 print target take only about 2 minutes each with ice and color correction. And, again, the end product is awesome clear.
The results are beautiful for preservation without even incorporating Adobe Photoshop. By the way, I would recommend getting the latest Photoshop Elements 9.0 and trashing the 6.0 disk included. The machine works well with 9.0.
So, go for it. At this price, you will have paid a pittance to be a genius.

I have owned other Epson products and had no problems with them, therefore I was interested only in Epson when shopping for a scanner. It was very easy to set up and use. I am scanning all of my old slides(some are 20 years old or more) and they came out good. I am still learning how to correct the fading, etc. but so far it has been great! I also purchased the V600 for my son who is majoring in professional photography. The college he attends also uses Epson scanners and that is what he wanted after using theirs. Whether you are really into photography or just organizing your personal photos like myself, this is the perfect scanner! And the price cannot be beat!

Great product. Quick and easy to use. A little noisy but not too bad. Great photo scans and slides or negatives.

The most horrible install I have experienced.

I understand this equipment was manufactured some time ago and things change, like software, etc. Manufatureres should put a link in the instructions to contact them online and install the most up to date software. For example I have a Vista Machine and the included abby fine reader is not supported. Epson could set up a web site with the current install for this item. They would not need to put CD's in the package and the customer can get current install.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
