Very Good Buy But,

This is my second Epson scanner and it works great with the supplied ICE software.
However, I had to resurrect an old PC laptop because Epson does not have updated software for
Mac Lion operating system. You can get it to work on a IMac but you do not have any of the software flexibility offered by ICE such as color restoration, spot removal, scratch removal, etc.

Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner

The real beauty in the product is that the scanning software allows one to choose from lots of settings for any scanning job. Choose from Photo or Document; choose dpi settings; run a preview, select or box off individual items, like each separate photo on a page. Choose ALL. Give the files a name in one box then a number in a second box. Scan. All items go into the computer with the same name but different chronically ordered numbers via one scanning pass. This is the best scanning system ever. It works great for scanning pages of album pictures where one wants to end up with individual pictures or if one wants to scan a person on a picture as one file then the entire picture as a second file. I never read a review about this product, but somehow ended up with this product and so I want to contribute enough info so that one knows what the product is capable of. It is totally awesome.

Epson Perfection V500 Office Scanner

I had the old Epson 3200SU Photo Scanner with an additional document feeder. Was looking to replace this with another scanner that was as good. Needed to upgrade because scanner did not have a driver for the newer Windows (Vista, 7 and 8). This is the best scanner - does slides, negatives, transparencies, photos, and documents. The automatic document feeder is reliable so you don't have to watch for a feeding error. The Epson V500 scans more negatives and slides than the older version. This is one of the few scanners you can buy, in this price range, that has the CCD rather than the CIS scanning element. This gives a better scan. If I were to give a negative, it would be it is a little slower than other scanners with an automatic document feeder.

Wonderful scanner

I have been very pleased with the Epson photo scanner. When I bought it, I was a bit skeptical about how well it would work, but it does as well as the salesman stated. My 90 year old mother moved from her house, and I made a project of scanning all of her photos for a family photo disc. This scanner is very easy to use. Occasionally, I need to turn the auto-correction off to get a colorful background to copy correctly, but otherwise it really does restore color to faded color photos that seem impossible to salvage. Thank you!!

Simple and Effective

While it was not my first scanner, it was my first photo scanner and I have used it to scan photos and 35mm slides. Operation is straightforward and the controls seem adequate for my level of utility. The user can select from slides, negatives, prints, illustrations, artwork, etc. as a medium to be scanned.
The preview function, particularly with slides, allows you to rotate the image or remove/reverse the slide position before scanning which I found to be of use. It scans 4 slides at a time and with the ICE technology active, takes 2-3 minutes for the 4 slides at 300 DPI. Scan resolution is user selectable and scan time is dependent upon selected resolution. My scanner came with a free copy of Photoshop Elements (for both PC and Mac) and this was not an advertised feature and IMHO, should be.
Overall, I am quite pleased with the performance and operation of this scanner and would recommend it to anyone seeking to convert old slides/photos to digital images. Might not be the choice of the pros for whatever reason, but for the "ordinary guy" this scanner does well.

Great Picture Scanner

Bought this to scan in a bunch of old photos from my parents. Worked like a champ. I especially liked that you could put multiple smaller pictures on at once and it picked up each one separately. This feature makes the task go a lot faster. The program was easy to use even for someone as unskilled as me.

Correction to my earlier review
on April 21, 2014

I am upgrading my rating from 3 to 4 stars. After contacting customer support and some further trial and error, I have figured it out, and scanning slides works. However, the manual and help menu should have been clearer to begin with.
In the professional mode choose the document type as FILM, the film type as POSITIVE FILM, (if you are doing slides), and set the image type and resolution of your choice. The document size will default to 2.7 x 9.33, do not worry about that.
Go ahead and click the preview button. After the preview is scanned, the preview window will open. This may be tucked at the bottom of the monitor area, and may need to be dragged to viewing position and opened. Now move the cursor and drag it to Mark the area of each slide as you want it to be scanned. When finished, click the button marked All to select all the marked slides, then go back to the main window and click Scan.

I have used this scanner to scan colored negatives, colored slides and black and white negatives. What I am very impressed with is the ability to scan the larger black and white negatives from the 40's ... I have had very good luck with this scanner and would recommend it to anyone for scanning negatives or photos. Great machine!!!! Thanks Epson.
