Quality Scans

I have used this scanner to scan colored negatives, colored slides and black and white negatives. What I am very impressed with is the ability to scan the larger black and white negatives from the 40's ... I have had very good luck with this scanner and would recommend it to anyone for scanning negatives or photos. Great machine!!!! Thanks Epson.

We now own three of these scanners--one with the feeder tray. They were all easy to set up and give terrific results. Hooray for Epson! And the price is very reasonable.

Correction to my earlier review

I am upgrading my rating from 3 to 4 stars. After contacting customer support and some further trial and error, I have figured it out, and scanning slides works. However, the manual and help menu should have been clearer to begin with.
In the professional mode choose the document type as FILM, the film type as POSITIVE FILM, (if you are doing slides), and set the image type and resolution of your choice. The document size will default to 2.7 x 9.33, do not worry about that.
Go ahead and click the preview button. After the preview is scanned, the preview window will open. This may be tucked at the bottom of the monitor area, and may need to be dragged to viewing position and opened. Now move the cursor and drag it to Mark the area of each slide as you want it to be scanned. When finished, click the button marked All to select all the marked slides, then go back to the main window and click Scan.

excellent for documants, iffy for slides

I had bought it to replace my older Epson scanner that died of old age. Gave me excellent use for reflective scanning, enabling me to restore yellowed photos and book pages.
I recently tried it for archiving slides. It gives excellent results with a single slide in auto mode. HOWEVER, when I place 4 slides in the holder, one of them gets scanned well, the other three are clipped by a third. I have been unable to get a preview in order to manually define the area for scanning, though I tried the professional mode and other modes, and have consulted the manual to no avail.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

long lasting service

As a now retired photographer and present photo hobbyist, I have been ever so pleased with the lasting quality of this Epson V500.
Purchased back in November of 2008, this scanner has been used constantly to copy my photos and special projects. Never has it's service been less than satisfying my demands. I have reported this to many people and they have been using Epson products with equal satisfaction.

A Very Reliable Workhorse
on March 23, 2014

I run a digital archiving and photo restoration business, so any equipment I use has to work right every time, all the time. The Epson Perfection V500 worked perfectly right out of the box, it was so reliable that after six months of 6400 dpi slide scanning, it was still working like new! It was so reliable that I bought a second one just for printed photos! It's now almost three years later, and both scanners have been reliable workhorses. One or the other is in constant use 8 hours a day, six days a week. The only maintenance I've had to do one either of them has been to clean the glass.
If I had one criticism, it would be that the carriers for 35 mm film are a bit on the flimsy side. I'd like to see something a tad bit beefier. On the other hand, it scans 120 size film, so I can't really complain. It's a great scanner I'd recommend to anyone.
